Official injury list (10) released 20/8

Season (10) :
• Noah Long (Knee)
• Elijah Hewett (Foot)
• Tyler Brockman (Ankle)
• Callum Jamieson (Ankle/Knee)
• Dom Sheed (Foot/Hamstring)
• Luke Edwards (Concussion)
• Josh Rotham (Abdominal)
• Tom Barrass (Back/Hamstring) - Was 1-2 weeks
• Jeremy McGovern (Thumb) - New
• Jamaine Jones (Concussion) - New

It’s the last game of the season so all players are now listed as out for the season

Chesser and Burgiel have both been removed from the list after recovering from their respective injuries

Andrew Gaff has retired and won’t be available to play

The biggest issue that has impacted Oscar Allen has been the lack of foresight in playing him in the ruck way too early. Have we not learnt from what happened with Josh Frazer? I suspect little if any of Oscar's injury is due to Optus.

What a surprise that in 2019 we had an undersized KPF who thrown into rucking duties in his second years and is now suffering from stress injuries in his body!!!

The temptation will be to throw Barnett into the ruck and move Williams to the KPF role. Is Harry ready? If not, just put up with Jamieson as our main ruck and and if need we play Jack Williams as the second ruck. Less worried about Jack as I doubt he will make it long term. It will be tempting to get a WAFL battering ram mid year if Flynn is lagging in recovery..

Aaron Cadman and Jacob van Rooyen both played minutes in Ruck last year and this year as undersized KPF and no one’s jumping up and down over it.

For Oscar it was either play forward with some time in the ruck or play WAFL/scrimmage games. That’s the role we had available and needed filled at the time.

I don’t think his injuries are down to playing ruck. I can’t see how playing ruck would give you a stress fracture in your foot (2022) and his shoulder in 2021 was from landing on it in a marking contest against Bulldogs in round 2.

For me I think it’s far more to do with his style of play. He throws himself around in marking contests. How often do we see him in a marking contest and then clutching at something on the ground, either a knee or an ankle or a shoulder.

Oscar is a centre half forward, not a full forward and I don’t think him playing close to goals and being double teamed is good for either his body or his football.

With Darren Burgess?
Yeah just train outside Crows training and copy everything he says.

I don't know how much 1 fitness guy can make a difference? Like surely people have pinched ideas off him and have some idea.

Not like he's some magic man

Happy for you to have a different view - I am firmly in the school that undersized KPF should not be rucking in their development years.

Happy for you to bookmark your comment and come back in 3 years to see how JvR and Cadman go assuming they are given sustained runs in the ruck.

Just for the record, Cadman has recorded 1 hit out in the last 2 seasons. Hardly what I would call being thrown in the ruck.

In the games I saw Van Rooyen play, he was rucking the thrown ins when deep inside the forward line and very little ruck at CB or around the ground. Gawn has TOG over 80% while NicNat was TOG around 56%. A big difference from an odd throw in compared to significant minutes.

Oh and I was not alone in disliking this move. And Oscar was keen to play and would have played anywhere in 2019. Admirable trait but one that I firmly believe has cost him dearly.

What I don’t understand is how does playing ruck correlate to his injuries?

How does playing ruck cause a stress fracture in his foot? And he hurt his shoulder in 2021 in a marking contest while playing forward.

It’s reaching to blame Oscar’s injuries to his time in ruck.

Oscar has an issue where he is too kind to the opposition. He doesn't go hard enough at the pack or opposition under the ball with his knee and body and it leads to some pretty rough landings.

Always protect yourself first.

BBW vs that Port bloke who got crunched is the first time in a long time I can recall one of our bigs making the opposition earn it. Loved it - hard but fair footy that we have gone so far away from that most of our blokes look lost and bewildered out there the bulk of the game.

You don't understand with a guy who has yet to develop the core strength required to play ruck yet has to collide hard with an opponent 105 to 115 kg multiple times a game is going to cause stress and damage to a 19/20 year old!!!! This is going to be a long discussion that I fear will be met emotionally from you and not with evidence or facts.

How does jumping some 1 metre of so up in the air and colliding with a force from the other direction and then land on a centre area not put additional stress on ankles, feet and knees? How would a young ruck go moving fridges? NicNat on numerous times stated that attending boundary throw ins and jostling for position were like spending time moving fridges. I am sure that has anything to do with his shoulder weaknesses!!!

There was a load of debate about the Josh Frazer when he was forever injured in the early 2000's and retired early. The Pies admitted their ruck stocks where low when they drafted him and that they got him rucking at senior level before his body was ready.

Wake up and look at the evidence. There were a bunch of posters not happy we were rucking him. And many of those were and have been involved in football development. About 4 years ago, Bond 007 was asked about using Barrass in the ruck to which he responded with something like "you don't put a Rolls Royce in a demolition derby!"

But stay firm to your views, rucking 19 and 20 year olds who are not physically ready is fine and had nothing to do with his state of body since 2019/2020. It must just be Optus

I think it’s a convenient excuse mostly tbqh.

If he had done an McL or PCL which are classic injuries for a ruckman I’d agree with you.

Oscars had 2 concussions, a shoulder injury (2021) , and elbow injury (2021) which are all related to his contested marking and hitting the ground after a marking contest.

All happened on the ground -while not playing in the ruck, but in other positions and he also had a stress fracture in his foot, something players of all roles, shapes and sizes get (Dom Sheed!!!).

"Oscar’s had a really good pre-season. He had a bit of knee soreness last week, so we took the opportunity to rest him and we expect him to train next week and be ready for round one,” High Performance Manager Mathew Inness told westcoasteagles.com.au.

... with dynamic second-year player Elijah Hewett making strong progress from sesamoiditis. Elijah is back out there running. He’s feeling really good. He’s pain-free for the first time in about two years, which is great news,” Inness said.

A shiny gold star for the first journalist who sits down next to a West Coast executive and asks them the really really obvious question arising from the above.

Why does the club keep clearing people to play or train only for it to be made abundantly clear a few days or weeks later they were not remotely right to play or train?

LoL High performance manager

Anyway... Get them their surgeries and hope we'll see them a few weeks after the mid season bye.

TBH In my head I wasn't expecting to see Hewett this year anyway.

Wait til Flyin re aggravates his hammy in a week or so.

“Still got a fair few boxes to tick before he comes back to play, so we’ll have a better idea of a timeframe in the next couple of weeks when he progresses.”

So he hasn’t progressed and 2 weeks later they have a better idea probably after he wasn’t able to increase his training loads

Apart from the fact it’s not the news we hoped for, I don’t see the issue in what was said

Surgery was always a possibility as a last resort if rest didn’t work

It was always going to be how his foot responded when they started to increase his loads again.

Exact same thing happened with Callaghan at Giants.

It might mean we don’t see a lot of Hewett this year.

Sad that you have to explain it, but anyway.

Disappointing news re Elijah :( Really hoping that this will resolve the problem.

I did not realise Callaghan had the same injury. Fingers crossed that Elijah’s outcome will be of a similar nature and he can develop into the player we are all hoped (and expected) him to be 👍
