Should we take a stand against soccer?

Hell yeah, I LOVE his stuff- the Hitchhiker's Guide series, the Dirk Gently books, everything... :thumbsu::D

there is an old saying "when in rome...."
in the states they call soccer soccer because they already have thier own brand of football that we call gridiron
likewise we have our own brand of football called "australian football"
its ask, just show recognition to the prevailing culture

If AFL is such a fantastic sport why haven't any other countries bothered to pick it up over the past 100 years?

Because it's not that good!

Soccer will rule world sport forever, there's no doubting that.

How come soccer is so slow to catch on in China and India? That's a bloody great deal of the world right there. I forgot, its massive in Uzbekistan, is it? Well, i'm sure it will eventually effect me in my day to day life... eventually.

Bcoz they haven't been exposed to it yet like in New Zealand.

The local footy club i play for had a couple of Danish guys come play last season. Down in the lower grades of VAFA, Box Hill North used to have a pretty strong Japanese contingent. When I travelled to Fiji, a native bar tender talked to me for quite awhile about our indigenous code.

Aussie rules is slowly making inroads internationally. There's always the chance the New Zealand exposure could take on an avalanche effect.

What can be made of this is anybodies guess. But the fact is, Kevin Sheedy is not completely senile when he entertains the possibility of International interest. It's just a matter of getting it to work.

Let's just start a rumour that Soccer gives you aids.

Aids?

Looks like the much vaunted A League is starting to go the way of all the other "national" soccer comps - only 9000 at Suncorp stadium ( cap 50,000 + last night at the Melb v Brisbane.

Crowds like that wouldnt cover the costs and dont forget they have the summer all to themselves!

How come soccer is so slow to catch on in China and India?

Soccer is the biggest sport in China and the second biggest in India. Biggest in India's North-East region where cricket is less popular.

They might be big in numbers compared to countries with smaller populations but still a long way from being domimant sports.Cricket in India is # 1 all over the country by a mile!

McDonalds will also remain the worlds #1 restaurant chain, there's no doubting that. Doesn't mean it isn't sh1t, though.
Soccer is the biggest sport in China ....
You obviously haven't spent much (if any) time their. Having recently spent a fair amount of time in China, I can assure you this is total rubbish. Table tennis (a.k.a. ping pong) is by far and away the most popular sport in China, with a huge TV audience. And easily second is basketball - no prizes for guessing who is (without peer) the biggest sports star in China. Also volleyball is huge in China. Soccer ranks a long, long way behind these, especially once you leave Beijing or Shanghai and go inland where the vast majority of the population live. Soccer rules in Europe, 3rd world Latin America, 3rd world Africa and a few bits and pieces of 3rd world Asia. It's an easy, cheap sport to play. However, it's not so popular in China, India, USA, Japan, Canada, Australia, and some other parts of SE Asia (e,g badminton is more popular in Malaysia). Thats half the worlds population.

why as AFL fans are we so keen to prevent soccer from gaining any form of popularity???

The best thing for the Aussie Rules fan is for the AFL to feel threatened.

Maybe for a change they will start paying attention to our needs.

If the AFL had to compete for its fans, then we may see better ticket prices, less tinkering with the rules...better membership prices...more benefits to memberships etc.

Competition is the hallmark of any society. The AFL has not had to compete for our loyalty ever. And therefore they have been able to take advantage of us.

AFL is 10 times the sport soccer is. But soccer is the world game, so it is always going to have interest.

But it would be good for Demetriou to feel a bit less secure.

Look, the past 5 years, the AFL have put all their attention into the financial state of the game and securing the future of it. But this has come at the expense of the fan in the short term. Now that Demetriou has the finances in check, time to start paying attention to the fan again. And a bit of competition will ensure he has to do this.

You think the AFL hasn't had to compete for fans! Over the last 15 years, rugby league, rugby union and soccer have all targetted the AFL heartland with new teams and their showcase matches . State of Origin, Bledisloe Cup, and World Cup qualifiers all heavily sponsored by the State Government. Their teams have been gifted a new state of the art taxpayer funded stadium, and the rugby league and soccer teams are each financially backed by the main media outlets.
I don't mind the AFL having to compete for public support, I would just like it to happen on a level playing field.

Soccer and NRL has never been popular in Vic. Vic has had successful teams in each code as well.

Yet I could only name you 5 players in each side. ANd I'm a sporting buff.

Yes there is competition, but it is not tough competition for the AFL.

Hosting a soccer world cup would turn the attention squarely away from AFL for a good year. It may actually have the effect of kids playing soccer instead of football.

I think the AFL would have to address this. Soccer will never overtake the AFL, but I think the AFL would have to be careful not to lose its dominance. And in doing that, they may be forced to cater for their fans a bit more.

^That's because everybody in those countries already has played soccer, hence giving little to no scope for growth, whereas an extra 10 people playing AFL over there is probably a 100% increase

hahahahaha a+ troll

I'm still trying to figure out if this post was a joke or not. Anyway......

Soccer is crap, AFL rules and is number 1. – Opinion, no point in arguing the merits of either.

More Australians play Aussie rules than soccer – FACT – Cool. What are the numbers?

AFL has the higest paid Australian footballer, Judd earns more than Gold Coast's Culina and Syd FC's Aliosi – FACT - Harry Kewell anyone?

AFL is growing in China, South Africa and Denmark faster than soccer – FACT – Soccer is the biggest sport in Denmark, and has well settled, well attended leagues in both China and South Africa. It’s easy to grow faster than something when that something has most, if not all the population already interested.

All Australians can unite behind the teams at the AFL grand final, soccer divides people – FACT – Not so much anymore. Maybe in the old NSL.

AFL has a womens comp and national youth come - soccer has nothing – FACT – Actually, soccer has both a national womens league and junior league.

All soccer players are sissies and dive – FACT – No, not true. Sure quite a few do, but is this not a trend in AFL also?

A-league has no international players, none from Australia, Costa Rica, Thailand or anywhere – FACT – Carlos Hernandez is a Costa Rican International, there is a Thai international playing for Victory Craig Moore, Jason Culina, and quite a few that represent Australia on non-FIFA sanctioned international dates.

In AFL you can represent your country at the higest level possible - All Australian player, which is more important than socceroo – FACT, Riiiight. Did you watch the World Cup in Germany?

Soccer is losing people everywhere to AFL -The most senior people in the FFA are not from AFL – FACT – Ben Buckley anyone?

More people around the world are interested in talking about AFL because it is a more exciting game than boring soccer – FACT – Holy s*&t, my moron reader just went off the scale.

Nobody cares about the soccer world cup – FACT - Think it has stopped working. You owe me some money.

Australia will never get the soccer world cup, ever – FACT – Quite probable

Soccer gets all the money from the government, Aust rules gets nothing from the government – FACT – Wow, gotta love blanket statements.

No offence, but don’t bother posting such crap. You just look stooopid. You are an idiot – FACT

I work 6months of the year in India. Fail on India. Soccer comes about 4th or 5th in interest there (despite FIFA trying very hard to generate interest)
Cricket, daylight, Hockey, Badmitton.... then a few dogs fighting over the last morsels on the bone like Formula 1, Soccer, Volleyballl etc
