I don't see what is so bad about what Rowe said. He wasn't talking about now, but the year they played together at Glenelg. I didn't see a huge amount of Glenelg games that year but from what I did see I don't think it's too unfair to argue Douglas was ahead of Gibbs, although there probably wasn't much between them. Douglas is two years older than Gibbs, though.

I didn't watch them play but if that were true then why on earth did Gibbs go #1?

I agree. Its not that much of an outrageous statement considering Douglas had an AFL pre season and training schedule behind him, was 19 and Gibbs had just turned 17.

Only cause D comes before G

The comment as a whole has minimal overall relevance given the age difference and Douglas being already in the AFL system. He was a solid wing who played some standout games (like 30 disp, 6 goals v Port), but given he played half a season of senior SANFL as a 16 year old and a full season as a 17 year old, didnt get dropped once and more than held his own and had the odd dominant 3 vote game, averaged 20 disposals and a goal a game and finished 3rd in the BNF in just 16 games...and just for the icing on the cake, was captain of the U18 team, led the championships in contested possessions, rebound 50s and tackles, was 2nd in clearances and 3rd in total disposals..how many kids do that?

Thats why he went 1.

Given all that as a 17 year old....put a 19 year old Gibbs in the SANFL last year...which would have been his 4th at senior SANFL level...he most likely could have dominated.

Dangerfield 21 possessions. I can see why Neil Craig is not happy with Dangerfields fitness level. What he does is pretty good but his workrate is poor. Played mainly accross half forward for 3 quarters and spent only a few minutes in the midfield. Last quarter played across half back.

Porplycia played 3 quarters and played reasonably well. Played on the ball for majority if not all 3 quarters and also kicked a goal. His first half he was slightly quiet but in the third quarter he was exeptional. His skills a feature once again.

Schmidt took a knock to the head very early in the game and went off injured and didnt return

Think Porps is right to go in round 1?

Think Porps is right to go in round 1?

The first half I thought no but the third quarter he was so impressive and everything he did was silky. Because he is such a class player i would be very tempted to play him round 1 against Collingwood. He didnt appear to tire or anything so I wouldnt think fitness would be that much of a problem for him.

In Canberra at the moment. Sports Tonight just advertised that they are going to show a clip of Porps retrun to acton in a couple of mins. If you are in the eastern states, get on it.

OK just got back from Naurlunga. I have some good news nd some bad news.

I wasnt looking at South players and didnt notice Smack out there untill 3 qtr time.

Gill - With the games for the last two weeks He should be pushing for selection. He played off the wing all game. And got alot of the ball, I think he had 3-4 goals. I would give him an A- (and in the best 2 for on the field (fighting with Clint Alleway))

Armstrong - He played on the Wing. Will he kick the f***ing ball. From a guess I would say he had 15-20 possesions. But he had 3 kicks. And all from 20-30m out of goal. He gets around but isnt using much of his pace. 1 goal. I would give him a B

Davis - Played most of the game in Defence with a short spurt in the 3rd qtr in the midfield. He shut down his opposition nicely, but he didnt do much else. He played pretty good in the midfield. He showed some pace running down a Panthers player in the 3rd. And he goes in hard at the ball. 1 negative, when teammates have the ball and are near him, he wont offer an option or sheapard. He just looks lazy sometimes. I would give him a C+

Sloane - Great game for when he was on the field. He played in the midfield. Got his hands on the ball, and boy can he tackle. BUT he loves tacking to much, bit annoying when he gets outnumbers 3-1 goes in hard at the ball, wins a free for holding the ball, Then gets up with an injured leg. He was able to walk but struggling. He came back from the rooms about 5-10min later in the 2nd. With ice on his calf. Its almost certain to be a calf injury, but with the pain he was in when he got up, im expecting bad news with a tear. For when he was on A+

McKernan - I didnt notice him out there in the first 3 qtrs. In the last he started on Gill, kept him quite. But after mid way throught the last I didnt notice him again.

Reserves - Im unsure what North's score was. When the siren went it was South 104 North 103 And North got a goal after the siren to make it North 109 South 104. But just before the seniors came out it was changed to North 111 South 104.

Seniors - North 22.10.142 South 13.10.88

and to ad to the bad news. Im sun burnt. both arms, my knees and my face:(

Did anyone go to the Centrals vs Sturt game this afternoon?? I wanna know if Symesy played and if he did, how he went? I would've gone, but I only just realised it was today . My friends went to training this morning and they said he took off pretty quick once training had finished, and he was on the permission to play list, so I assume he played...?

By the way,any news on training this morning? I heard it was going to be a pretty heavy session. I'd just like to know if all the players got through it OK.

Sports Tonight in Perth showed Porps doing some pretty handy things. They also showed VB and Truck getting through training and claimed they'd be up for Round 1 selection.

Symes, Truck and VB all trained with the main group, this suggests to me that they were not quite ready to play this week

out of the three I would only risk Rutten for round 1 without any match practice

Symes I would bring back through the sanfl and I would give VB anther couple of weeks on the track just to be sure that injury is right

aboat time:p

I thaught you and the sloane ranger would of been the first people here

Been out most of the day, which is why it took me until page 4 or 5 or whatever it was to say anything in the nomination thread. Do appreciate the report though!

Bloody McKernan AND Davis are playing away from the forward-line in the SANFL now, gah. Get it right dammit. You've got ruckmen-sized FORWARDS just waiting to play for you and you stick them on the wing and in defence

Great stuff Riggy. :thumbsu: :)

Pushing for selection, no thanks. We all know how good he is at this level but with Walker and Tippett improving and Hentschel working his way back into form we don’t need Gill. He was only a stop gap solution and a rather unsuccessful one at that. He does tend to line-up on the wing quite often with North obviously showing off his great fitness and work rate. Pleased to hear he’s fit and playing well ahead of Round 1 but in all honesty he should only be a last resort.

Armstrong - He played on the Wing. Will he kick the f***ing ball. From a guess I would say he had 15-20 possesions. But he had 3 kicks. And all from 20-30m out of goal. He gets around but isnt using much of his pace. 1 goal. I would give him a B
I like Armstrong and actually think he got a rough deal this pre-season as he trained strongly and performed whenever he was given the opportunity. I would’ve liked to see him given a few more games to press his claims but at the end of the day he’s still young and hasn’t even made his SANFL league debut. I agree that he is sometimes to keen to handball because he does have neat foot skills. North have a bye to open the season but I hope he plays in Round 2.

Davis - Played most of the game in Defence with a short spurt in the 3rd qtr in the midfield. He shut down his opposition nicely, but he didnt do much else. He played pretty good in the midfield. He played in the midfield? A 196cm midfielder! No wonder Rendell harps on about his versatility. That’s all well and good but we really need him to develop into a gun KPP, hopefully as a key marking forward option. Everything I’ve read seems to indicate he’s got a great ability to take a contested mark so lets hope he can hit the weights hard and get confidence in his body. I haven’t ever seen Davis play a game so I’m intrigued to watch him and see what my impressions are.

Another youngster injured just before the start of the season, seems this happens every year. Hopefully he’s not out too long because it sounds as though he had played himself into the Roosters line-up to start the season. Still, impressive signs though.

McKernan - I didnt notice him out there in the first 3 qtrs. In the last he started on Gill, kept him quite. But after mid way throught the last I didnt notice him again.
To not even notice him when you knew he was playing is a little concerning. :p I hope he hasn’t played himself out of South’s team come next weekend.

I didnt know if any crows players were playing with South. At 3 qtr time when I went to get a coke I found a peice of paper with the team lists. Thats when I found out he was playing.

anyway, i changed ends each qtr to be at the Roosters forward line. So with Davis and McKernan both at the other end I couldnt see them.

and cmndstab. Davis does not look tall. He looks like a bloody midfielder with his size.

Have you ever stopped to think about the SANFL clubs these guys play for? They see these guys play, they know what they bring to the table and obviously they've got to look out for their own interests rather than just developing them for the AFC. If South feel McKernan is better suited to defence or even the wing at this stage of his career then I trust their judgment. Not many teenagers are able to hold down key forward positions at league level so it’ll take both Davis and McKernan time to settle in at that level.

You, I and probably the Crows all hope they develop into key forwards but at this stage as long as they’re out on the park and getting a few touches they’ll be satisfied. They’ll eventually settle into the positions they were destined to fill. And in any case, doesn't Rendell see Davis as a CHB down the track? Remember him talking up his performance against Watts and how he expects them to have many duels in the future? Not thrilled about that actually.
