This is not spoken about enough. WA teams need to push AFL to consider this in fixturing. No Tas games. All interstate trips are playing two games on six day break. Timing of interstate matches to allow best rehab (not sure if this means fly back same or next day). Etc.

Pavlich (350 games) 860K kms; Kade Simpson (340) 120K kms. Ridiculous to think it doesn’t have an effect.

Agreed.

A long time ago it should have been put in place that matches following greater than 3 hours of return travel for the away team need to occur on a minimum 7 day break if the match is an afternoon fixture or an 8 day break if it is a night fixture.

The other component that needs consideration is travelling west to east across timezones has a much greater negative impact upon the body than travel east to west or within the same the same timezone.

Can recall seeing somewhere that there is a significant correlation for non-WA clubs having reduced performance in the immediate week after the return from Perth (i.e. travel west to east). An article perhaps for some further investigation in its own right in the future.

Liam Ryan looking very sore on crutches.
He’s just come back to sign some autographs for the array of kids here A93755C3-4BA6-4024-B7D8-7F713E14BB5D.jpeg

More to the point, what shirt are you wearing, can the players hear it from on the field?

Bailey Williams is walking laps and doing handball drills with NN; one of the academy blokes (Baker?), Chesser, Shuey and Dom Sheed (I think, unless we have another balding dude that isn’t Shannon Hurn).

Basically, I give him next to 0% chance of playing this weekend. Nor Jamieson. As I’ve said last time I was here, normal training isn’t exactly strenuous.
Speaking of Hurn, he drew a huge crowd with the little ones.

Shuey’s just come over and he’s wearing rehab blues, so wouldn’t expect him to play this week (but I didn’t think Yeo would either). He’s not doing a lot but he’s smiling and getting around the groups

Are people buying the bad luck story again?
Not me, other afl clubs have moved onto the new school of physiotherapy. We are still stuck in the past. Clubs like Brisbane and Hawthorn that have got perma injured guys out on the park vs us.

I count only 20 players actually out there inc Darling and Ginbey who are still signing every autograph, as Shuey and Hurn did. Darling is smiling and extremely patient talking to everyone who wants to chat.

Ginbey has just finished signing and has run off the ground.

They tried get a number of ruckmen to the club but were unsuccessful. The club made comments about this after the trade period was over. Can't put a gun to players' heads and force them to move.

If Yeo's body is shot, who would take him? At his age, I can't really see him wanting to move. The mistake was putting him in the middle, instead of leaving him in the backline.

Having said that, we still don't know the extent of the injury and the scans themselves may simply be precautionary. Simmo simply said he was 'sore', so they really have no idea until he scans come back. No point melting over it until the news is announced.
They are going to need a mature body ruck to shoulder the load, otherwise they'll blow up Williams and the Waterman and then might be tempted to blow up Oscar.
Even getting someone like Scott Jones in the MSD to carry the load for the rest of 2023, then be a good WAFL player.

Yeah but maybe they need to change up the routine. American athletes like NBA and MLB players travel all the time. I know its not the same contact sports but we might be able to learn something from them. Plus we have charter planes now, the flights should be a bit more flexible if we need to go through a recovery process beforehand.

If we are struggling with recovery compared to other teams we need to find ways around it.
Yep... I always think of American pro athletes whenever Eagles fans or players talk about their demanding travel schedule and the effect it has with injuries and how it stunts their longevity as players. American sportsmen play way more games and spend way more flying time each year. The top players in all their leagues don't seem to have any issues playing well into their late 30's, sometimes even into their 40's.

A better example than NBA and MLB would be the NHL players who suffer similar wear & tear to AFL players.
Not counting playoffs, they play 41 away games a year (quite often playing 2-3 in 'road' games in quick succession.
On average they would have 50 flights and about 65,000 km distance travelled. This is way more than the West Coast & Fremantle players.

You never hear the US sportsmen complain about it or use it as an excuse for their careers being cut short.

It's just accepted as part of the job.

Yeah ahh I'm fairly certain when you can play 2 games in the one day (MLB) or a few games in them same week (NBA) it's no where near as physically taxing as AFL. Sorry guys.

Is that a cause for concern ? Isn’t that the physio Mark Finucane
Yeah I’m not sure to be honest - didn’t look like he did too much else.

Also, Darling basically only came out to sign stuff - but he didn’t train at all last time I was here either. We know he has a niggle so no concern in that.

We also know Ginbey is being managed.

Players move around so much that you would rarely get an example of a player copping a greater-than-average travel burden than his peers over the course of a career. He might cop it for a couple of years when he plays for Vancouver, then sign with a New York side and have a much easier ride for a while.

Compare that with guys like Mundy, Pavlich, Hurn, Shuey, Gaff, Darling who spend their whole careers with a WA side and so fly cross-country and back 10+ times a year for more than a decade. Maybe they’re not flying as far as the average NHL player but they’re flying a hell of a lot more than the equivalent players at Collingwood and Richmond.

How many games a year do NFL players play?
How long do running backs and tight ends careers last?

There's your closest possible comparison. Also remember the players entering the league already come into it are more physically developed and older than players drafted into the AFL.

The entire system is ****ed and as a club we get shafted by travel harder than any other team in the league. It is why we have to build from the draft, bring a core group through all at the same time and a similar age bracket and get lucky to win 1 grand final. The fact the club has built through the draft successfully 3 times is a ****ing miracle.

The more professional the league has become combined with the 'fixture' and the implementation of the soft cap on footy department spending has crippled the club and the players.
