I see the fact that Cos Cardone was the person who leaked the 1990 bid to the media (or reported on it, not sure which) quite a bit around here. As someone who wasn’t even an idea when that happened, does anyone have a source on that by chance? I suspect it’s something that you had to be around to know because the name of the journo involved probably isn’t going to be recorded, but I’d like something to cite when I mention that on Tiktok. I get the sense that if something like that was readily available, it’d be a lot easier for people to vocally reject him as the next president, as opposed to me sounding like I’m going schizo when I mention it.

I can’t find all my books related to it atm, but Mike Sheahan — who is credited with breaking the story in Melbourne — mentions Cos (who worked for ‘The News’ at the time) claiming partial credit on the ‘Divided’ podcast circa 2020. Auto transcript:

Beyond that, I remember reading/hearing someone prominent (I’m 99% sure was Greg Boulton in either one of the books or docos) specifically noting that Cos — a Port man — uncovered a secret meeting they had with Alan Schwab and they knew then it was only a matter of time before the cat was out of the bag.

Not the most compelling evidence to run with directly atm, but I’ll have a hunt around and try and find more.

Wasn’t the story that Cos ‘discovered’ the meeting because he saw them together at a restaurant on Waymouth St?

That rings a bell, yeah. I thought it was in Abernethy’s book (From Port To A Power), but it isn’t. Annoying.
