I see the fact that Cos Cardone was the person who leaked the 1990 bid to the media (or reported on it, not sure which) quite a bit around here. As someone who wasn’t even an idea when that happened, does anyone have a source on that by chance? I suspect it’s something that you had to be around to know because the name of the journo involved probably isn’t going to be recorded, but I’d like something to cite when I mention that on Tiktok. I get the sense that if something like that was readily available, it’d be a lot easier for people to vocally reject him as the next president, as opposed to me sounding like I’m going schizo when I mention it.

I can’t find all my books related to it atm, but Mike Sheahan — who is credited with breaking the story in Melbourne — mentions Cos (who worked for ‘The News’ at the time) claiming partial credit on the ‘Divided’ podcast circa 2020. Auto transcript:

Beyond that, I remember reading/hearing someone prominent (I’m 99% sure was Greg Boulton in either one of the books or docos) specifically noting that Cos — a Port man — uncovered a secret meeting they had with Alan Schwab and they knew then it was only a matter of time before the cat was out of the bag.

Not the most compelling evidence to run with directly atm, but I’ll have a hunt around and try and find more.

Wasn’t the story that Cos ‘discovered’ the meeting because he saw them together at a restaurant on Waymouth St?

That rings a bell, yeah. I thought it was in Abernethy’s book (From Port To A Power), but it isn’t. Annoying.

I've heard Cos and Greg Boulton talk about Cos stalking Greg in a parking lot when there was a meeting in Adelaide, but that was only after Mike Sheahan broke the story in the Sunday Age on 29th July 1990.

Pretty sure if you dig up The Inside Story doco that the club put out after 2004 flag that Cos's stalking gets a mention and footage of Greg in a car park.

Screen Shot from the doco that came with the 2004 premiership DVD package and this bit was shown in the video that inducted the 1990 board into the Port Hall of Fame in 2023.

Mike Sheahan broke the story for Sunday Age on 29 July 1990, but the Heads of Agreement hadn't been signed between Port and the AFL. This needed to be signed before Port could go to the SANFL and tell them what they were doing and work out the next step.

Mike Sheahan happened to be at AFL house less than 2 weeks before he wrote the story and saw Weber and former GM Ian Mckenzie waiting to meet Oakley and Schwab. He then dug around and went with the story for the 29th July edition.

Either the next day or on Tuesday Port officials met at their lawyers and the Heads of Agreement was worked on with the AFL and drafts being sent back and forth on fax. This is back page of The News in 1990 either Tuesday 31st July or Wednesday 1st August.

I remember the 'Oh yes, it's on!' headline as if it was yesterday (I was just a teenager at the time). Almost like where were you when Kennedy got shot moment.

Amazing to think a town the size of Adelaide had two different newspapers back in the day.

Anything happening on that front? Heard via friends some info from a player.

I've been burned way too much to open my mouth and say anything I'm told on that front.

He's going to be the coach in 2025. The odds of him coaching 2026 are remote. But I liken him to a cockroach so until those odds are ZERO, I'm not putting anything past him.

What I will say is that a good club would have Hinkley's future well and truly sorted before the Christmas break. This is not a case of the Friday arvo news dump heading into the festive period, but rather it is to show a united definitive sign of strength, so everyone can move forward with the utmost of certainty and purpose when they return to truly hit the ground running early next calendar year.

Forgot to post this last week. The chance of getting rid of Koch as he was keen to replace Goyder as chairman of the AFL, is over. There has been a lot of talk that Goyder would stand down from the role as he flagged that he would stand down as Chair of Qantas in February before the October/November AGM and that he would do the same as chair of the AFL Commission. Goyder officially left the Qantas board in September.

I thought he would do the same and give up his role at the AFL on or before the AGM in March 2025. He now wants to stay 3 more years.

AFL Commission chair Richard Goyder has revealed he plans to remain as football’s head for three more years. Goyder surprised senior AFL people when he revealed his intent to remain in the job until 2028 at a meeting late in the season, according to two sources with knowledge of the meeting who spoke on condition of anonymity.

It is unknown if Goyder received the feedback from the club heads before making the comment about staying on for three more years. Certainly, if there was a view from presidents that he should continue in the job, it was far from unanimous. AFL club bosses had expected that Goyder – who replaced Mike Fitzpatrick as commission chairman in 2017 – would remain until the next annual general meeting in March next year, but he was expected to announce a timeframe for his departure ahead of the end of his latest three-year term, which expires in March 2026.
