Saints - window officially shut

I think Monday night's game is a big one for the Saints. If they get flogged I reckon the window is officially shut. Just gut feel.

And if they win, which will happen now, officially in the 8, and there to stay!!Very impressive win. Blues look sus against real pressure. Saints look very exciting tonight, easy and high scoring, and not reliant on Kosi/Roo.

Who knows where we will finish but at least I think Watters message is getting through. That was a great unexpected win.

There wouldn't be many teams put their hand up to play them in the first week if they do make finals this year.

I read through this thread and realised I don't know what I'm talking about. We weren't mentally soft at all. Physically perhaps on grand final day 2010 but I think that was just physically exhausted after the duel the previous week.

The first quarter of the grand final showed the difference between them. Collingwood took their chances and st Kilda blew theirs.

I actually haven't watched any of the second grand final since 2010. I couldn't. And on the day I had my blinkers on. I thought it was our day. It was dry. It was sunny. I thought our big forwards would kick a bag. Nope, I was wrong.

At the time, I thought the Maxwell smother was a goal. It would have cut the margin to eleven points. Instead it set the tone for the day. From that point, we never stood a chance.

To say that that match was a mentally soft performance is disrespectful to Collingwood. To say that it's the only way Collingwood would win a flag was even more disrespectful. Last year, as much as it pained me, I had all but declared Collingwood the premiers.

I didnt actually want to turn this into another st Kilda versus Collingwood debate. I think I may have just read that post I replied to with my blinkers on. I intended to take a pot shot at Collingwood but now looking back, finally actually watching that game I realise a) st Kilda can't possibly be declared mentally soft and b) Collingwood won the premiership because they played better in the day.

I often talk about st Kilda fans who have been spoilt with seeing them win more than they have lost.

Well I I am one of those fans. I started supporting properly in 94, so witnessed a few average years, two decent ones, then a few more ordinary ones, amongst one truly awful one before the 2003-2012 period which has seen us win more games than lose every year since.

I never went through the eighties or any of that getting flogged by twenty goals every week. I have witnessed two lLosses by over a hundred points. The passionate loyal fans like plugger, ricmel and SainterK all saw about ten in that terrible decade for us.

Anyway, at the end of the day, I don't give a shit if some people think I'm a troll or a pathetic attention seeker. I love this club just as much as anyone.

Our window? Who knows? Tonight's result shows that we still can trouble the good sides and still can have our good days (or nights). Our pressure and intensity tonight was fantastic. Id like to think we still have more of that left.

Everything in bold is you talking about yourself.

The answer to your question is (b)....pathetic attention seeker.

Great yes, unexpected, NO. Many picked Saints, I always do when they have the list available that was there tonight. Pressure tackling, great pressure footy, and exciting scoring. Contenders v pretenders???

Watters 2012 may well be C Scott 2011.

Talking about yourself is verbalising how you feel inside - a written recall of an intellectual internal debate.

Attention seeking whoring is coming into a thread and trashing other people for some lame attempt at recogintion. I'm looking at you Timmy - I see that you are magnificant in the bent over position, you whore.

I think our window is still open from the evidence of the match against the blues. Especially this year seeing as you could pick the premiers out of a hat at the moment.
But the problem is (and always has been) that any injuries to stars will greatly effect us, more so than many other teams.
However big boy mcevoy our only pure ruckman will be a very very handy inclusion. Not to mention our best 2 defenders in gwilt and fisher. (Raph Clarke and schnieder depending on your views of them in our best 22)

Watters putting his imprint on the list and gameplan.

He has been big on 'balance' since he arrived, you must defend, but also hurt the opposition the other way.

Happy with what I said in this thread, I still like where we are going.

The thing that I was so happy about tonight was the pressuring you mentioned and the ferocious attack on the ball, or whoever had the ball for Carlton.

That is how we were playing when we were at our best in 2009/2010 and when we play like that we pretty much don't lose.

We have a much more balanced and dangerous forward line now though, plus some extra pace and "X-factor" and once we add Fisher and Gwilt and maybe Raph Clarke (who could be a lot better suited to Watters game style than he was to Ross') to our backline, then we could be just as hard to beat as we were then.

It's a big "if", but tonight was a really good start and if we get on a roll, this group still know how to win (including big games) which is half the battle.

I think they found the crow bar.
No, we just found another window. When one closes...

The OP and a few other posters writing off St Kilda looking pretty silly right now.

We played some great football tonight to knock off the premiership favourites and finally got some decent treatment from the umpires (apart from that goose McBurney and the ridiculous HTB against Milera in the 3rd quarter).

Watters has got us playing fast attacking footy again and utilising our talented forward line. With Riewoldt, Kosi, Stanley, Wilkes, Milne, Milera and Saad we have one of the most dangerous forward lines in the comp, throw in Schneider as well when he gets fit and we will be even more dangerous.

watched the game closely and am convinced Saints have absolutely no chance whatsoever to win the flag this year or won't come close for another 5 years at least.

Don't hate as it's just an opinion but Carlton are heavily overrated just like Essendon and Hawthorn.
Geelong are clearly not playing the type of footy that warrants a premiership assault albeit I'm pretty confident we see them go on an unbeaten winning streak starting against Collingwood on friday night.

St Kilda struggle to contain tall forward lines, forget about Waite & Hampsen...they are B graders at best, they failed to show tonight as it was left to the small brigade but St Kilda aren't getting any younger, infact..they are the oldest list in the comp and the slow decline of Montagna, Riewoldt, Blake, Jones & Kosi just to name a few are not going to be producing the type of footy they were in 2009.
Stanley is a very talented kid but unless his improvement is drastic once September begins, I can't see Riewoldt or Kosi kicking 6 goals between them which will be needed to topple whoever they face. I'm still not convinced they even make finals as next week will be a big challenge against West Coast and I am fairly confident they get overrun quite comfortably as Naitanui, Cox, Shuey, Lynch and Hill will run rings around the slower backline of the Saints.

Top win tonight but don't get carried away as Carlton have been in a mini-form slump the previous 3 weeks and they were due for a loss just like the Swans currently are and those other teams many rated when they were undefeated.
The marathon is only starting to heat up and just watch how many games Essendon lose in the next 6 weeks ;)

A lot to like bout the Saints at the moment, and by saying all those names your forward line is looking to actually have some depth, Wilkes being another tall option is going to do wonders for you guys. Looking very potent, at the moment your defence is your only question mark. Who are your tall defenders back there while Fisher isn't there and Spud Dawson being shown the door? They did well tonight covering the mutliple Carlton talls.

Proof yet again that you're a complete moron or a troll.

sorry buddy, your list was far greater 5 years ago and you didn't see a premiership so why do you believe they do it in 2012?

Have you forgotten that Port Adelaide defeated you in round 1?
Premiership contenders do not lose to either one of Melbourne, GWS, Suns or Port Power.
