Shaun Burgoyne- what's he REALLY worth?

SB - you've spouted that in many threads. When will you read others responses?

Burgoyne wouldn't go into the PSD...he'd go into the ND.

Will Melbourne give up the two best 18yo's for him? Of course not.
No-one would.

Sydney have stated they are getting the best kid at #6.
Fremantle would have to be a long-shot seeing as they are in rebuild mode, and SB has stated he wants to go to Melbourne.

You could re-draft a player that doesn't want to be there - but I thought you had salary cap issues (might have just been $$$ issues) - which would mean you couldn't afford him.

Hawks have next pick.

IF Port continue to be unrealistic, then Burgoyne has a decision whether to concede and play for Port, someone else - or take a risk in the ND, where's he's probably 90% likely to end up at the Hawks, drafted at pick #9.

What Hawks add to #9 is to counter the risk that Fremantle will draft him at #7, or you will re-draft a player that doesn't want to be there and pay him 800k for the privilege.

So that means that Rutten is supremely overrated and hes 'no champion' due to his one AA eons ago. What about Johncock, who most of the Crows board talk of as 'an AA quality player' (despite never being close to AA). Im sure the Crows board would go bananas if he was traded for anything less than a first round pick and something a bit extra.
This came up midway through 2008 when it was rumored he was going to Port. The Port board consensus was that it was a 2nd round pick, PSD or not interested.

Harsh call about the not being close to AA selection.

And nobody is over rating Rutten who has half a clue on our board. We are aware of his brilliance at FB just as we are aware of his deficiencies and inflexibility.

Port want the value of Burgoyne at his best and I cant say I blame them.
But I'm not sure if any market works like that. It would be a shame for your fans if you lost him for nothing to prove a point.

Adelaide board consensus was Port's 1st round, 4th pick overall.

Funny how fans of AFL clubs work... homerism goes off the roof.

9= Ziebell or Sidebottom or Shoenmakers etc or
McEvoy or Dangerfield or Rioli
Armitage or Nathan Brown (Coll) or Jack Riewoldt
Mitch Clark or Higgins or Birchall

Lottery!

There is a lot of crap on this thread though.

Pick 9 + Birchall would be a pretty fair deal. Theres a lot of overrating of Birchall going on in this thread. Hes no superstar. Just because hes good value and consistently gets decent DT scores doesnt make him a superstar.

Burgoyne has had one dissapointing year in the last 6 - this year, due to injury. For such a 'dissapointing' year in 2008, he still managed over a goal a game and 20 touches a match - playing injured for 3/4 of the year. 2007 he was very nearly AA again - 39 goals playing in the midfield is no sneeze. 2006 AA. 05 was injury riddled but made his move into the midfield. His move into defence in 2004 was an absolute key to the premiership that year.

His inability to break a tag is overrated and a myth. The fact hes only had one 'good' year is drastically untrue and a myth.

Make no mistake, hes the exact sort of player that could push Hawthorn over the line to another premiership.

Hes worth pick 9 and something extra. Not Lewis extra. But something extra.

He is a midfielder that has topped 30 disposals only FOUR times in his career..

I have gone cold given Choco's silly stance. drop it, and move on Jolly.

31 disps (17 kicks 14 hballs), 8 marks, 9 tackles and a goal in Rd 8 15-pt loss to Hawthorn at Aurora Stadium (17 May 2008)

28 disps (20 kicks 8 hballs), 8 marks, 4 tackles and 2 goals in Rd 20 2-pt loss to Collingwood at AAMI Stadium (18 Aug 2006)

34 disps (18 kicks 16 hballs), 4 marks, 7 tackles and 2 goals in Rd 12 37-pt win over West Coast at AAMI Stadium (17 Jun 2006)

26 disps (19 kicks 7 hballs), 7 marks, 9 tackles and 2 goals in Rd 6 50-pt loss to Adelaide at AAMI Stadium (6 May 2006)

30 disps (18 kicks 12 hballs) and 8 marks in Rd 21 30-pt win over Brisbane at the Gabba (20 Aug 2005)

32 disps (20 kicks 12 hballs), 11 marks and a goal in Rd 20 7-pt loss to Adelaide at AAMI Stadium (13 Aug 2005)

Never averaged more than 21 disposals per game in his career. Jordan Lewis has averaged more than 24 touches in his last 3 years. Do the Power really want 9 + Lewis for S. Burgoyne? They must be kidding right?

Amazing how Hawks supporters have low rate the man Clarkson has wanted to bring to the Hawks since he left Port. Last time SB came out of contract Clarkson said he was an 'absolute ripper player'.

Guess what? Absolute rippers cost more than Hawthorn's rejects and a pick in a heavily compromised draft .

He averaged 20 disposals in 2006 and made the AA team.

The reason why he made that team was because of his versatility... he played the year dominating in the backlines, midfield, and up forward.

He had a bit of a breakout year in 2006 and has gone backwards ever sinced. Frustratingly inconsistent with only flashes of brilliance. Jordan Lewis looks like a kid that can get the job done week in, week out even if he isn't half as skilled as S. Burgoyne. I wouldn't even do a straight swap between the two let alone pick 9 thrown in.

If Nick Stevens is worth a first rounder and Didak..Burgoyne is 20x's the player so palm over 9 and Franklin Hawkers. The joys of trading with Choco and co.

When you have been minor premiers and competing for the premiership for the past 2 years and a young talented player wants to leave:

Option A - Gift a young talented player who is a big part to the team to a top 2 premiership contending team for a 2nd round draft pick

Option B - Let him walk into the PSD to the Wooden Spooners.

What do you think is the smarter move?

Keep on spinning that same ol crap - the fact is that Port outsmarted themselves and ended up losing a star player for zero! (and then tried to justify it with loads of hot air)

Option A is a blatant untruth... but then Port are masters of spinning out shiite continuously with the adage that some of it sticks....... too bad most of it blew back into their own faces. :)

Spot on. Pretty much the consensus amongst nuetral supporters. :thumbsu:

How did we try to outsmart themselves?

If I haven't made it clear to you, then try this scenario:

- After the 09 GF, an out of contract Nick Riewoldt requests a trade to Geelong.
- Saints will try their best to get him to Geelong only in a fair deal.
- Geelong offers a fringe player and a 2nd round draft pick only, and that is the highest offer they'll go. Nick Riewoldt only wants to go to Geelong.

What do you do? Gift Geelong the premiership for nothing, or let him walk to the Wooden Spooners?

And no it did not blow back into our faces, we won a premiership the year after.

Why are u ranking players by amount of disposals?

Kane Cornes would be the best player in the league then.

It's certainly not the be-all end-all of how players should be ranked but it is definitely an important stat to consider when comparing midfielders.

Why then would you consider Shaun Burgoyne to be a better player than Jordan Lewis taking into account that the latter is younger, has more upside, is less prone to injuries and more consistent?

Port need to accept about pick 9 + anything then move on and use it. Saves wasting their own time this week.
The world (including themselves) already understands they are asking too much if they're talking Lewis/Birchall as well as a mid 1st rnd pick.

May as well stop the transparent stalling and spoiling tactics and just move along.

Port are a bitter and twisted club in limbo at the moment.

Port are definately asking a bit much

Burgoyne is undoubtedly a good player but he wants to leave, must agree to his destination, will be 27 before he plays a game for the Hawks (2 seasons approx in his prime left) and has come off an injury riddled and consequentially poor season.

To ask for one of the top 10 18 year olds in Australia as well as someone like Schoenmakers (KPP defender (so rare) taken first round who has been earmarked as the cornerstone of our defence going forward) or Lewis (23 yo, consistent, hard at it, ball winning midfielder) is over the odds

Even Birchall (who is clearly underrated) is a premiership player who was a first round draft pick and is only in his third season (21 years old) - and has finished in our top 10 B & F twice already (including a premiership year and missing 3 games this year)! He is a very good player who regularly hits targets at full pace (even 50 away) that lead* the club in marks, rebound 50's and handballs in our premiership year

*edit- actually, 2nd
