Is there really much harm in getting a few games in first?
What happens if we get half way through (say) Round 2 and then one (or more) of the teams to play get a positive test for a player or coach or whatever?
So then the rest of Round 2 is called off?, postponed?, teams given 2 points each?
Then we soldier on to Round 3 with one, two , three or more teams quarantined.
Last team standing is awarded the Premiership?
It has farce written all over it.
It won't end well and no-one will be happy.
Germany's just gone into total lockdown. We won't be far away . Things are moving quickly.
For rich and resourced people test results can be derived in a couple of hours, as per Dutton yesterday.
All I can find is this
Coronavirus LOCKDOWN: Germany cancels gatherings of 1,000 people
GERMAN leader Angela Merkel has ordered the cancellation of all public events with expected crowds in excess of 1,000 people as the country tries to tackle the spread of coronavirus.www.express.co.uk
That was three days ago.
The rest of us can remain blissfully ignorant.
Maybe not such a bad thing?
I assumed there was private testing available in the US, but apparently Oklahoma used 70% of its daily capacity to test players before the NBA suspension. For rich and resourced people test results can be derived in a couple of hours, as per Dutton yesterday.
I've had on the ground reports from friends overseas that the major Euro countries are preparing for lockdown. Unconfirmed but believe Germany has closed all schools etc.I didn't see the article so don't know where to find it, but over breakfast this morning friends were reading out to me the border controls countries from Europe were implementing. Almost every country is closing borders to non citizens from what I was hearing. Can anyone else confirm or seen anything to the contrary?

I don't know if testing travellers on arrival is necessarily effective. Yesterday the US had recorded more cases of screeners at airports getting the virus themselves than arrivals with the virus. South Korea made travellers download an app and report symptoms through it.I've had on the ground reports from friends overseas that the major Euro countries are preparing for lockdown. Of course AUS is just letting most people in ,no vetting.
Incompetent.
Bryce Retzlaff come on down!Jackson Paine still kicking around Queensland footy?
It does seem like the season will be suspended at some point, but reading the afl statement again it reads like the decision to go forward is driven by the nature of the TV deals. It seems like the amount paid will be proportionally lower when fewer games are played, and with teams already being told that they need to expect to make redundancies I suspect the decision is to try and make sure as many jobs are saved as can be.
Honestly it's hard to fault them for that decision, even if the season is cancelled at some point it makes sense for them to try and save what they can of peoples livelihoods. Given everything's in empty stadiums I doubt going forward will exacerbate the spread of the virus in the community anyway
The 12-person AFL executive last year earned $10.7 million at an average of $894,000.

Obviously 2020 is going to hit all clubs hard with the prospect of no revenue coming in and contracts/staff to honour . I feel that having a young list we're better placed than most and also our guys are likely to be able to stay fitter because the Melbourne winter could be quite dire if quarantines kick in and you have that inner city environment where the virus is likely to be more prevalent . I'm not a medical person ,but that just seems logical to me.In support of your post
The AFL has told its 18 clubs they must find up to $5 million each in savings by slashing costs and taking pay cuts across staff and players in an effort to safeguard jobs during the coronavirus pandemic.
The threat of a disastrous financial situation — which sits alongside the alarming health crisis — will also see the AFL executive, including league boss Gillon McLachlan, sacrifice significant portions of their own pay as a result.
In two separate phone hook-ups with AFL presidents and chief executives on Saturday, the league painted a bleak picture of the coming months.
Fears are that clubs could have a quarter of their playing lists affected by the virus this year.
The AFL believes the only way to combat the financial hole that COVID-19 threatens – in terms of matches played without crowds and the near certainty of postponed games – was to cut costs across the board.
The AFL will also speak with the AFL Players’ Association about the likelihood of players taking pay cuts.
The league is believed to have told clubs they will not help them fight the economic tsunami that is on the horizon unless they are prepared to streamline their own operations, including football department expenditure.

If the clubs can do that, the AFL would agree to help keep the clubs operational if the crisis runs longer than expected.
Given the clubs are all different in terms of their financial status, it was agreed there wouldn’t be a percentage placed on the savings required from each club, but it will range between $3 million and $5 million for each organisation.
The AFL told the club presidents and chairmen that the league’s highest paid administrators will take pay cuts in an effort to save as many football jobs as possible.

Warm(ish) days. Cool(ish) nights.I'd hope your right, but my experience had been winter illness rips through Brisbane like a hot knife because the weather means we're all pretty lax about taking necessary precautions up here. Hopefully the high profile of the coronavirus means things are different this year
