Max King, Cooper Sharman, Liam Henry, Mattaes Phillipou, 2x top 10 picks, and more to return to this St Kilda side

Early days of 2025 we are seeing rapid improvement in the depth of this squad as competition improves

I had already given up on this season with the way we played last week. But this performance has completely flipped the switch - we are genuinely on the rise...and fast

Crazy what a bit of effort can do for a side
Consistency is what we need most. Proven we can mix it with the better teams, since the back half of last year.
Also proven how bad we can be when not switched on.
Our good, is very good.
Our bad, is still very bad.

it's the same as any team in the league...freo case and point with last week. if you're 5% off your game, you will get slaughtered

Watched Hunter closely last night. It's amazing how often he had an impact on a clearance even though he doesn't get the actual stat.
He does a lot of 1% stuff that gets missed in the wash up. A hand on the ball of an opposition player that slows their possession a fraction, a small bump that spills the ball. He manages to get in between the ball and opposition player a lot which gives time to our mids.
I understand the frustration with him with some on here, but I wasn't the least surprised he got a contract extension.

Chris Scott said similar in his presser. There's so little between the teams now, that there's barely any wriggle room.
This round shows just how close it all is.
Depth, fitness, and experience have never been more valuable.

Going to be a season where you can't bank any games. You are going to have to win them against any side. 2 of the bottom 5 sides are preseason premiership fancies. The bottom side was unlucky not to knock off the premier. North just knocked off a recent premier side by 10 goals even.

It's going to be an interesting season and whoever wins the flag isn't going to get it off the back of a bunch of easy wins.

He's frustrating because he plods around like a ruckman, he's about as fashionable as Bill Cosby but he's just a different type of player. He does weird stuff that makes him unpredictable. He kicks at oblique angles, he goes low when others go high, he sees stuff out of his peripheral vision. It doesn't look like he's ever going to be a star but he can contribute in ways no-one else can.

That's it.
He's unique.
Just like us hey!? 😎

I think the game and everyone around him are too fast for him to be a star but things happen with the ball in his hands and you need as many of those kinds of players as possible.

He does do some good stuff. He also does a lot of very ordinary stuff. Often he does both in the same play. In one instance on Saturday night he gathered the ball at the centre bounce, did a beautiful little Clark shimmy to get into clear space running forward, went for handball over the top to player in clear, poor handball, easily intercepted and Geelong moved quickly to get a goal at other end.

I'm on the fence. I wish he was better, a 25 touch guy at 70% efficiency but right now he is probably in our best 6 in the middle.

Bit harsh on that handball. It was a good read and looked high enough on live & on rewatch, but was a great read and defensive play by Humphries.

Had no idea their formline was that bad. Hilarious!
Even tipped by some "experts" to win the premiership this year.
Most have them in the top 4 from memory.
I love a good conspiracy theory...I think they're a bit of fun and makes the world a more interesting place...but this!?
It's all a bit too peculiar and weird when you look at it with the human tools of logic, reason & objectivity.

Humphries is another one of those ****ed Geelong stories where they find a star player in the bin. I think he was the last player taken in the 2023 draft. Looks elite. Kicks as good as Nas and has incredible vision.

What looked like genius list management moving up to get Jagga Smith, meant they cut hard at their fat and topped off with injuries to their stars and they look very average.

I think they were hoping Moir and Motlop would step up but they lost both Owies and Kennedey who were a fair chunk of their scoring last year.

Owies in particular was a surprise. It seemed counter productive. He was one I thought we might look at, but glad we didn't. Better to stick with the mix of experience and kids we have. I know there's probably a small forward hole that could be filled, but I reckon what we have will come good. Just hope it's sooner rather than later.
Kennedy a solid citizen which all clubs need.
I don't want to dwell on the baggers too much, but It's fun watching them trip and stumble 😆

I reckon we need a bit from Hill after two games- seems to be missing for chunks of a game. Other than that, it would be great to see another debutant in the next game..need to blood all these guys.
Game v Adelaide he was invisible. Geelong tagged him so his possessions were down, so he contributed in other ways, very unHill like 1% even taking a good contested mark.
Yeah need a bit more out of him but liked that he still contributed and did team things.

Owens was doing more than his share of heavy lifting forward and I dont think we could afford to move him. Keeler got a lesson when rucking but that wont do him any harm, sometimes its more about the learning process as it is about the contests.
It will do Keeler more good than harm as it will have shown him the difference between VFL and AFL and I'm not just talking doing the rucking , the amount of running required ect.
I think if they can they need to persist with him as i think playing at Sandy is not going to help him develop

his tackle in the first was sublime...no holding the ball though even as he latched onto him for an eternity

Same, watched him closely. He was often on the bottom of a pack and despite being one of the smaller players he was burrowing away sometimes getting two or three touches to our advantage.

Honestly that’s very unlike him. I’d argue he’s usually our best hand baller out of stoppages. Well second now after McRae.

Ultimately re Clark. It’s very very simple. He usually takes 3/4 games after an injury to hit his straps. If he ever gets a clean run, then I think we’ll see his best.
