I am not from this league however I saw the interview of the lyndale president last night on the local footy show taking a positive steep to right the culture around the club . Reading the previous post I would think this would include players and supporters .good luck to the president and committee with this endeavour as local footy need all it clubs

Spot on. We all know that most clubs genuinely have the right intentions in terms of how to go about their football and how they conduct themselves off the field but every single club I've ever come across has a few bad apples so let's not tarnish them all with the same brush.

But Greg we need to own the fact that we seem to have more “bad apples” and issues with discipline than other leagues. Yet another black eye for our comp on the weekend. It is getting embarrassing and we can no longer accept the argument that the minority is spoiling it for the majority.

The GF that was called off at half time a few years ago should have been the line in the sand but here we are a few years down the track, with king hits, umpires assaulted, all in brawls and games being called off every 2nd week. Our league is a laughing stock and time for HQ to grow some plums and get this sorted. Loss of points, restrictions on sales of grog and other sanctions need to be considered.

I don't disagree with you that some clubs have more "bad apples" than others. Some clubs are also quite weak in terms of leadership or driving a good culture which allows this kind of behavior to fester. If the president is serious about the club looking to improve then this is their line in the sand moment and good on them for identifying it, taking interim measures and hopefully moving forward in the right manner.

A club like Lyndale needs to get advice & help from HQ get them to guide & recommend personnel that can help them around the club & help them turn it around seeking out a relatively respected coach who can guide them through some tough times, most clubs ask for applications & get *rap apply, see if HQ can help in this situation as this appointment will set the agenda.

Interesting comments there Gary, I agree in part but id suggest a year in recess to work through the issues. There would be quite a few clubs that would make dubious decisions relating to their coaching and those decisions are made by the clubs committee. 3rd and 4th division are in serious trouble and the league has a massive issue to sort it out, as i've said previously, this shit has ramifications for the young umpires who are trying to make their way to Div 1, they need to be protected from these types of clubs and their supporters. What has made the situation worse is the debacle in Div 2 on the weekend with another shit bloke sniping, hopefully he'll get 10 years and the SFNL will come down hard.

I realise that this these articles are usually subject to that obnoxious pay wall (for local footy - really HS?) so here it is for those who can’t access.

A PLAYER was knocked unconscious as fighting marred another senior match in the Southern Football Netball League yesterday.

The 20-year-old Hampton player was allegedly struck off the ball as the Hammers celebrated a goal that put them one point in front with one second left in the game against Skye at Carrum Downs Recreation Reserve.

SFL CLUBS PUT ON NOTICE OVER VIOLENCE

It triggered what Hampton coach Craig McIndoe called a “mass all-in brawl’’.

The umpires called off the match.

SFNL head of umpiring Peter Marshall confirmed a Skye player had been reported by three umpires for striking.

McIndoe said his player was “knocked out cold’’.

“He was out for a good minute, absolutely motionless. But he’s got no structural damage to his face, thankfully,’’ he said.

“He had a massive headache and was vomiting and stuff like that. He went off to hospital.’’

McIndoe said a spectator went on to the ground to assist the Hampton player as the brawl continued, prompting the umpires to call the game.

MASS BRAWL ENDS WOMEN’S MATCH

Asked if his club would take the matter to police, McIndoe said: “If that was my son, I’d be pressing charges.’’

Three other games in the Southern league have been called off in the past month, most notably the Division 4 match between Lyndale and Sandown.

It prompted Lyndale’s committee to forfeit the final two rounds of the season.

Marshall said it was another “very disappointing’’ incident.

“Madness in the ‘burbs,’’ he said.

“Remember why we’re playing the game, for God’s sake. It’s a game of football.’’

Southern CEO Mike Palmer.

Southern CEO Mike Palmer said this morning he was fed up with bad player behaviour.

“I’m completely sick of it,’’ he said.

ASHWOOD STAR TO FIGHT LIFE BAN AT VCAT

“It’s so absolutely unnecessary and pointless, completely unacceptable. And it goes on. We’ve had a spate of really poor behaviour and bad incidents and obviously this one like the others will be treated on its merits and processed through the tribunal. But we’ve got better things to do than to be dealing with this sort of thing on a weekly basis. It needs to stop. People need to grow up.’’

VIOLENCE MARRING LOCAL LEAGUE

— A Parkmore Springvale Districts player is handed a life ban after being found guilty of striking a teenage umpire. The umpire later says he feels sorry for his attacker.

— A women’s match between Chelsea Heights and Doveton Eagles is abandoned and the SFNL flags fines for both clubs after a mass brawl between players.

— Lyndale forfeits its last two games of the season in the seniors and reserves after an incident where one of its players was “felled”. Lyndale president Ed McLean said it caused “bedlam”.

— The league puts clubs on notice after a series of violent incidents, calling clubs individually to stress the season must finish on a positive note.

— Star Ashwood forward Dale Carroll will head to VCAT to appeal a five-match ban which tipped him over the 16-week deregistration threshold.

A real problem confronting the league no doubt.
I’m not sure you can single out div3 &4 though. We’ve just had a div 2 game called off, there was a feature match in div 1 earlier in the year that was all over social media with an all in brawl. A few women’s games ending early and I’ve heard of several other incidents that haven’t made it into the papers also.

I agree with your comments about young umpires, I’d suggest we raise the pay for umpires and try and attract more experienced umpires from other Comps. More experienced umpires alongside those younger guys and girls in tough situations can only be a good thing. And I’m not suggesting these incidents are the umpires fault in any way. It’s an important role in our game and we should be trying to get more of the best into our Comp

This is one step that must be taken. Whilst responsibility ultimately sits with the clubs and the individuals/players on regulating their behaviour, the umpires have a big impact..

I've seen a lot of acts that are purely out of frustration, not excusable by any means, but the level of umpiring is absolutely atrocious at present. I respect umpires and recognize they have an important role to play to ensure we are able to go out there and have a kick but nothing beats a good umpire that can make good decisions, engage in adult discussion (not just pay 50m penalties when asked a question), but most importantly be able to control a game and the players within it.

David Cannizzo must be breathing a sigh of relief this year. How long before Mike Palmer starts handing out his resume?

Cannizzo had a chance to show some leadership after the Mt Waverley V CPL fiasco a few years back but failed miserably. That should have been the line in the sand moment for this comp and no wonder the SFNL is seriously on the nose.

This has wider impacts for the league and member clubs. If a potential recruit was weighing up a choice between say an MPNFL or SNFL club this stuff will surely impact on that decision.

Talk is cheap and time to take a tough stance.

This was one of the reasons a few of us moved across to the Amateurs.....No drunken idiots hurling abuse and the standard of football is way better than expected.
I have no regrets with the move and only wished I had done it earlier.

Maybe the focus, instead of building a 4 division competition, should of been trimming back clubs to create a stronger league with culture focused financial clubs

as someone who has coached I always tell my players that they will make more mistakes than the umpires and that if they argue and carry on they will not play for me until they change their ways as if they are doing this sort of thing in the home and away season then I am not going to be able to trust them in the finals and I will not let them cost their team mate a finals game . If they don't like it then I put a signed clearance form on the table and tell them to go find a new club .
too set a culture you need to set a standard and live by it from the committee to the water boy . Also be prepared to tell the knob spanker supporters to go find a new club as they are banned from attending any home and away games this takes balls to do, but one knob tarnishes the whole club .
As for the league the need to start with hefty suspension for players abusing umpires and protect them more as good young umpires will walk away from the abuse. you can not have a game of footy with out the boys and girls in white

CPL ? hahaha coach has got no idea , unless he's got the cattle? Frankston all the way lacey knows his shit and has recruited well
Now I was wrong about funky town dolphins but spot on with CPL , straight sets , need a coach who ain't all show and has some sort of experience, any sort of experience
