Opinion Shifter's Best Ever Pick No.3: Judd or Dusty?

It is stupid, because we don't know if 2019's number 3 pick will out strip them all, do it when careers's are over because then you can judge them on what they have done because a player who has achieved as much as what Judd has over 14 seasons is always going to out do a player who has just completed his 10th season and still has 5 to go at this stage.

And so you would never ever get to do it. Imagine the article headline:

THE BEST DRAFT PICKS 1, 3,7,8,9 13, 15,16,17, 20 EVER (because 2,4,5,6,10,11,12,14,18,19 are still playing - next year maybe......)

There will always be multiple players still in the system still. How long has Burgoyne played now? Should the media sit on their hands and wait, or just go back before him some 20 years because of a thought that it was 'stupid'? Sure it's flawed, I'm with you there, yes it's unfair as well, but it's an opinion piece designed to draw clicks and comments. Enough humans can read it and apply reasonable logic and thoughtfulness to the process - I'm not Shifter's greatest fan, but I do think he is as well placed as a good many others to make a 'snapshot in time' commentary on it. As long as it is not carved in stone, we'll all be OK.

You would think Judd...but then again what was Judd like in the forward line as a marking/leading target? Verrryyy interesting.

If goals matter, Dusty is averaging about 30% more on a per game (1.1 v 0.8). Go Dusty!

Then do two lists, one for current players and one for retired players.

Tribunal clears Judd of eye-gouging
Brown: I lied in Judd eye gouge case
In the interview, Brown disclosed that he lied to help West Coast captain Chris Judd beat an eye-gouging charge that was laid against the Eagles champion after a scuffle between the two during the round-nine match at Aurora Stadium, Launceston, in late May.

Carlton career (2008–2015)
Judd had a controversial end to his 2009 season. In Carlton's elimination final loss to Brisbane, Judd was cited by the Match Review Panel for misconduct against Michael Rischitelli, after Judd made unnecessary contact near Rischitelli's eyes. The media initially reported the case as eye-gouging, and Judd created a bigger controversy when he stated that his intention was not to eye-gouge, but to push a pressure point behind Rischitelli's ear. Judd later said that his comment was intended as dry humor, but it was misinterpreted as genuine and prompted condemnation from many sources, from sports commentators to martial arts experts. After contesting the charge and appealing the penalty at the AFL Tribunal, Judd was suspended for three weeks. In another deadpan statement after the hearing, he stated "I've since watched a couple of Steven Seagal movies and realised that pressure points are no laughing matter," but he also acknowledged his own "stupidity" in the controversy.[22][23] Then, his leadership was called into question when the team misbehaved during an organised Christmas booze cruise, which saw suspensions to teammates Andrew Walker, Eddie Betts and Ryan Houlihan.

Think of what defines success in team sport. In the NFL it's the playoffs culminating in the Superbowl. The MLB? Again the playoffs, then the World Series. et al. In our game it's the finals leading into that last game in September. The home and away season games - they are just bit players. It is the finals where the lead actors strut their stuff. I want players who stand up and deliver when it matters most and deliver your club finals success and ultimately premierships. I value a player who is BOG in a final but didn't get a brownlow vote during the regular season a trillions times more than a 45 possession player who won a brownlow but had five touches in an elimination final. Snake Baker couldnt get a kick during the regular season but came alive in the finals, indeed won North a premiership. I don't give a stuff about Brownlows. Possessions. Tackles. Goals.

I want guys who stand up when it counts. And if you are fighting in the trenches, who do you want beside you?

Dustin Martin = two Norm Smiths, two flags.

im shocked dusty is only 50 games behind Judd. he'll have played more games in 2 years time.

Judd did more at an early age but had a gun team around him to develop. Dusty didn't. 2 total different careers and so hard to judge.

Judd would kill you with a thousand cuts, Dusty just blows you to smithereens in one hit.

It's evens for me.

Well, Judd played in 2 GFs. In the first he won the Norm Smith. He had the highest number of possessions for his team, the highest number of contested possessions, highest number of clearances. His team lost by 4 points.
In the second, he had the highest number of possessions for his team, the highest number of contested possessions, highest number of clearances. His team won by one point.

I think he stood up when it counted. I'm not saying he's a better performer than Martin in GFs - I'm just saying it's a bit hard to categorically state that one did better than the other.

Currently is extremely close with probably judd a nose in front

But Dusty has 6-7 years of game still left to play and will blow Judd's games away (getting 100 more games from a player like Dusty is priceless )
Dusty has more strings to his bow and can play midfield and foward judd was just a mid but a bloody good mid

Most Importantly when you say pick #3 i think that the decision should also include what the pick #3 delivers to the club that uses is
Dustin Martin is a 1 club player that will play over 350 games for the RFC

Or stick his thumbs using pressure points
