Many people speak as if the AFL players are alone in the workplace as far as drugs. Employers dont drug test but many AWA's have a drugs and alcohol clause if they are caught under the influence at work. And that's one strike.

Yes they do in certain jobs, ie: mining.

true, and its all speculation, but lets have a look at the litany of poor off-field behaviour and we cant help but draw conclusions, especially in the last 12 months, which leads me to believe ................

some of that is booze related as well - i.e q lynch

but all the off-field major dramas (criminal) has been 3 players - 1 of whom is no longer at the club

the other 2 are repeat offenders

I'd forgotten about Lynch

and yes one has left, but its the culture within the club, losing one element doesnt rid the club of the culture, given the recent disclosures, I'd say it is prevalent. The fact that the club had to suspend a gun player means that something is wrong if they cant curtail that activity.

I know i'll get shot down for this

but to me those docker's don't have a drug problem

they may take drugs - but they don't have an issue

they don't do stupid sh1t, it isn't hurting anyone and it doesn't affect their football

if they started acting like Cousins has - then they'd need to stay sober
I agree, but wiser heads would not line up in front of anyone else, how do they think these things get out?

I've said it before on BF.

A mate I play footy with that won a Colts premiership at my club with a current Docker, showed a dozen Freo players around London when they were over there for the exhibition match. He had been living there for a few years and knew some good spots and some good hookups. They were all back at the hotel later racking up lines of coke.

The difference is that these guys and probably a dozen from most clubs, don't get into so much trouble.

Exactly. Kerr should be careful with his brain cells, I don't think he was rich in that area to begin with.

Boat building

Luxury boat and hotel fitout manufacturers and installers.

The other half has had to undergo random drug testing for 5 years now. With 2 different employers.

And to top it off, you are sent the bill for it, and if you pass, the company reimburses the pathology costs, if you fail, well for starters it's instant dismissal and I guess you have to wear the test costs yourself.

I'm guessing they don't get two chances before they are out, unlike footballers & are probably paid a lot less as well.

I'm glad I work for myself, but even then, driving heavy machinery, you really got be careful to take into account what you did last weekend. I broke my leg twice in the space of 4 months, and you just dont know what will get disclosed.

So, either dont do it, or sit in the office

In fairness Mantis they probably won't end up with a 14 page spread in the Hun and with 30 odd reporters camped outside their house either.

They will probably also have some chance of re-entering the workforce in their chosen profession.

Even office staff for many mining companies are tested. Good enough for the people on site, good enough for everyone.

I have it on good authority that a prominent journalist will publish an article in one of the Sunday newspapers of more drug issues at an AFL club and anything between 6 and 9 players will be named.

The more this goes on the more the AFL's drug policy is a sham and the more both them and clubs could be accused of sweeping the problem under the carpet.

Stay tuned for more intersting revelations that could make the WCE problem look like a minor issue in comparison.

Read my post of yesterday, i stated that the Sunday Age has a story lined up for tomorrow.....

Good to see you read it!:thumbsu:

Because they aren't earning the money Cousins is & their jobs don't make them celebrity's, so don't get all the freebies that celebrity's do.

Also, if you get sacked from the mines because you have been using drugs, no way you will get another job in the mines.

oh on not WCE again is it???

Please say no I want to sleep next week! :(
To easy your troubled mind I shall say no, but you should not worry until there is more news on what players have been doing what.

Depends who you expect your footballers to be role models for. I expect that senior blokes at my club - Simmo, Arch, Boomer, Shagger, et al are leading the teenagers responsibly as effective surrogate parents.

We have a number of young blokes relocating to Melbourne in the last couple of years and I'm sure their parents would like to be assured that there is no drug culture leading their boys astray.

People talk about community problems and law of averages, but in my experience, if the 40 blokes you work with and socialise with frown upon drug use, then as an 18 year old, you are going to be much less likely to experiment.

fair point - but Shagga Grant probably isn't the best example. He got pinged $5K for lobbing up to training last year for being drunk (and it wasn't his first offence).

So is it the eagles or not, i dont get it. I hope its not us again i dont know how much more i can take..

To be perfectly honest I have no idea, I have only heard that there is a newspaper that was ready to name some players in their newspaper this weekend, some have said there were some former Eagles that were going to be named in the West Aussie, though I am not sure how correct this rumour will be we have to wait until Sundays paper hits the stands.

I feel that this news is not over that maybe someone from some other club could be named, hopefully it's all over, but I don't think it is.

Thanks for that..

So because they dont do stupid stuff its OK....Thats a bit like saying you should be able to drive drunk as long as you dont crash?
The other thing is if they using coke how long before it becomes a problem ie addicted and therefore useless for football and probaly not able to live a "normal" life
I get the impression from listening to cousins dad that Ben may struggle to play football again and therefore wasting a huge talent and paypacket for so little return and he only 28

no - it's like saying you'll only drink if you are confident you won't drive

if you are the sort of knob who drives when drunk - you either don't drink or don't take your car!

Packer's West Australian is only Monday to Saturday. We get Rupert's Sunday Times on the Sunday. Will probably be in the West on Monday.
