The expert-with-hindsight phenomenon is fascinating.

No doubt many (possibly most) clubs would have made the same call (drafting Billings). And no one was jumping up and down at the time about what an outrageous selection he was at 3.

Sometimes the right call at the time simply doesn’t work out - half of everything is luck.

At times through out the year Billings was thought to be the the number one pick on draft boards and compared to playing like Dusty

You really are one of the worst examples of those ****wits with an unjustified superiority complex because you happened to pick a successful club to barrack for.
Odd comment on multiple fronts.

A question about who else to take results in the obvious answer of Bontempelli. A player BF scribe Knightmare ranked inside top 10.

Not sure how stating that another club may have done more research on him has anything to do with my club, nor how being successful is relevant when they were quite a few years of membership before we became successful.

But you do you.

Funniest is when it's also someone that was too scared to ever even have a crack at playing game themselves.

always amuses me that Billings and Saints get canned over Bont, yet Cripps went at 13 and never a peep at the other clubs who didn't draft him.

So many misses in that 1st round

Not having a crack it's all hindsight but geezus imagine the Saints with the Bont and Petracca in the 22

Exactly. I mean, look at GWS. They passed on Bont twice. Imagine how many flags that group could have won if they had Bont instead of the draft pick they got for Tom Boyd 12 months later.

The notion that someone can be the correct pick at the time but not correct long term will always be a hard one for Bigfooty to grasp.

Every club has made a call like that in their history and will make more of them in their future. That's just how the draft works.
I think it makes the call a bit more defensible in hindsight.

Billings/Bont is one that will always haunt us but at least we can say "at the time it was right" (ala Richard Tambling/Buddy).

Trac/Maccartin was just a **** up, we swung on that and whiffed. Reasoning of it doesnt matter to me, Trac should have gone 1, we made the wrong call.

Because we dont want to play Max Heath if Marshall gets injured.

Because the only other rucks on the list are always injured or haven’t played a game yet.
Surely he's not moving on to be a back up elsewhere though?

He has more of a chance of regaining the #1 spot at Port than he does at St Kilda.

Apparently it's as much to do with getting back to Victoria as it does with opportunity.

Plus given Marshall can play fwd and is one of the few rucks who has shown he can play with a ruck partner, maybe Soldo feels like there is a chance to play senior games.

If Marshall gets injured the Saints are stuffed, he can play with another ruck in the team another ruck is needed for multiple reasons.

Spot on, Billings over Bont was a call that possibly every club would have made, had they had pick 3 (Paul Roos has also said many times that had Melbourne not traded pick 2, that they not only would have taken Billings ahead of Bont, but that he was the guy they would have taken at 2, ahead of Josh Kelly).

But yeah, McCartin over Petracca was the disastrous call. A because Petracca just looked like he’d become the exact player he’s become, but B: because while Paddy had genuine football ability, there were just red flags everywhere there. His diabetes, his weight, his history of concussion.

Pick 8 compo for Josh Battle.

Talk about getting kissed on the d
