Teams you think will definitely not make the 8

Menzel is a better talent than Cripps. The one you really stuffed up is Lucas instead of Talia.

Richmond had Riewoldt and Vickery, two first round picks, so they didn't need to continue to draft talls. And Lennon was seen as best available and is seen as filling a need, which is the medium forward role. I doubt guys like McCarthy or Jaksch would make Richmond a better side above Lennon or Vlastuin, but they sure would help a side which many blues fans think will put it's CHB at CHF and use a 21 year old as their CHB.

How come Carlton list management is blasted but not GWS's?

Will wait and see what impact the interchange cap has on the manic pressure game style too. Could prove a lot harder to maintain for a whole match.

Do you recall how many rotations they had? I didn't think anyone got close to the cap outside of hot days.

I guess the Bombers and North ignore Daniher and McDonald who were free kicks via the F/S rule?:drunk:

I wouldn't say 'free', possibly discounted. Around pick 8 there were players of Salem, Freeman, Sheed, Lennon and Cripps variety, so there was still great talent around that pick.

My point was Carlton didn't go looking for Henderson, they tried to make the best of a bad situation and exchanged one KPP for another.

Because we were talking about Carlton? I agree that the giants' selection of McCarthy made no sense. I wouldn't be surprised if McCarthy was traded for picks.
yeah, that has been discussed, not known the reasons for this selection.
by the end of this season there will be a tradeAthon coming from this way.

I just don't think you're as good as other people might think you are.

For me, Sydney, Fremantle, Hawthorn, Geelong, Collingwood, Essendon, Richmond, North Melbourne and Carlton all have better shots at making the 8 than Adelaide and West Coast + Port Adelaide have about an equal chance. You've lost your captain Van Berlo for the best part of the season. Tex Walker is coming back from a serious injury and may take a while to click into gear. Thompson + Rutten + Reilly + Pods will all be 30+ and you would expect their output to start declining this year. And I personally don't think your depth is that great. But you do have a good draw which could go along way to helping you get a finals spot.

But hey, there are a few young guns on Adelaide's list - Grigg, Crouch, Sloane, Dangerfield, Talia - and the inclusion of Eddie Betts will be handy, so they and Adelaide could very well prove me wrong. I just have you guys behind a few other teams at the moment.
Is that really a huge loss for them though, talent wise? He's not far from being the Maxwell of Adelaide.

Fremantle had 146+ rotations in all games from Round 19 to the GF, with a couple up to 170.

Cap is only 120.

That is interesting, didn't realise they were up that high.

that was beauty of it .... we replaced essendon, defeated richmond and finished above collingwood ... how good was that !!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm sure it was great for Carlton supporters, but that has nothing to do with whether Carlton are good enough to make the finals this year without a charity handout from the AFL.

Carlton weren't good enough last year and it is hard to see where the improvement will come, no better than 9th to 12th for me, cant see the Bombers being stupid enough to repeat their previous indiscretions and allow you another undeserved finals berth.

Overall I think Carlton has a deeper and better list than Richmond. The only concern they have is if Daisy doesn't come up and if Judd misses more than the expected 2-3 rounds. Should these 2 important players play 18 games then they are a shoe in for top 8. Richmonds list has very little depth IMO.

It was like an M. Night Shamalamadingdong movie. It sucked balls, but the twist was worth it.

Where is this missing depth?

IIRC we were the lowest interchanging team I'm 2013 and we were still above 120, just.

It's a factor that I think will play a big role in 2014.

We averaged 124 for the season so I don't think it should be a massive issue for us, especially given the amount of interchanges were for Ziebell and Cunnington alone, I think those two will push forward a lot more this season instead of come off the ground as much.

Interesting the 3 lowest were eagles 123 while north and GC were on 124.

Carlton might have a slight edge in available depth players but I think really they are about equal and both teams will admit they are shorter on depth than they like. Richmond have deliberately countered that by filling their rookie list with replacement role players if needed.

But the difference between the lists is that Carlton are an older best 22 and therefore they have important players like Waite, Judd, Simpson and Carrazzo of which age has potential to cause injury. Plus Daisy with the concerns on his ankle.

Compare that to Richmond where Cotchin, Martin, Deledio, Riewoldt, Rance, Maric, Jackson, Grigg, Morris, Houli, Conca, Chaplin, Edwards, Ellis - the real core of the Tigers team - are at their peak or approaching it.

In that regard I'd say if all things are equal that Richmond's depth is less likely to get tested as much as Richmonds. The caveat is what Malthouse can do with some young talent in 2014. At Collingwood he played a bunch of gun kids but in 2013 didn't get much from Carlton's. Maybe Malthouse this year has big plans for Nick Graham, Menzel, Watson, Bootsma, Casboult, Docherty, Buckley and has fixed Yarran and Kane Lucas. Get big improvement from a lot of those guys and I think a lot of people (myself included) will change their opinion on where Carlton are heading.

Don't know what all this fuss is about St Kilda not making the finals next year. Expect the Saints to be in the top 4 this year and take the stick to some of the pretenders.
Serious posts only please

You meant to use the word hope.
Too hard to tell yet Clay, but I think the early rounds in particular will be interesting as clubs adjust.

Might even work in the favour of clubs who are forced to rotate much less than 2013, if their midfielders are resting forward effectively. Freo have some mids who I think could benefit, but at the cost of some of the manic pressure of last year.

I think Lyon said so himself, that Freo would aim to attack more at the cost of giving up a little more in defence.

I find it highly unlikely that a rotation limit will act as a leveller.

120 rotations are an enormous amount.
