Young Bulldog Sam Reid was looking forward to his best pre-season yet. Then he discovered he had a life-changing illness, type 1 diabetes, writes Emma Quayle.

This kid will be a machine.
Events like this can make or break a person, and by the sounds of the article, his determination levels have shot up dramatically (he seemed a pretty focused kid anyway).
Discovering you have a major health issue that will affect you for the rest of your life can be a big blow, I was diagnosed with epilepsy at 28yo after a couple of fits, but what do you do? Do you mope around feeling sorry for yourself and letting go of your dreams/aspirations and probably become more ill in the process? Or do you start to appreciate the fragility and brevity of life, grab hold of your chances and work toward your goals with fierce determination. The latter I think.
Enjoy the life you have while you have it; you never want to be old saying 'what if?' or 'if only'. (I've had enough of saying that after a few of our prelims....)
Live your life like it's a Pepsi Max commercial....
NO RETREAT, NO SURRENDER!!!....
Alright I'm getting carried away now.

All the best to Sam.

lol, I enjoyed reading your post Sgt Slaughter. Good luck with the epilepsy.

Thanks for posting TCD, I ran over my paper this morning, shredded it.

Can Sam Reid push into the doggies midfield? If so, at whose expense? Picken?

If someone like Cross or Picken go down through injury then I'd say he'd be the forerunner to replace him.

Could someone please copy and post the article on here, everytime I open a link on the Age website it comes up with an error and shuts my iNet down.

I think Fantasia should use his Norwood and Crows contacts to ask Nathan Bassett to have a chat with him. Bass played his AFL career as a Type 1 Diabetic and may have some tips for the heat of battle that Medical staff do not know. Also a person I work with is a type 1 diabetic and completed the Hawaiian Iron man, he said it made him mentally stronger to not allow the disease to beat him.

As somebody that has to endure regular injections, I get quite a good chuckle every time I see (or think about) that tattoo, its sure beats the shit out of all the meaningless, faux tribal tattoos that every second player sports nowadays.

Great read, thanks TCD for posting. All the best to Sam with this, sounds like he will make every post a winner, seems very driven.

just on another note that both Sam and the club can use this. When i was at school we had a week where Doggie players came out, breakfast with the Dogs or something, they still do it, and i think Sam going to the Schools and telling his Story would benifit the kids so much.

Cheers a_c, it certainly seems like something that can be managed through a successful AFL career

Reid will be fine.

I have a mate who manages type one diabetes. Apart from the injections, and needing the toilet more than others(bastard pissed on my couch when he was drunk on new years) he lives a normal life, and is faaaaar fitter than me. He went on a 200km ride the other day, handled it with ease(I handled it poorly, vomited, gave up and then went home). A professional athlete should be able to handle it fine. It may give him more discipline(imagine the hard nature of our mids in five years!!).:thumbsu:

Shocking news.

I was diagnosed with T1 diabetes a year ago, so it brought back a few feelings after reading the article. I wouldn't wish this condtion on anyone. It sucks ass.

All the best to him, I'll be following his career with interest from now on:thumbsu::thumbsu:

Its great to hear he'll be fine, but according to the article it appreared to be a very close call, which is a bit of a concern considering the all the medical expertise that AFL clubs have
