Should we take a stand against soccer?

Then don't? No-one is attacking you because you don't like soccer, and if you think that then you have pretty big persecution complex.

Who said I was under attack? Stupid post.

I made my stance on this topic clear earlier in the thread. AFL is a supeiror product and the Australian sporting market will continue to respond accordingly.

I think that was Pie_Eyed's point.

I don't think he has any problem with "to each their own"... just the ridiculous air of superiority that FIFA regurgitates, and its fans sycophantically swallow and excrete.

I especially like the "Its the WORLD game" line. As if because the rest of the world plays it automatically becomes a superior sport.

The thread is not titled 'Im sick of these arrogant Fifa-bosses imposing their superiority over us'

It is titled 'Should we take a stand against soccer?'.

There is noone from FIFA posting in this thread, if there is, please poijt me to them and I will apologise. There is however, a lot of sarky, insecure posts about forcing the game from our shores.

Which is worse?

So everyone who posts in this thread agrees with the thread title... hook, line and sinker?

Yup.

Coldplay must be the world band and therefore the best.

I'm assuming you can't see the hypocrisy of trotting out the 'the AFL is a superior product' line, stated as a fact, while simultaniously denouncing FIFA for it's 'ridiculous air of superiority'.

More sarcasm, how about providing something worthwhile??

Its pretty simple really, dont like the sport, ignore it.

I dont like League, I dont particularly like American Football either. I just dont watch them, I dont post threads calling on people to 'take a stand' against them...

Sick of this 'us against them' attitude.

I am and always been for the appreciation of soccer by those who appreciate it. What a man does in his own home with his TV is his business.
What I do however not appreciate is being told I must a) be stupid, a bogan or a philistine if I do not share his passion for the round ball game, b) accept whatever FIFA considers it's right in regard to other codes playing during it's noncing world cup round robin and c) accept that this noncing non-event (in my world) should be embraced simply because I am told it should be.

It would behoove panic merchants like Ex-PM Johhny "watch my other hand" Howard and the current lickspittle which loosely claims to be the Liberal Party to focus on the World Cup rather than a couple of timber dingies if they are really worried about the countries border security.

No. I didn't say that. I have a problem with the OP and there are many (not all) posts like it.

I am responding to those. I am also responding to those who attacked those who were responding to the OP in the same way I have been responding, when responding directly to the OP..... :)

The ridiculous air of superiority that FIFA regurgitates, and its fans sycophantically swallow and excrete.

One could argue that the AFL are showing a similar attitude with its bullish advances into Sydney...

But we love this, because its our code...

FIFA do what all sport associations do, they just do it on a much bigger scale. Its a business.
I dont see why people feel the need to be threatened or have an issue with it, its not stopping you watch Brisbane play is it??

Allright Pie-eyed, I misunderstood you, sorry. I was thrown by all the sarcasm...

I dont think you're a bogan for not liking soccer and to live your life, but I think it is a backwards (and yes, bogan) attitude to want to 'take a stand' against the foreign game. To say that Australia doesn't still house a lot of these bogans who still link the round-ball game to immigrants and everything that threatens their way of life, is ignorant.

There is no need to be threatened by Soccer, and I think the main reason people are, is because of the reasons I highlighted above.

I just chose the wrong post to quote.

I thnk if you go back to the first page you'll find both TBD and myself both took the stance that "no we do not need "take a stand" as it will sort itself out.

The issue I have with this and all the other soccer related threads which appear on an AFL forum is with those who lob on and accuse evryone not enamoured with a game they enjoy as either of sub-normal intelligence or of racism..

It is not for others question why on an AFL forum as that is why I and the vast majority are here...they like AFL...some of us to the exclusion of soccer.

If I were on a soccer forum go for your life.

Not sure if AFL really has to do a lot. A lot of people play soccer at a young age - a lot drop out when older and not many go the games. Culturally, soccer does not dominate in similar countries USA, Canada, NZ etc where other home-grown games etc have first taken a foot hold. It may be the most popular footbal code in the world but that certainly does not imply quality. Popularity and crazy money paid to top stars seems to be the main two things soccer tragics hang theit hats on. Went to last World Cup in Germany. Great party but so many dull games as there really is only a handful of great nations. I like soccer and have seen a hell of a lot of EPL live in London - and I think if AFL is marketed properly it does not have a thing to fear. I think Rugby Union is a bigger threat as it is a far better game than Soccer and appeals to the Aussie/AFL mind more.

You seriously think that the AFL are at some sort of disadvantage, don't you?

Soccer cops it from the media far more than the AFL does.
You're kidding right. The Fairfax press is actually a sponsor of soccer in Australia. Read any article by Michael Lynch or Michael Cockerill and you would believe that there was never a dud soccer match, that every FFA player was on the cusp of greatness, that the crowds are getting bigger and bigger, and that it's only a matter of time before we poor fools who actually like our own game will see the light and fall into line.

You can add Simon Hill to that list as well.
An upstart Pommy who thinks he can tell us Aussies what sport to follow to the extent where he denegrates rival codes.
He slammed footy once for not being a true football code because you bounce and handle the ball.
It's this attitude that has turned me right off soccer.

SBS is part of the problem though basically a boys club that marginalizes the game from the wider australian auidence.

The only time sbs mentions AFL is in a negative light or whinge about how much funding we get ect.

ABC has a similar agenda.

I suspect those in power at said stations are soccer fans and have a disdain for our Aussie made product in Aussie Rules.

Or perhaps they are catering for an audience?

Why would they report on AFL when the majority of people watching the station don't care about it and prefer Soccer?

Drop the patriotic act...

I've never heard anything like that on ABC.

IIRC they cover the same amount of footy and soccer - 0 games a week on TV.ABC radio does cover footy. ABC TV is mainly Sydney based (their sports section went balls when it went to that NRL prat in Sydney and Pippos left), and they're not really AFL-fanatical like the networks that have the rights are.

SBS have their niche and they're sticking to it.

I guess you're talking SBS there and not ABC .

Simply because they are a news station .
The SBS prides itself on providing an extensive world news .
It should do the same when looking at sports .

.

ABC radio is my "go to" radio for the footy, LOVE listening to the coverage.

and ABC here in perth is the only station that shows WAFL games live and then shows highlights in the news.

myth. . busted.

I don't watch SBS news that often, however I've always thought from the times I have watched it, that they give the AFL decent coverage even if there is alot more soccer news from Australia and around the world that I have absolutely no interest in.

So AFL has relevance in World News?

Simply because if you call yourself a news station and you report the domestic news then you should do it with the same professionalism that you attack the world news .

By the way , I watch the SBS . You know , the stuff in between the soccer .
Why isn't there more world sport .

.
