Official injury list (10) released 20/8

Season (10) :
• Noah Long (Knee)
• Elijah Hewett (Foot)
• Tyler Brockman (Ankle)
• Callum Jamieson (Ankle/Knee)
• Dom Sheed (Foot/Hamstring)
• Luke Edwards (Concussion)
• Josh Rotham (Abdominal)
• Tom Barrass (Back/Hamstring) - Was 1-2 weeks
• Jeremy McGovern (Thumb) - New
• Jamaine Jones (Concussion) - New

It’s the last game of the season so all players are now listed as out for the season

Chesser and Burgiel have both been removed from the list after recovering from their respective injuries

Andrew Gaff has retired and won’t be available to play

I have to say it was a pretty low rent act by Darling regardless of who he kneed. He didn't even "crash the pack" as such, he just ran in and threw a knee (I've watched the replay a bunch and it was a deliberate kneeing action) and then failed to impact the play at all.

If he'd hit the Swans player they would have every right to be ropable and call it a dog act imo.

Our senior players are masters of getting it completely wrong when they try and get physical.

I hope Ryan heals quick because he was playing a really solid game. Losing our young blokes to injury is a real bummer.

Clumsy AF, nothing sinister, just shows how out of form the bloke is, dropping uncontested marks, clueless he is about to destroy a teammate...

Yes was a clumsy act, lacking confidence . Maric is capable of replacing Darling sooner then later .
Archer Reid down the track also .
Darling has been a champion of the club, has had some very big games in good seasons but not many are as good as Carey , Pavlich or N Reiwoldt .

Maybe the rib injury to Maric isn’t as bad as first feared. Certainly seems like the concerns of a punctured lung might have been premature

We're due to have a better than perceived outcome from an injury. In fact we're so overdue for it I wouldn't be surprised if the cracked ribs realigned Marics torso and he now stands an inch taller than before the impact.

McGovern had his ribs broken by Jeremy Cameron’s knee in R14, 2022 and missed the rest of the season

Just as our injury list was getting down to something almost manageable

Gov didn’t just get a couple of cracked ribs, his entire rib cage was shattered.

Had to have surgery to get some kind of plate inserted and was in hospital for 3 days.

Maric was discharged and cleared to fly the same day.

Maric will be back as soon as his tolerance for the pain allows.

I’d say 4 weeks and he should be back in WAFL, no need to rush him back ala Steven May atm.

Training notes from splinters

Main takeaways

• Maric, as noted earlier, was on the training track but was moving gingerly as you’d expect. Did most/all of the non-contact session
• Luke Edwards ran laps at at a low tempo before the session started then participated in the session with the rest of the squad
• Burgiel running laps with Edwards pre-session but no mention of doing anything else.
• Brockman back training as he comes back from his concussion

Luke Edwards??? So uninspiring. But so safe and error free. One interesting dude in the team chemistry.

To be honest, Luke Edwards is the perfect person to play the dead fat side wing role.

Not a high draft pick, and not one of the “old guard”, just a bloke who is trying to get a game, who’ll probably never be a star, but could be serviceable.

It would be good if the media would provide a prognosis on Hewitt's sesamoiditis with both a worst and best case scenario within the spectrum of likely outcomes.

Having bones surgically removed from your foot (or feet) and then having a whole bunch of tendons re - attached sounds like a complicated operation that has a whole lot of scope to go wrong. From my cursory googling it sounds like even if it goes well it doesn't cure the problem, you still have to "manage" it for the rest of your life. I assume manage is a code word for rest and don't put strain on which is pretty hard to do if you want to play AFL.

He has only just had surgery so they have to let it settle and do further scans.

If Hewitt is likely to make an appearance in Round 16, is it even worth it?

I am not sure of the rules, but would it not be best to have him at LTI, give him clean air to recover in time, and also give us the benefit of getting another Pick 1 for the MSD?

Any games into Hewett this year is worth it.

Get him around the other blokes and part of the footy program. 8 games is worth its weight in gold, even if it is in the WAFL.

If we are reasonably healthy come MSD then it becomes about having a very hard conversation with Gaff.

He needs to play as much footy as possible.

Someone else will be done by the MSD anyway, nothing surer.

If he was due back in round 20 id still want to keep him available, alongside Reid I think he has the most upside of the youngsters and I want him to play as much as possible

Finn Callaghan had the same operation after also working with the same ballet physiotherapist initially

He seems to be doing just fine now

Gosh so many specialist feet problems these days .... never heard of this one .
Optus Stadium better be softer after six years to settle .
Hewett is very dynamic we need a player like him , maybe next year is okay .

Personally, I'd be happy for him to not be rushed back for 2 or 3 pointless games.

Long recovery then smash pre season

Not sure I agree with that. Missing a whole season of development at this stage isn’t great for him. Plus it gives him motivation for his rehab.
We shouldn’t rush him back but I wouldn’t take that motivation away from him just yet.

Yeah but the kid wants to play and it's important to have goals to work towards. Otherwise rehab becomes a lonely and dark place which isn't good for his long term development or injury management either. No doubt he would be feeling frustrated and isolated ATM, I don't think prolonging this to after the off-season is a good idea.

If he's no risk of further injury (sounds like to me everything they have done regarding Elijah so far has been conservative, so I'm assuming the given time frame is also in line with that) let him aim for the final 3rd of the season.
