Serious question: where have Geelong improved in 2009 ?

They were never going to improve in anything more than small increments anywhere except in the key forward department.

The majority of the other players are already at the peak of their powers, or just short of, meaning only small incremental improvements were possible (with the exception of Harry Taylor). Over all, I'd say they have improved - quite a few of their mids have made next steps, while none have really done anything worse than stay the same.

The only way a big improvement was going to come is with their key forwards - sadly for Geelong, Hawkins has still not come along, and Mooney has gone backwards.

Mumford. A ruck duo of Ottens and Mumford is much better than Ottens and Blake.

Selwood's better
SJ's better
Chapman's better
Rooke's better
Byrne's better
Varcoe's better

Mooney's worse
Blake's worse
Ling's worse
Harley's worse
Scarlett's worse
Stokes' worse

The rest are about where they were last year.

Becaus their challengers have...

pathetic troll. Why are Hawthorn slumped below Essendon and Carlton...? Doesnt say much about their maturity or resolve.

Just thank St Kilda and Geelong for putting on a great spectacle and beg us for forgiveness for the trash we were dished up last night. :thumbsu:

Haven't really seen a lot of cats games this year so difficult to comment. From what I have seen though they haven't changed their game plan at all and are still unable to handle the pressure that some teams apply. They are just extremely skilled, well drilled and hard at the ball and this is what they have carried into 09.

It would seem though that both the saints and the doggies have learnt plenty from their finals campaign in 08 and have honed their skills and game plan and are playing far and away the better footy of the three.

No team though would be foolish enough to think that Geelong still aren't capable of winning the GF though just because they lost today. The loss of SJ was massive and had imo an enormous impact on the game.

I think it would be fair to say Geelong aren't playing as well as they were about halfway through last year, but that is just my opinion.

Bulldogs, Collingwood and the Saints are three teams that are really on the up. Geelong have a forward line dilemna, but their midfielders make up for it.

Hawks, Richmond and North are 3 teams that are going well backwards, and are now total dud teams of the competition.

Byrnes and Varcoe have lifted this year.

Assuming the OP should be taken seriously thats a good point. In all honestly any improvement we make this year on last year will be marginal, Saints and the Dogs have improved tremendously.

Hawthorn have dropped off completely, how disappointing.

I think Geelong go harder and are more physical than last year
and I think it will put them in good stead come GF day.

Ablett and Selwood are machines, they are more desperate,
Selwood was always going to be better in 2009, the writing
was on the wall last year and this year he nothing but elite.

Bartel looks to have trimmed down and looks more settled in
his role - which is different to when he won the Brownlow, I
think he is a touch quicker.

Chapman and Stevie J are in better form - not that I thought
they had bad years the past couple, but their form at the moment
is up there with Roos.

Enrights having a better year - as is Varcoe.

I think Geelong have improved in areas that will suit them come
September - when the going gets tough.

The Cats younger brigade is playing better. People can say what they want about Hawkins, but he has improved considerably since last year. Granted he was quite horrible today but considering how good the Saints defense is I am not too surprised. Varcoe, Brynes, Mumford and Taylor have all improved significantly; Rookie is playing better, as is Steve Johnson, Selwood etc etc.

Apparently we choked, this is despite being four goals down in the last and levelling the game.

Ah, BigFooty, the home of desperate souls

Although 13-1 is an amazing season so far, you can't ignore that Geelong are slipping. The poor shooting at goal in the GF has affected the side - Mooney gives it off from 20m out, Ablett marks 15m out and dribbles a high risk goal through instead of taking a simple set shot.
Varoce has improved, Selwood and S.J. are probably slightly up too, but Geelong is cracking a little more each week. What happens next week in Brisbane will be fascinating after today's game
