Do the players have a choice?

Isnt that the issue?

All well to say every team gives up a player but what if that player who is under contract doesnt want to move to Tasmania and forgo success for years?

This is what they should have been sorting out for the past two years.

The should have been negotiating with the AFLPA to get their agreement by offering players who are selected in an expansion draft a cash bonus.

Rumours Tassie are interested.

Does he stay or go?

This...

MCKERCHER TIPPED TO TURN BACK ON TASSIE

Tasmania’s biggest recruiting target Colby McKercher is likely to be off the table by the time the Devils come into the competition as he dedicates himself to football with North Melbourne.

Launceston boy McKercher would have been the perfect figurehead for the Devils given his style of play and status as a local star.

But those close to McKercher are aware he is unlikely to want to head home for the early seasons of the Tasmanian team, which is set to come into the competition for 2028.

Like many of the Tasmanian players who set their sights on the AFL he was keen to find himself at an established AFL club amid uncertainty about the future of Tasmania’s new side.

And while you can never say never, players like McKercher are understood to be keen to play their early years at their existing clubs in the early seasons of the Devils.

McKercher is a Launceston boy, not a Hobart local, and while the north-south divide is no impediment to recruiting Tasmanians he would not be returning to his hometown.

His manager Nick Gieschen said recently he was in no hurry to extend his contract talks.

But it would be a shock if he jumped ship even despite what are expected to be monster offers for Tasmanian players.

“Not really, to be honest. I’ve had brief chats with the clubs, there’s no rush,” Gieschen said.

“If you look at comparing it to an AFL player, say someone that’s got two and a half years to go on their contract it is early. Normally those talks start to happen 18 months out.

“I feel like the clubs are just comfortable with where all these guys are sitting. They’re all playing. I’m happy to start whenever the clubs want to start but for now I think everyone’s happy for them to keep playing footy.”

For the record, just in case people wants to run the narrative that after his current contract expires, he will get on the boat and go straight to tasmania...

His contract ends in 2026...Tasmania enters in...2028.

Woops, what's he gonna do? take a gap year? Extend contract by 1 year?

He might one day go back to tas when he's 32 like gibbs to adelaide...for two firsts.

After a huge year last year for the state with 2 top 10 picks and mid season #1 pick. What players are looking like being picked up this year? I haven’t heard of many being mentioned and scanned the combine list and only could spot 1, is this right?

I think having good talent from Tasmania could just about rescue some of these lower clubs with huge compensation being offered for them when the time comes. Someone like Mckercher or Sanders if they are top line players by then, the AFL will be so desperate to have a home made poster boy, they will shovel compensation and picks to the new franchise.

Richmond have the most younger Tasmanian players at the moment and maybe they have some inside word on this? Could save the club if they prosper and get huge packages for them for a trade.

It really depends on how Tassie is set up.

They will have picks 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 , 13 and 15.

AFL clubs will offer old players and fringe players for those 1st rounders.

I think one or 2 small changes will happen before the Tassie state team comes in.

I actually think free agency rules will change.

Instead of 8 years, I think it will go down to 6 years.

Tassie will get 2 or 3 or even 4 blokes aged 30 years old or over on 1 year deals as short term leaders too.

The other main question is the amount of kids they will pick and where they will come from?

Will they focus on getting lots of local Tassie kids, even if most of them are likely to be B grade or C grade players?

Or.... Follow a similar path to GWS ans Gold coast. Get a lot of Vic country kids that are talented but are traded of Vic sides 3 or 4 years down the track?

So there is a few ways on how the Tassie side can be set up.

Also any experienced players tassie gets has to be front loaded to reach the bare minimum of the salary cap.

The players salary cap is around 17 million dollars. So expect 1 million a year contracts thrown at players

Also... One of the Biggest issue Tassie is gonna have is trying to Fill up that Salary cap.

Gold coast found it easy to fill up their Salary cap in 2010. This was despite having 50 players on the list and 40 of them were younger kids aged 21 or under . AFL salary cap was $8.2 million. Suns were given $1 million extra so $9.2 million in total. That was easier back then as Suns got 8 to 10 AFL players from other clubs at $500,000 to $600,000 a year. So 5 or 6 million given to 10 blokes. Yes Ablett was on $1.5 million a year for 5 seasons.

The other 40 blokes were on 2 year deals at $100,000 a year. So After 2 seasons, Andrew Krakouer Left and Josh Fraser retired after the 2012 season ended. So that was 2 blokes on $500,000 a year gone and the Salary cap increased each season by $500,000 a year too.

So it was easy to retain those 2010 draftees on another 2 or 3 year deals at an extra $50,000 to $100,000 a year.

Jared Brennan, Nathan Bock and Campbell Brown all left and retired in 2013. So another experienced blokes on $500,000 to $600,000 a year. So thats another spare $1.5 million to $1.8 million for 2014 which was used to give to the younger players to retain them on the suns list.

As for GWS.... They did get Guys Like Phil Davis, Tom Scully and Callan ward on decent cash. Tom Scully was given 6 million over 6 seasons. It wasnt 1 million a year for 6 years. It was front loaded. 2 million dollars in year 1 in 2012 then $800,000 a year for years 2 in 2013 until year 6 in 2018.

If the AFL salary cap is gonna be around 18 to 20 million dollars in 2027, you wonder the money being paid to certain players.

West Coast and even to an extent Fremantle, were fortunate to have a large number of seasoned WAFL players to slot into their initial squads.

I wonder if Tasmania can find 6 or 7 players from their local leagues with experience.

Mckercher or Sanders will get offered unrefusable offers I think! It is a proud place an I think they will thrive on having a home grown talent. 1.5 million a year for multiple years.

The best free agent as well will get a huge offer, very similar.

good point. Tassie coming in the comp in 2028.

I am looking at the dockers for example. Alex Pearce is the dockers captain and he is from Tasmania. Turns 30 in june next year. He is out of contract in 2025. I have a gut feeling he will sign a 2 year extension until 2027. He will be 32 years old at the end of 2027.

Tassie comes in the comp in 2028. I can see Tassie getting Alex Pearce on a 1 or 2 year deal.

2027 and 2028 accounted for.

Does it get cut down to 3 VC players in 2029 and 1 VC player 2030?

I think they need mature bodies, so don't need lots of draft picks like GWS. Just every 5th pick or so.
I would guarantee them picks 1,6,11 at each of first two seasons.
For first year, every club gives up a player ( can protect 25 players).

Are VIC metro players too precious to move?
