Have to feel sorry for Simpson and the team - they've been criticised all year for being flat track bullies who can only beat bottom of the ladder sides. Now they beat up on two sides in the eight and it doesn't mean anything because the other sides didn't come to play?

Aww yeah youre a glass half empty kind.

You thought the maybe Adelaide and Collywood looked crap because thats the way made them look?

I don't mean to be overly negative or critisise Simpson or the team. It was a great performance, they fought hard and played good solid 4 quarters of football. All I am saying is that the opposition played about as well as the likes of teams in the bottom 6. It's not there fault, I don't begrudge them that, we have to play who is in front of us etc...

But at the end of the day our issues under pressure have not been tested and we looked better than what we actually are IMO.

I agree with this sentiment, but it always a good talking point.

Did we beat Collingwood and Adelaide because we legitimately beat them and we made them look crap, or were they simply crap?

I am in the former camp, simply because Collingwood beat Port the week before and they played pretty well. I know that form can fluctuate, but not to the tune of 60 points!

World of difference between what we've dished up in the past 2 weeks vs say the North game. We're running and moving the ball quicker, it's great to see.

We really have only been belted by two sides. North and Geelong iirc.
That is real improvement on last years results.

Really, had we played 10% better all season and kicked straighter we very well could have been looking at top 4 at this point of the season. There has been a lot of doom and gloom around these forums throughout the year, a lot of it justified at times, but really, I don't think we're as far off the pace as some think.

Absolutely ^ I think there's been plenty of positives this year, especially under a new coach. How many games did we dominate possession and didn't put it on the scoreboard? The biggest disappointment this year is that we couldn't convert during the early stages when we had a relatively easy run and a fit list. Those missed shots at goal are momentum killers. On the other side, it's been great to see the shackles being thrown off in the last couple of weeks and seeing the boys go up the guts and take the game on. The intensity and numbers around the ball have been exceptional in the last couple of weeks. We saw it in pieces early in the season (eg: Collingwood at the G). Hopefully there is a bit of belief in the group that on their day they can beat anyone. I remember when it clicked for our last premiership group in 2004/2005- guys like Hunter, Embley, Waters, Cox, Glass finally believing they belonged (Hunter's hit on Lloyd in that final for me signalled the return of the swagger and snarl of the 90's eagles teams).

Looking at our results from a historical perspective, it's not been a bad year. If we do happen to finish off with 2-3 wins, it could be a pretty solid platform to launch ourselves into that 4-6 position and start making some inroads in the finals from 2015. I think we're in the 2003-2004 zone at the moment, and it doesn't take too much more to go from being around the bottom of the 8 to being a contender. Perhaps a midfielder or two to take it by the balls (I'm looking at Shuey and Gaff...). 2014 shows where we are at....and projections for 3 wins, 2wins or 1 win from the remaining 3 games. Numbers in the boxes are where we finished in those years. At worst, we've levelled from last year.

are u one of them poindexters who sits at the back of da coaches box on computers?

Well we've now won the same number of games as last year and with 3 rounds to go should win at least one more game to exceed last years tally. Our current % of 111.8 is also much better than last years 95% thanks mainly to a much improved defence (conceding nearly 20ppg on average less than last year)

Simpson should be reasonably satisfied after his first year in charge but there's still a heap of work to do before we are contending again

I'm actually annoyed that Adelaide and Collingwood (in particular) trotted out such average efforts

It would have been nice to get some wins against an opposition playing half decent footy - they were both bloody flat IMO

All of those guys bar Leppitsch have been in the job longer than Simpson. And Brisbane were a basket case earlier in the year.
Yes but they had immediate impact. Both Sanderson and Hinkley improved their teams in their first year. I can't remember exactly but I think both took their clubs back into the 8?
