Roast St Kilda in no mans land

I've got no doubt Ross Lyon was already lined up to be our new coach prior to Ratten's sacking so there was no point in us going through the charade of a process and interviewing other candidates as we would have just been wasting their time and everyone else's time for no reason.

I've got no problem with that as he is the best candidate out there and Carlton and Essendon may regret scaring him off by forcing him into a process.

Ross always coaches minnow teams and raises their profile.

Might be history repeating but I’m excited to see him back at the helm.

The Saints backline looks like the exact combination of dour, dependable footballers Ross loves.

He’d be giddy seeing so many average footballers he can mould to play his way.

Our backline was the best and most dependable part of our team this year, it's our midfield and forward line that needs the most work.

I don't think our list is as bad as some people make out though, it should at least be capable of playing finals.

They need to invest heavily in next years super draft and stop recruiting banged up mature aged players.
I would trade Max King next year for high draft picks. There's no point having a key forward with a faulty kicking style, it demoralises the team.

I'd rather we fixed Max King's kicking style than traded him for draft picks, he has all the other tools to be one of the best key forwards in the game.

Our old coaching set up couldn't fix it so hopefully our new coaching set up can do a better job of it.

What do mean stop? You are two draft periods late with your comment.
They already went for kids in last year's draft (Nasiah, Windhager and Owens), and have already committed to go for kids in this year's draft as well.

All clubs will take on some older players, but youth has from the last draft period been the main focus of list management at St Kilda.

Does not following a process in signing Lyon bother you?

What do you think a process actually tells you?
Ratten had a one year stint as assistant, which is probably the most rigorous process you could have.
In choosing a more inexperienced coach its certainly a good idea.
Saints used a rigorous process to select Watters, then a couple of years later grabbed the guy who had come out second in that process ( Richardson ).

Might be the process that is deficient, but they only tell you so much. What do you think we need to find out about Ross Lyon?

Not so much about Lyon - as you infer his track record is well known

It’s more about comparing him Lyon then with other potential candidates who you also talk to. And then landing on who you see as best which may well then be Lyon

While not near the levels it may have been if Essendon had allowed hird back. The Saints are nearly there by letting this bloke back after what he did to them first time around. Embarrassing.
Hird got done for systematic doping & putting young teenagers at risk of health issues. RTB had a contractual agreement with a PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATION & went to another club. But they are similar circumstances? You made me spit my coffee out haha.

The aints going back to the well to appoint Ross Lyon for some success 😂😂😂😂

I know right, last time he was coaching us you were the most embarrassing side in footy and we were up the top of the ladder. Better to roll the dice than keep shitting the bed year after year.

What like how most clubs decide who they want and put on a charade of having a bunch of guys come in and waste their time to give the impression of being process driven?

St Kilda didn't actually finish that badly under Ratten

Yes, they went from 8-3 to 11-11 and missing finals.

But the last game was a 14 point loss to an eventual Grand Finalist. In the 2nd last game, we outplayed a prelim finalist but couldn't kick straight, losing by 15.

Hardly a dire finish.

Point is, they aren't far off it

If St Kilda had a normal fixture we make finals in 2022

By normal fixture I mean a fixture almost every other team in the comp got

- DONT sell home game to neutral venue Cairns. Which we lost by 1 after kicking 4.18 and would win at Marvel (similar happened in 2021)

- Get a normal set of doubles. Eg another vs NM, WC, Adelaide etc instead of top teams. (We played doubles against both Grand finalists, 3 of the 4 prelim finalists and 4 of the top 6. After 2021 was almost as bad).

Win 2 more and we're 13-9 and 7th. Just with a fixture like other teams had

That suggests the list, currently, isn't too bad.

It's not a coincidence St Kilda made finals in 2020 when the fixture discrepancies faced in 2021 and 2022 were equalised.

However the list is already peaking. And there's a big gap between 7th-10th and a flag tilt.

Ryder is a big loss and it's a mature list, with most of the best 22 aged 26-28. King, Windhager and NWM will improve but that's only 3 players. Will there be enough improvement in this list, don't know

Really need to nail the draft again this year. Find another Windhager and another NWM. Then Lyon will have something to work with and hopefully there's improvements despite the mature age profile.

We did follow a process.

Trust me, this has been debated and discussed endlessly and the process isn’t exactly as I would have liked to see it but 10-20 hours worth of interviews, discussions, presentations, due dilligence and alignment on the football dept report and future direction is a process.

That’s… that’s not the Saints though is it. Saint Kilda is not the smoking hot “best going around”.
Does that always matter? Some coaches actually prefer to build their team from the ground up.
Bevo took over a team with no CEO, the captain had just walked out and half the list were in revolt. He won a flag two years later.
Fagan took over a struggling Brisbane side and they're poised for a flag tilt next year.

Yes you can do it that way. But headhunting is not unusual in many businesses, is not an invalid method of appointing someone.
