Roast St Kilda in no mans land

Geez I'd like to see your ladder predictor.

Or are you saying that the current ladder is what we judge by? That would be a fair comment later in the season, but it's a bit hard for us to beat clubs towards the top when we've already added an L to them.
No, I'm literally saying let's wait and see once they've played more than 3 games. You were top 4 after 10 rounds last season too.

Maybe one of those cases where copping some injuries kind of benefits a team by forcing them to play youth, whereas they might have continued with the same names if everyone had been fit and available.
I suspect this is absolutely correct. Caminiti isn’t playing is King and Hayes are and he’s proven to be very handy for a first year player. Windy and Owens would 100% be out there but likely in different capacities. Wood has stepped up as has Byrnes.

There is a critical mass though and after last night I think we might have hit it.

Best game I ve seen by Owens, and Wood wtf, where was this previously?

We were always going to play plenty of youth but there's definitely a couple like Caminiti that would never have gotten a run.

What it has done is helped us find other avenues to goal outside of King and Membrey.

Hopefully.our forward line will be better for it.

Ross Lyon is not a nice guy but he’s a bloody good coach and always has been. I have never bought into the nonsense about his style not being capable of winning flags. He’s a goal umpire howler in 2009 and an awkward bounce in 2010 away from being a 2 time premiership coach. Neither had anything to do with him sitting in the box.

I like Brett Ratten (who conversely is a very nice guy). But I think St Kilda made a bold and correct call

St Kilda seems to be covering every facet of the game.

Field positions very robust defensively. They seem to have the space of the ground covered and quickly make positions, so whenever the opponent gets the ball there's someone up the ground near their next target. But we have numbers around the ball too. They're contesting the ball while simultaneously defending the entire ground very well.

But still running forward when appropriate.

It's been incredible to watch. 4 quarter efforts aren't what Saints fans are used to seeing, even when winning.

Fitness a big part of it. Certain players look a lot leaner and more toned

Higgins
Windhager
Crouch
Howard

A few that come to mind.

The way we've steadied late and ran away after being challenged, 3 weeks straight and finishing strong. Suggests fitness a factor which won't last all year. But also suggests more robust structures.

Very impressive.

I wasn't as enamoured with us when we were winning with Ratten because the style of winning seemed more one dimensional and more reliant on big contributions from the talls, Ryder, Marshall and King. And the numbers definitely supported that, in terms of W/L with and without those guys and St Kilda getting wins when King kicked bags. And we got opened up too easily. And regularly had stretches- or entire games- where it looked like the team lacked effort.

Previously it was about winning the ball and slingshot forward. It often looked good. But when teams steadied and started controlling the tempo on their terms, we didn't have the slow-game structure and discipline to win. I was always doubtful whether we would stand up under finals pressure. It almost did in 2020 but they were shorter games. And Ryder was awesome that year.

This is totally different.

It's still early days, but every year there's teams who jump up the ladder, and sometimes unexpectedly contend for the premiership. Last year was Collingwood. Maybe this is St Kilda's year. The early signs are very very good.

We have finished 6th (5th after finals), 10th and 10th with horrific fixtures the last 2 years. Its not like we've been a bottom team. We haven't been that far off it and we've regularly beaten good teams.

I've always rated Lyon but I just figured it'd be too hard with 15 players on the injury list including King for an extended time.

But everyone is stepping up and playing to the plan. It's a "next man up" mentality with a wide range of contributors. Look at Byrnes last night- a huge opening 10 minutes. Mason Wood career best form. Owens has gone to a new level. Wilkie gets better each year. Phillopou and Caminiti don't look overawed in the slightest. Ross back to his best.

Structurally it feels more robust than early last year (and 2020) when we were winning. Great to see.

Mason Wood looked like a top 10 player in the comp last night, he was that dominant. And I’ve never rated him previously but I don’t watch St Kilda enough.

Saints fans - is he just having some insane purple patch or is this gonna be his long term output from now on?

Top of the ladder

It's getting dizzy up here in no mans land.
You will make finals and push for top four for sure. Ross is an elite coach and ratten was an absolute dud…

An AFL tactical landscape that has become about trying to strangle overlapping run and spread through the middle of the ground??? You are literally describing what Ross invented. The game is well in his court and comfort zone. He will thrive on this challenge and will go going after collingwood to try and pick them apart

I will put my hand up and admit I thought St Kilda had drafted rather poorly these past few seasons (aside from Windhager who is very impressive) but obviously I was wrong.

The buy into Ross the Boss so far has been remarkable. I am not sure given a long and gruelling season if the Saints current brilliant form is sustainable, but I see no reason why you can't be in the mix for a finals spot come the point end of the season.

I'll guess we'll know more in 10 weeks or so. Not sure how the 2016 flag is relevant...
The point is, they've been a consistently good team for almost a decade. And nearly everyone tipped them for the 8 again this year

They're not a "bottom 6 team" in anyone's mind except perhaps yours

And St Kilda just utterly dismantled them while missing 6 or 7 of the best 22.

We'll see.

What i thought was curious before this season got underway is that Lyon is generally considered a better coach then Ratten yet overwhelmingly most had the saints down near the bottom four.

Lyon is known for having good defensive teams and the saints were already strong in this area. Now it's elite at this early stage. A lot of the credit goes to Enright. Serious talent and i hope he stays for a while.

Forward line while decimated with the two key talls out still had plenty of talent. In some ways it's been a good thing is now we look for the best option, not just bomb it on Kings head at every opportunity. Unearthed another serious talent in Caminiti while showing everyone how good Owens is and can be by shouldering a lot of the forward pressure in the air and on the ground. He was drafted as a midfielder!

Midfield is no thrills and built off hard work and effort. Same as last year except now they appear a lot better drilled. I can see Lenny Hayes output here. The giants were gritty too when he was there.

Top four is a stretch but giving it a solid shake would be a great result regardless.
