Thought i'd open up the thread to get discussing ins and outs for this weeks clash against the Suns.
Jack Steven might be rested based on the following:

Richardson said Steven may need to step away from the game in an attempt to get himself right.

“He’s a workhorse and he needs to work. He’s in that situation now where we’ve got to sit down and have a chat about where he’s at,” Richardson said.

“If we can get some more work into him then we’ll keep going, (but) if we think not, then perhaps he needs to have a break, but we’ll assess that this week.

“He can do a bit (of training), but he’s not quite doing what he needs to do. When you’ve had a considerable lay-off you’ve almost got to have a mini pre-season to get back to the level.

“He’s doing what most of the other guys are doing, but he hasn’t been able to do that bit extra to get himself into really good midfield running shape.”

Also anyone think Tommy Lee might get a call up based on this? >

Richardson confessed his side had become too Riewoldt-conscious.

“It was almost ‘Rooey’ or nothing ahead of the footy tonight, which is a bit of a worry for us,” he said.

“We thought (Jack) Billings showed a bit again tonight ... (Adam) Schneider was good, but other than that we just need a few more ahead of the footy to give the big fella a hand at times.

Jack's toe still isn't right. It's such a little bone in his toe I think it was that it can only be fixed by rest. He can play through it but still feels it which impacts his running. Needs to rest it in order to get it right. Either they rest it now for a while and play 2nd half of the year or he plays through it to the end of the season and then rests it Sep/Oct and be right for the pre season.....

Such a shame cos after last season he got himself so fit and was killing it on the track in pre season and then this happened and nhe had to rest it for 8 weeks in pre season

Jack cant train properly during the week because he pulls up sore after the game. he is fit enough to play but he cant get fit enough to play well during the whole game. he is the type of player who needs to be fit off the ground to get the best out of himslf. I would think they will rest him this week so that he can get a block of 2 weeks training into him due to the bye the following week. It is probably the best thing for him and the club. And before people have a go at the fitness guys I can assure you jack was fit enough to play the first week he did. Like many injuries of that type though its hard to train after the games. Some players dont need full training after a game but it seems for jack to be at his best, he does.

And on Lee, he doesnt deserve a game but it may get down to not many other options because im unsure Siposs is the answer either. the problem with both of those players is they dont work hard enough during a game. maybe they just cant.

For the love of god rest him. We aren't exactly pushing for finals here. Weller can play a full game and I'd go with a structural change and bring in Lee to replace him and give us another forward option. Either that or bring in Saunders to be the sub.

Yeah he's not right.

I hope we don't make too many changes this week, I'd like to see a settled side for once. I want to see Lee come in but I'd probably prefer he come in after a big week in the two's. Sippos didn't have a great game but if he had kicked 2 of the 3 gettable shots he had, we'd probably be giving him a pass mark. He deserves a good month in to see what he can do. Milera deserves a game and we could probably use his run and carry as well and he's a known goal kicker.

In: Milera
Out: Steven

The week after is the bye, so it may provide Steven with a fortnight of rest.

If you drop Siposs this week, then the line is through his name. Keep him in if you think he can come good at any time.

Bruce didn't do a lot, but GC have a tall forward line. And perhaps we need to see if Riewoldt will come up.

Out: Steven and Riewoldt
In: Lee and Dunell

We are waaay to comfortable just bombing to Roo every chance. That stab pass from Lenny was one of the worst forward options I've ever seen and it happened because he didn't honor the first lead from Siposs.

Let's get really mobile up forward with multiple mid sized options.

Get Roo out for a game and challenge the team to find other options. Lower the eyes. Hold the ball and let the forwards create and work into space.

We will lose v GC with Roo in. May as well see what the teams mindset is going forward without him.

Heard Richo talking to, 3AW I think, about Roberton on the weekend and how he is struggling to adjust with his injury. Is he a chance to come in? Had such a good year last year so seems odd that he is out in the cold so to speak.

My thoughts for this game:
God help us if we play as poorly against Gold Coast as we did against Carlton in the first half. We need to bring four quarters of effort and intensity, improve our disposal and stop kicking to Riewoldt at every opportunity. Also, if Steven isn't right, give him a rest, we may as well get games into the kids. I would be happy enough with a solid effort and a five goal or less loss.

Delaney > Day / Dixon
Bruce > Lynch

Play Dunstan against Prestia head to head. Acres and Billings to rotate on and off Ablett. It's worth them trying to learn the running patterns and so on of these two guns. Especially Billings learning off Ablett, given I expect Billings to become a goal kicking midfielder down the line.

Chuck Curren on Swallow as well.

The learning aspect should be a focus, I'd almost play our kids from now on, on the opposition guns, just for them to learn and see where/how players like Selwood, Pendles etc dominate.

just my 2 cents

delaney has been great this year, i agree with everyone in this post.

bruce cant be dropped from now on, they are our 2 mainstays in defense for the next 5-6 years, in fact wouldnt mind giving bruce a go in the forward line every now and then

During his days in Canberra, especially Eastlake, he did drift to the forward line on occasion and did fairly well. He's mainly a defender, but yeah, he can kick a goal or two. He's got the size, mobility, and marking power to be a decent option. Not sure how his kicking has held up though.

Don't know about his goalkicking but his field kicking has been questionable at times.

I was sitting on the wing in the carlton game. Bruce had the ball in front of me and he wanted to kick it long to mav so he could run into space. mav led towards him instead and he pulled the kick then it got spoiled out of bounds. I think the team also just needs a bit of time to build some chemistry swell.

And our injury list extends to 8 players....

David Armitage (Leg) - 2 weeks
Sam Fisher (Hamstring) - 4-6 weeks
Tom Hickey (Foot) - 6 weeks
Sam Gilbert (Foot) - 8 weeks
Nathan Wright (Leg) - 9 weeks
Eli Templeton (Arm) - 3-4 months
Jarryn Geary (Arm) - 3-4 months
Trent Dennis-Lane (Ankle) - 2-4 weeks

You'd think 6 or even 7 of those would probably be in our best 22. Not that I'm that fussed, it's giving the kids a go which is exciting.

All of them were best 22 besides TDL before they got injured, handy list.. But yeah i'm not fussed it's pumping the games into the other guys.

In: Dunell, Milera
OUT: Steven, Gwilt

Risky changes here but hey I doubt we're winning. Roberton unlucky, want him in over Gwilt and Shenton every day of the week but Shenton deserves another crack (was solid in fairness). Back six of Delaney, Bruce, Dempster, Webster, Shenton, Newnes seems to spell trouble without Gwilt. I guess Gwilt is very important, and when we get thumped by 100 that will show, but give him an extended rest so we can see Shenton again. When the going gets tough chuck him back in if we need.

One of the ins as sub, preferably Milera but I don't want to mess around with him as sub too much. Probably have enough forwards. Think Lee, Stanley, Riewoldt, Siposs is too much if only one of them gets the ball kicked to him. Stanley needs to get on his bike, and Sip needs a bit of confidence. Backing them in.
