When people ask "What do we need?" I'm reminded of a classic scene from Seinfeld, when he got bumped up to first class:

Air Hostess: More anything?

Seinfeld: More everything!

The problem with our list is 1) It's not bad enough that you would have a fire-sale in order to stack up on draft picks ala Fremantle, 2) It's not rated high enough that other teams would overpay for our players, and 3) It's certainly not at the stage where we would give away our first round draft pick for a ready made player in order to push for a premiership.

My personal theory is just to sit tight, get games into the players we have in order to raise their stocks, and then trade them when they have some currency. I mean, take a look at Chris Knights - people rated him as higher than he is worth on the trade table, purely because he comes from an Adelaide team that is grossy overrated.

It's for this reason that I hope we hang onto Salopek for at least another two years - because at the moment, he's neither potential or reality when it comes to the price we paid for him (a first round draft pick).

If the team is going to go anywhere somebody is going to have to step up. Sal at one point before his run of injuries was playing close to All Australian status. We need Boak to lift another cog, Pearce to tackle as much as he did last year, Hitchy to be one of the leagues most dangerous small forwards and we need to find one more dominant and pacy mid. There are a lot of ifs there but this is how we can rise from pretenders to contenders.

Our defence only lacks another Surjan type player while we just need one or two polished and nippy players in the middle. Not an easy task but not impossible. I wonder if that player exists in the SANFL.

Paul Popolau from Norwood, However Norward are pretty certain he will be snapped up in this years draft, to the extent where he has not been offered a contract for next year and was advised one would be on his front door moments after the draft if things don't go as expected.

Krakwhore leaving is going to hurt in the short term as he had Speed, Ability and his defensive game was growing, his ability to spot up targets exiting the back half of the ground was wonderful, but his brain fades often hurt us at critical times.

However I don't think we lack anything in defence, Surjan, Carlile and P.Stewart, Two nuggety Back pocketers who hate to be beaten and provide plenty of run and support, A premier young Full Back and P.Stewart adds alot of versatility with his ability to play on the taller and smaller players. Trengove is a competitor and has agression in spades, he posses this Aura that I have never seen from a 19 year old on the footy field, Is a massive lump of a lad and in three years is going to be the scariest thing on the footy field. Chaplin is a wonderful defender who works both ways. I know alot of people beg to differ, but Hartlet is a wonderful Half Back Flanker and is EXACTLY what this back 5 need until Pittard is mature enough to step up. Hartlet has played alot of Half Back at Westies from the Underage, Reserves and Leauge sides.

With Pittard in the wings, Meyer and :eek:Pettigrew:eek: for back up and Moore able to play down there I think we look ok down back.

I would like to eventually see Moore played on a Half Forward Flank and hopefuly develop into an Aaron Hamill type hardnut. His hands are wonderful, he is that slightly bigger body and he is a competitor.

So here we go ?2013/14?:
FB: Surjan, Carlile, P.Stewart
HB: Hartlet, Trengove, Chaplin
C: Pearce, Boak, Broadbent
HF: Moore, Schulz, Banner
FF: J.Westhoff, Butcher, Hitchcock
Fol: Lobbe, Thomas, Salopek
Int: Redden, Gray, Salter, B.Smith/J.Polec

Would love to land Lycett in this years draft, but our midfield needs one more *Star* midfielder. Even if Pittard was on the half back flank and Hartlet was in the middle I think we could Push out Salter for another Midfielder.

So you're saying we need Sal, Boak, Pearce to have consistent, injury free years :) Agreed ! If injury woes are distributed randomly by the footy gods maybe we'll get lucky next year and you can add Hammer & Gray to the regular playing well list, there's your 'dominant pacy mid' and some clowns interstate will be in for a ****ing shock if just that goes to plan. On Hitchy, a reasonable short term goal is just to keep getting a few goals and assists per game and avoid the infamous '2nd year blues' while building up to an actual adult body. If he can do that we've had a huge win considering he came from nowhere this year.

IMO Moore (or JMP later in the year) will be that 2nd Surjan type player.

But when you said 'polished' and 'SANFL', my thoughts turned to ... sewage :D.

Our first two picks are 16 and 34ish... going to have to pull one out of our ****s to get someone good to go on day 1 from there. Welcome back Nick Lower ? Who knows !

Sorry for intrusion, where is Jackson Trengove at? I think he is a great player but u have a surplus of 190cm plus defenders? He is exactly what carlton is screaming out for!

Do think think a swap of Trengove for Jacobs & Walker could be entertained or not?

Also im guessing Salopek is Vic and homesick? what type of player is he? whats he worth?

cheers

trengove is basically a cult hero at the club

to get him in a trade fans here would be demanding a massively lopsided trade in our favour.

Im sure you will get nothing but "trading trengove is NEVER an option"

sorry dude. We just love the kid and his aggressive old school approach to the game - phsyco is here to stay :)

Agree totally with what you say, but unfortunately we fans have exactly zero say in trade deals. Confident that the club has zero interest in trading him and would only consider it if JT wants to leave and we were offered ample compensation.

I really would love to see where JT is with contract negotiations, though. I'm confident he'll stay and repay the club for nursing him through injury, but the sooner we know the sooner we can breathe easier.

i'm sure trengove will be in the mentality of wanting to repay the club for his rehab and all, even if he isn't he will say that and play out his three year contract which would end at the end of next year i assume.

i don't know about a surplus of KP size defenders, we have over 190cm -

Salter - should and will hopefully play a more 'Paul Stewart on HFF' role, not a natural defender
Chad - his last season and a question mark over what his output will be
Carlile - gun, cemented KP
Pettigrew - question mark, 2011 he needs to cement a spot or at least play a dozen games to stay on the list, might play around HF if at all?
schulz - forward
chaplin - second cemented KP
butcher - forward
trengove - third cemented KP
westhoff - forward
lobbe - ruck
d stewart - forward
brogan - ruck
redden - forward/ruck

looking at it for my own thinking if hypothetically chad is injured/retired and trengove or carlile come out i'm not sure who'd take up full back, it would definitely be someone out of their element. if we continue our trends justin westhoff will be tried back there.

Trengove for Kruezer and Gibbs anyone? I'd still probably say no hahaha

IMO a midfield of Gray, Salopek, Hartlett, Boak, Pearce, and Kane as a stopper is first class. Thomas and Cassisi to rotate in to dominate the contested ball, and apply huge amounts of tackling pressure.

Anything could happen next year though. I can see us having a really, really strong side next year, lacking a bit of depth though. Who knows? Maybe we could have a sydney 05/06 like run with injuries and end up top 4? I'd say its definitely possible due to the likelyhood of the cats & the dogs falling out of the top 4, and possibly further.

EDIT: that said, we could lose schulz, gray, boak, and chaplin, and be in a lot of trouble.

About as much as Gibbs for Salopek and Salter.

Lurk3r

It's time to face the facts these boys are good on paper but in reality are average. I have been syaing for 3 years our midfield looks the good to deliver and hasn't.

It's annoy.

Plus you forgot Rodan.

Ohh don't trade Trengove for ANYTHING! evenm Kruzuer and Gibbs.

He has to become our next captain and Mr Port Adelaide if you ask me. He epitomises everything that Port is and should be on the field and if he becomes Captain, our players will have to walk tall IMO. Big call YES, good call F'in Oath!

i figured he was a bit of a cult hero but worth a thought? He would answer our prayers I would think at the blues, wouldnt surprise me if jacobs & walker were traded for a chb somewhere?

Id almost entertain gibbs for salopek & salter, but not quite!

Hows hamish hartlett faring? Seems to be following in his brothers footsteps a bit with those hammys! I think we had adam on our list 5 years and he would have done maybe 9-10 of them! worrying!

thanks boys & girls

See that's a reasonable suggestion Gibbs for those two

Collingwood, Geelong, St. Kilda, Hawthorn and Carlton beg to differ.

Only time will tell aye.

Either way, its what we've got. Theres no way we are going to be able to bring in a midfielder that is better than all of them, very unlikely that we would get one better than even a couple of them.

Its our forward and backlines that get me really excited though. But I'll try to stay on topic :p

It seems we won't be featuring heavily in trade week this year. I'd hope that someone tries to take some of our players, but I don't see it happening.

If Salopek leaves (which btw, i really don't think he will) we will aim for draft picks IMO. So probably get a first rounder, or maybe a 2nd rounder + a third rounder.

The first rounder + second rounder for Salopek + our first rounder sounds alright too. (assuming its a team below us on the ladder that gets him.)

Spot on Rick. He is fearless, has ability, aggression (controlled mongrel) and confidence (some would say arrogance) and I would not trade him along with Harlett for anyone.

Where's D Stewart?? IMO, he and Butcher will be our 2 pillars up front that we have been waiting for.

Not really. Tambling or Schammer as ins? Yes, midget midfielder is clearly a department in which we are lacking, where do we sign?
