few quotes from the article

“It’s funny to say – we had a great feeling before the game,” Fox said.
“Everyone was calm and composed. It just wasn’t our day again. It’s a little bit raw, and I’m not 100 per cent sure what went wrong, but I think from two years ago, we’ve definitely had steps.
“I feel like we were a little bit more in it this time around. But to put ourselves in such a good position, finishing top, have the week off and getting back here, it does hurt just to not show up again.”

“I spoke to Isaac after the game, he was very devastated,” Fox said.
“I was like, ‘You’ve had such an amazing year, you helped get this team here.’ Throughout the finals series, we did a lot of work with Emma Murray. We were like, ‘One game won’t define us.’ This was four weeks ago and we just had this mentality.
“We would like to win a grand final, but it won’t define us. You always have to take those learnings, and hopefully, everyone believes that good things are coming. It wasn’t this year, but hopefully, it’s in the years to come.”

“It’s a tough one,” he said.
“We had such a good year to put ourselves in this position, and then it’s just that cherry on top. Getting back here again ... I don’t know. It’s a big ground, whether we have to cover it a bit better or win it at the contest? We know how they play. They like to chip the ball around and make us tired. The minute they start chipping the ball around and we don’t defend that, the pressure goes out the window and we’re chasing arse. And then it’s not a pressure game.
“Disappointing that we let ourselves down in the game. Credit to Brisbane, they played a really good brand of footy, and I think since round six have probably been the best team in the comp.”

I said during the season, it is a bit weird that we can have such a brilliant season and then because we don't win the final game it somehow ruins the whole season, but at the same time, having the idea that the game won't define them and therefore not putting everything into it isn't great.

And they wonder why we turned out another stinker.....

I actually agree that one game in the season shouldn't define success or failure. But like it or lump it, IT DOES. That is how the competition works. It isn't the EPL and never will be.

Until this mindset changes, we will just rinse and repeat.

I'd love to know what learnings they took from 2022... certainly zero were on display on Saturday.

Simply put - that attitude reflects a club that for too long has embraced 'almost getting there' as a great achievement. Its time to grow up as a club. We have all the parts in place to be a true powerhouse of the competition. Making the Grand Final 7 times in 25 years shows we are doing a lot right. But this sort of attitude needs to be consigned to the annuls of history. No longer should 'almost getting there' be seen as an achievement.

One game shouldn't define the club's season - of course not. But in the cruel world of professional sport, it often does. Embrace it, rise to the challenge. Not just settle for 'ah well, shit happens, we almost won the thing'. That is a cop out, and the reason why so many in the fan base are so angry at the capitulation on Saturday.

Yep.
What defines them is how well they turn up, win or lose. The win against GWS was old-school Swans, full of grit, albeit built on the effort of too few, but the GF was the exact opposite. When the team gives its all I'm proud to be a Swans fan, win or lose. Not this crap.

Sorry but that is really deep this group is completely broken its just a game of football not that complex they are thinking way way to much about failure before the ball is already bounced.

Good grief Fox That stuff should not of been made public.

"One game doesn't define us" is post-loss stuff, not pre-GF stuff. Need to find a hard edge from somewhere because that is some garbage internal messaging.

Its interesting to watch matthew lloyd in access all areas. whats interesting is that he shows vision where he pots ollie florent - which seems a bit harsh on him given that gulden just lets lohmann run past him and doesnt chase him at all

You gotta treat the GF like finding love.

Go in with your heart fully open, with your focus only on what could be, with reckless abandon and no thought of what could go wrong. Gamble everything for love as Ben Folds would say.

The risk is that you get devastatingly heartbroken, and then somehow have rebuild yourself afterwards. That sucks, but the alternative is being comfortably numb as Pink Floyd would say, and that’s nothingness. That is spitting in God’s face.

There should be no tomorrow heading into a Grand Final. It should be everything, until it either is or isn’t to be. Then you deal with it. If you are not brave enough for that, stop playing AFL.

I know it’s media speak, and sports psychologists probably say it can be scarring or what not, but saying you are “disappointed” after that loss is not enough. Bare your soul, say how much you are devastated, say how bad you wanted to be better than last time, say how much it kills you to have let down your club and your fans again - then rebuild together.

Maybe I am going too far, but it seems to me like the team’s mental approach after the result reeks of cowardice - the same cowardice that meant they were so fearful of underperforming and losing, that they felt too inhibited to win.

They are papering over cracks, and whether they like it or not, they need to come clean with their fans - because their stage fright exists because they know their fans are in the stands and watching on TV. We are the reason they exists. If they can’t be honest and brave with us, then they will never be able to move on.

If Premierships don't define them it is surprising that you walk into the headquarters and see all the premiership cups before anything else.

Why the hell are we in the league if we're not there to win premierships! All any fan wants to see is their team lifting the cup at the GF. If the Swans admin don't believe that, then they need to move on.

Actually need to get back to that defensive mind set again that a lot didn’t like horse
Even in the last few seasons, we succeeded being a high pressure team with good ball movement and a poor contested midfield.

But when you think about the GF lineup, I struggle to think of many high pressure style players. Usually Hayward in the forward line, Jordan as tagger and Rowbottom/Heeney/Grundy in the midfield.

Our wingers Gulden, Mcinerney, Lloyd and Florent can usually pressure with their pace. But they did not work hard defensively. Our forward line was very slow exacerbated by Papley/Logan having ankle issues.

So we are basically a side with good ball movement but a midfield poor at winning contested possession and minimal pressure around the ground.

Funny both he and Errol struggled to actually articulate lessons learned from 2022. At least Hayward said not to get bogged down in media commitments and ticketing requests, but would be more interested in learning what they took from on-field lessons, but maybe they don't want to reveal them.
I'm going out on a limb here, but I'd say they hadn't learned any on-field lessons.

A couple of quotes that give clues as to why we continue to fail in grand finals.

"Throughout the finals series, we did a lot of work with Emma Murray. We were like, ‘One game won’t define us.’ This was four weeks ago and we just had this mentality." Fox

As others have said, this is not the message you want to send your players into a grand final with. It's what you do to console your players after a loss, but you don't give them an out before the first bounce.

And this quote from longmire (bolded below):

Stand-in captain Dane Rampe pulled on the metaphorical gloves in the post-match presentation. “We’ve fallen short again, but I stand here beaming with pride that we put ourselves back in the ring, dusted ourselves off the canvas after ‘22, and we put ourselves in a position to keep swinging.”

Coach John Longmire took the cue and fought on minutes later in his post-match press conference: “You’d much rather get into the ring and have a swing than be standing outside looking in.”

Both messages condone mediocrity. And horses comment in particular was tone def. Your team effectively threw the towel in after round 3 of the heavyweight championship. They took 2 swings at the start of the fight then unsuccessfully attempted to block a few punches, then said stuff this, threw in the towel and said this fight wont define us. We threw a couple of punches. Hope you enjoyed the show. See you next year 😉

Horse & co stopped expecting our players to work both ways and started actively rewarding players who didn't.

Well, why didn't we take a swing!! We offered a chance for Brisbane to win and hoped they wouldn't.

taking a swing would be aggression and daring play. None of that was on display

This is correct nothing was learnt from 2022 infact i think we went backwards even further in some positions if such a thing was possible.

The media analyzing the game its quite incredible wtf were we doing out there?
