Brisbane were allowed to sack Leppitsch.

However Port are nowhere near as bad as the Lions were and Leppitsch only had a year to go and doubt he was as highly paid as Hinkley is.

Bear in mind Hinkley renewed his contract early and "In demand" so he would be on decent coin. Would not surprise me if he is one of the highest paid coaches in the game, ie over $700k pa.

Kern's job is safe till at least 2020.

Well over $700k, Rucci once tried to lie to save face by trying to pretend that he signed for the same amount (which is complete bullshit), even Kane agreed that Ken's new deal was around a million dollars a year mark.

According to Caro Gold Coast offered Kern somewhere in the vicinity of a 4 million dollar deal over 5 years, Port countered the GC deal by offering the same amount of money but reduced the term by a year (a re-negotiated 2018 deal + 3 more years)

Thinking about it, Kern would have to be close to the highest paid coach. I am guessing that Lyon, Longmire and Clarkson would be the highest paid, but Kern would definitely be in the next tier.

Why are they against the idea again? I forget.

Some bullshit jealousy reason. I think its because he left them to coach us. So f**king petty they are.

ffs This is the perfect way to respect and forever both Clubs to acknowledge Phil Walsh.

When the idea was first proposed I believe it was decided to take some time and let the emotion settle somewhat before making a decision (and seeing as the first game after the horrible incident was in fact a Showdown it seemed a reasonable step to take).

Not sure if there has been further discussion between the clubs but maybe it was decided / agreed that despite how tragic the incident was Phil's legacy at either club was not enough to bestow a medal that will be handed out for however long this rivalry exists. Which probably sounds a bit harsh and i dont mean it to, but lets say hypothetically Brenton Sanderson joins as a Port assistant and something happens during his first year, would Crows people be clamouring for the medal to be known as the Brenton Sanderson medal..?

Not every person in the game that passes gets a medal, statue etc but it also doesnt (or shouldnt) tarnish their contribution. To my knowledge we dont play CWD for a John McCarthy medal or have ever pushed for that to happen.

Anyway this is probably a bit full on for a banter thread. I am tipping Karl Amon to have 40 & 6 and Port to win by 119+1

Is Walsh a Life Member of the PAFC?

Club announces 2012 life members
Phil Walsh
– Port Adelaide (AFL) assistant coach 1999-2006, opposition analyst and innovation 2007-2008

Thanks

I thought he was and hence odd for the club to push back against the suggestion of the Walsh medal for Showdowns.

Seemed a perfect fit. Not just because he'd had a foot in both camps but the impact he had on people with his personality and thoughts on life as much as football. So many Port guys spoke fondly of the chats in his office and felt he influenced them as players and people. Even in his brief career as a head coach leaving Dangerfield and Fyfe to go head to head and risk losing rather than seek out a negative tactic to quell his influence. Had a feel that the game is bigger than any one result.

And with his passing a reminder that while football is important and these games are our state's biggest stage, that there are things that are more important.

At the time Port warned against making an emotional decision that wouldn't seem warranted with the passing of time. I think the opposite has happened. As time has gone on it seems even more petty. A real missed opportunity.

Bit of talk Port may wear the Prison Bar jumper.

If so show how desperate KT and Kochie are to appease their Lemming supporters.

I thought they need approval from Collingwood ?

The only true Magpies team in the AFL. :$ :p

Thanks

At the time I thought it was a good idea to have the Phil Walsh Showdown Medal. But Adelaide and Port Adelaide
agreed to leave the medal as a one-off award.
So that ended that.

I certainly understand the argument for naming it the Phil Walsh medal and at times have thought it should happen. But has his influence been greater than say the Cornes family who obviously have been a big part of both clubs history? Does the manner and age in which someone passes have more influence than another person’s accomplishments? Delicate issue that I think a lot of people will have strong views for a long time.

I guess if we are going to name it after someone who has given both clubs equal service then it really can only be named the Ian Downsborough medal – he was equally average for both clubs.

Thanks for posting - a thoughtful contribution, if a bit too reasonable for a banter thread :p

With my Crows hat on, I will of course think that it was because due to the tragic events, Phil was nailed into the public consciousness more as a Crows coach than a Port assistant, and the Port hierarchy were sensitive to that. But taking my Crows hat off, you make a reasonable point. Perhaps a one-off for that Showdown was really the answer.

But has his influence been greater than say the Cornes family who obviously have been a big part of both clubs history?

The "Cornes medal"? I suppose you make a fair point, and we shouldn't diss our inaugural coach, but... I don't know about the club, but Crows fans in general really don't have a lot of love for the Cornes family :)

Now you're talking! :D

It will be the Phil Walsh medal one day when Koch head and KT are finished.

Sorry but it was a terrible decision by the PAFC.

Also it was the tragedy about the way he died and suddenness of it that broke and hurt both Clubs and also the entire AFL community.

He helped your Club achieve the ultimate success in 04 and he turned our Club around to what it is today. It was a shameful decision by the Power, I will never think otherwise.

Logically yes could call it the Cornes medal but Kane and Chad are such flogs that it’d make me throw up for their name to be associated with anything with the Crows.

Reckon the Phil Walsh medal is perfect.
