Optus considering sponsorship with us over handling of Tex comments.
“The telco giant, who signed a four-year deal in early 2019 to become a principal partner of the club, on Tuesday issued a brief statement to The Age when asked about Walker’s racial slur of North Adelaide player Robbie Young

“As a diverse organisation, Optus does not condone racism or any form of discrimination. We’re consulting with the Adelaide Crows in regards to the management of this issue,” said Optus’ head of marketing Mel Hopkins”

sounds like the Optus response to the Age journo’s attempt at digging for dirt was a polite “mind your own business thanks, we can handle it without needing to talk to you about it..”

Agree some parts of the SA media have been a disgrace and have hung Tex out to dry. As a captain of a football club its hard to fathom what he did but through time and changing his behaviour for the better this can be a healer.

Given his contribution to the Crows he deserves the opportunity to set things right and the paparazzi should get off his back. I think it would be a mistake for both parties to part ways.
Front the media...no!
One on one interview with an indigenous and respected social commentator (not a sports journalist)...yes.
This format allows him to tell his story without him getting hijacked by the "circling vultures". It can be forthright but so long as he is given a reasonable opportunity to explain himself and to display his remorsefulness.
Another format might be a panel interview situation where several stakeholders are interviewed, once again, with the above mentioned interviewer. Possible panelists might include Robbie Young, Eddie Betts, one of Matthew Nicks/Tim Silvers, one of McAdam/Newchurch/Millera/Davis, Adam Goodes and a respected elder from a remote community.
This might sound tough for Tex and he would need to acknowledge his shame but I believe, in this environment, he will be able to not only display his remorsefulness, but he can begin to rebuild trust by proving he is committed to not just redeeming himself, but using himself as a high profile disgraced "white fella", to be a great example of the need for many (ordinary) non indigenous Australians to reconcile their latent beliefs.
If he can regain some respect from the panelists, it will mean they believe him when he says, "I want to be a better man".

I think I’d rather see him do the work first before talking about it. Otherwise it just appears like a man who got caught and is trying to talk his way out of it so he can play again.

You're possibly right. But getting on the front foot displays strong desire to make amends as quickly as possible. Not for his sake, but to begin the healing of the thousands and thousands of victims. If I was Tex, I wouldn't even raise football unless asked. It's about racism and nothing else.

the Age article covered them too;

“Toyota, Adelaide’s long-term major partner with whom the club has enjoyed a three-decade relationship, were also contacted for comment.”

obviously Toyota told the Age to mind their own business too because the age article doesnt even provide a response from Toyota..

and dont you just love reading this in an article;

“Sources familiar with the situation have indicated that at least some of Adelaide’s Indigenous playing cohort are fuming at Walker and questioned the manner in which he has handled the issue ever since it was revealed by The Age.”

”sources familiar”… **** me that is desperate attempt to add a heap of mayo to his article that was already based on utter BS..

Optus are in discussions about their sponsorship with Adelaide over the Crows’ handling of the Taylor Walker racism storm.

The telco giant, who signed a four-year deal in early 2019 to become a principal partner of the club, on Tuesday issued a brief statement to The Age when asked about Walker’s racial slur of North Adelaide player Robbie Young - for which the former captain was suspended for six matches and fined $20,000. Optus stopped short of endorsing the manner in which the incident had been treated.

I’m sure they are. When’s that contract up? End of next year?

******* journalists trying to start something, what is to be gained by going to club sponsors?

Clickbait

Are Optus just refusing to commit in case more information comes to light or do they know something we don’t know?

Contract is up soon

I really feel for Eddie. It must ****ing suck to learn that Taylor Walker of all people said something racist

Poor Eddie. We should be celebrating his incredible career, but sadly it seems every time he gets interviewed, it's in response to another incident involving racism.

I understand the historical oppression that Aboriginal people had to cope with.
It's a historical fact. But how that history effect people born today is debatable.
My ancestors were Armenian, and many of my family were murdered by the Turkish people during the Armenian genocide. It's a historical fact of my family, but it doesn't effect my life, nor do I hold a grudge against Turkish people now.
I’m not going to get drawn into a discussion about the impact on Aboriginal Australians, but it really isn’t “debatable”.

What I will do is ask you to use your imagination - Utilising the example you’ve given as relevant to your family.

Context is important here, so imagine you’re living in Armenia right now and hypothetically the country has been colonised and is now under Turkish rule, along with all the history that goes with it - Some of which you’ve mentioned. Now imagine you’re playing football, and a player of Turkish origin calls you something disparaging and specifically cites your Armenian heritage to do so. How would that make you feel?

Here is a reality of this whole mess. The comment wasn't heard by Robbie Young, wasn't heard by many people at all, and it did no damage. I'm not saying it was ok for him to say, but it was said and there was no hurt felt by Young, or the Aboriginal community anywhere. The actions of the club and the result of it going public has caused more hurt to Robbie and the Aboriginal community than it would have if the club dealt with it in house.
Like it or not, that isn’t the reality. It caused hurt to the club official who was offended by it just for starters. It would do further damage to perpetuate acceptance of racist behaviour by sweeping it under the rug, meaning the behaviour was more likely to occur again in the future and cause more hurt to more people.

The club and the official who reported the incident didn’t cause the hurt, Taylor Walker did when he made the comment. The process of breaking the cycle and making change is of course slow, difficult and painful.

Yep it would. His comment about Walker shows he will tackle his penalty at 110%. I wouldn’t be surprised that he donates more than his 20k fine.

The video is demeaning to both of them. Both are clearly forced into the situation - forced to act like a remorseful villain and a forgiving victim.

Its terrible. It perpetuates the notion that the victim is in some way responsible for healing the abuser so the abuser can move on. **** that shit. When Young put his hand on Tex's shoulder I nearly threw up.

It’s been really clear that Nicks, Eddie, Silvers etc. have all been saying ‘Taylor’. Seems like a very clear indication that mateships are over, no more nicknames. Tex was a mate, one of us; Taylor is a bloke we want to distance ourselves from as much as possible.

I came to a slightly different conclusion. Tex is a mate, a larrikin. Taylor is an adult. This is a serious situation, and cute nicknames aren't really appropriate.

Eddie Betts last night gave a very moving speech, but in it he said words to the effect… “I know Taylor Walker, and the kind of guy he is he will give 110% to get this right.“
