Analysis Season 2020 - What should the season look like now?

Plenty of people will put an asterisk against it.

They're the same people that will put asterisks against any premiership.

Apparently 88% of the playing group voted for games to go ahead.
The consensus is that they want the AFL to call it off, not them.
Apparently the way the players contracts are written, if it is them that drive the AFL to not play then they won’t get payed.

So only 12% of them thought the issue was bad enough to take a pay cut.

Generally the AFL doesn’t charter flights, but I understand this is being seriously considered at the moment.

Maybe getting in early

"Most of the world’s airlines will be bankrupt by the end of May 2020 due to the ongoing effects of coronavirus", a Sydney-based aviation consultant has warned.

CAPA Centre for Aviation made the dramatic prediction as countries lock down their borders in light of the spread of COVID-19 which has caused more than 170,000 infections and 6,500 deaths around the world.

I would hazard to guess most businesses, big and small will be in the same boat.

The government is just prolonging the pain, by dragging the shut down out.

I genuinely don’t understand how people still believe things might return to normal by May or June.

The government keeps saying 6 months, because they know we’re going in to winter, and the only way our health care system can cope is to drag it out.

Our tourism sector, hospitality sector and all the support businesses are going to be in for a world of pain.

If China is on top of their pandemic, many of our primary industries might survive, if we can keep our mining and farming, pastoral and commercial fishing sectors going, as well as the transport industry needed to move these goods.

Europe is shutting down, and hoping summer slows the virus.

The rest of Asia is not far behind now, as the virus is growing exponentially there now. Except for China, Singapore, Korea and Japan.

If the northern hemisphere recovers before us, they’re going to close their borders to Australia, and we won’t be getting international tourists back until we recover.

In the States, businesses are taking it upon themselves to shut down. MGM, the largest casino operator in America has shut all their casinos. They own 10 of the biggest casinos in Vegas, not sure what they own in Atlantic city.

We were always going to suffer economically. Tourism and hospitality were always going to be the hardest hit.

We had the chance to stop it, but the majority buried their heads in the sand.

We could have closed our borders early. And we could have recovered by May.

If Europe recovers early, we would have been open for businesses, ready for them.

Instead we’re heading down the path of the UK, but with a longer time line.

And we’re going to find the rest of the world has their door shut to us until we get on top of it here.

And how informed would be 75% of the players be given they are under the age of 23-24 with no formal education?
Probably about as informed as the rest of the population.
If they watch the news/TV?

Depends how much you read and people you know; I'm not sure a lot of 18-24 year olds would, although I think AFL players would be a little more informed than the average 18-24 year old.

Given they'll actually have an influence on whether or not their business shuts down (unlike the rest of us) they should be reading up about it.

I think you have to consider the mindset of these guys - they're professional sports players, they're paid to do a specific thing - play a game. They have just gone through a grueling pre-season and for months now have been mentally and physically priming to play round one on a set day. Professional athletes train to push through mental barriers, and even physical injuries weekly - some requiring surgery to fix - to get out there and do what they're trained to do. Suddenly they're being asked if they think they should stop or suspend doing what they've literally been training for.

Are we genuinely expecting to get an overwhelming majority to say yes to that?

NO AFL CROWDS WOULD COST LIONS $5M
Brisbane chief executive Greg Swann says if the 2020 AFL season is played entirely behind closed doors it would cost the club up to $5 million.
While modelling is being done to forecast the financial impact of various outcomes of the coronavirus pandemic, playing all their home matches without crowds was a bleak scenario for the Lions.
“From a gates perspective it’s going to cost us the best part of $5 million if we don’t play in front of crowds,” Swann said.
“All the clubs are tightening their belts, we’re all going through cost savings.”

Gerard's opinion line up with mine - wait until early June and try and run the season 17 weeks straight through and finish the season in October. Also made the point that NFL has a wildcard round in the finals to guard against inequality, for example some teams will have 9 home games and some will have 8, so could see a similar thing making sense in Aus.
Problem with that is that nobody has any idea how long this run will last.
What if no AFL players test positive until June?
We have just wasted two and one half months of opportunity and the risk the entire AFL going bankrupt is much higher.
Gerard is making the assumption it will be done by then. I have seen some predictions it will be peaking as late as July/August.
We must start playing games ASAP if we want our comp to be around next year.

EDIT
Just like to add the players themselves would have less chance of catching it given the education they would have received and the isolation procedures in place at each club. If they catch it they are in a low risk group. Given there are only 40-50 per team (800 in the comp?) that is 800 out of 25 million so add nothing at all to the risk to the rest of the population. Each club also has two dedicated doctors to look after them - a far greater doctor to patient ratio than the rest of the population. The players are in good hands even if they do get sick and are no more risk to others than anyone else.

Not sure what you mean by it adds nothing to the risk of 25 million...that’s the point of all this, everyone is meant to limit everything they are doing. The concern isn’t about the players getting sick, it’s who they can potentially give it to.

Our coach and CEO are in a high risk group for starters. There’s also all our assistant coaches and support staff that are part of game day no matter what.
For every player, they are still likely to see friends, wife and kids or parents through the season.
Their partner or friends are likely to be interacting with their own family and friends.

It’s not just 800 people, it’s a fair bit more.

Greg Sawnn was on Triple M talking about the 31K membership goal they have said a few members have rang up wanting a refund. He also said most members are sticking with the club and that to get the season done it could be games being played in October and November.

I’ve been waiting for a statement from the club about our memberships.

I certainly haven’t received an email asking me if I’m going to stick with the club.

I think you’ll find, as soon as games are suspended, the club will receive a lot of phone calls asking what’s going on in regards to memberships and refunds.

If they’re not proactive, they might find that those few phone calls start growing exponentially.

Look, I love my sport. But honestly the survival of sporting leagues and those employed by them, is pretty low on my list of priorities for economic help from the government.

Actually. Arts, Entertainment and Sports would all be right at the bottom.

Primary and manufacturing industries first. Those that feed us, and clothe us, make items essential for our survival. Along with science and medicine.

Then service industries next. That sell the goods from primary and manufacturing industries.

Technology and education next.

I’m sure there’s more.

But sports, entertainment and religion are rock bottom.
