The exacts as to how they see his role I am not privy to, however I do know that on our big board he was rated is the top 15.

The speculation and him being linked to us was in the unlikely situation that all the picks taken before our were mids / flankers and then would would just take the best player a available, and was touted that it would be a KPF.

I also don’t share the optimism that Oscar just fits seamlessly back into being a KPF.
History suggests a that his injury woes are are not going away.
He can play as a KPD and not having to turn as much as a defender might prolong his career.
But right now there are some serious questions marks over Oscars fitness going forward.

We can blame that on the absolutely ****en stupid decision to ruck him while he was still growing.
The AFL has many examples of young talented kids who never got the best out of their football careers because they were thrown into the most combative and body gruelling position in the game - ruck, too early.

Both Matthew Kreuzer ( Carlton ) and Josh Fraser ( Collingwood), suffered career long injuries that they got by being thrown into the ruck way too early.

I digress.

So in light of my concerns for Oscars longevity and fitness in the game I would be fine with taking another quality KPP.

Now without being too disrespectful to Jamieson and Barnett, right at the moment both look like being busts.

Bazzo I hold some hope that he becomes a quality third tall in defence.

So that’s a bit of my take on the situation.
100% agree with the sentiment about Allen being rucked too early, ruining his body.

I mean as a entirety of the last 10 years as opposed to just last year

Crazy to think these nimrods think we have re invented the wheel after 1 draft. Its going to take them 5+ years to realise the wheels have changed
Over the last 10 years we've drafted 31 WA players and 38 Interstate players...

So yeah it's a pretty good balance and proof that we don't just select WA players only.

That's not how it works, what you say would be true if we were recruiting Brander each year expecting him to suddenly be good.

But what we're doing is recruiting different players to a similar position in the hope that one or two will be good.

By your logic because Brander was a bust we should never draft a KPF again because they will always be busts...
Look I don’t know the inner details of the Brander situation. But I could see that it was and must have been frustrating for him with Kennedy, Darling, Allen even others in front of him for his natural position.

Consequently they tried to play him in an unnatural position for him and it didn’t work.

Stacking up too many players in the same position leads to frustration and failure. WCE are obsessed with tall players but they only form 1/3 or less of a team.

To me the Whitlock's seem to be more of the King brothers make up than the De Konning boys who have been able to bulk up quite a bit and are a bit harder to push around.
Shanahan for this reason for me, if we are looking at a future quality KPF/D.
Davis, Boxshall, Urquhart and a host of others still around so a few of them will still fall to our next pick.
All goes well we could walk away from this draft very surprised and very happy.

Last year we recruited 1 WA player from 6 recruits.

Year before we recruited 2 WA players from 6 recruits.

Stop using... checks notes ...facts to argue against people.

Of note, we've also had plenty of first picks that weren't Western Australian (Judd, Chesser, Gaff, Brander etc). Heck, you only have look at bloody last year FFS.

The foundation for a lot of our success, and in fact most premiership teams is having the best key fwd/def pillars in the league.

You need to select multiple players in the hope that a few succeed. Can we really see all of AReid, JWilliams, HEdwards, Bazzo and Jamieson making it?

With Darling, Barrass and soon to be McGovern leaving we need talls to replace them and they need to be quality.

Adding Shanahan just gives us another chance to find that replacement and as others have mentioned it's very common to have a junior key fwd become an elite defender at AFL level.

Tigers will find another club willing to give up a future top 5 pick to move 10 places up the order in the second round for a KPP they have fallen in love with overnight based on events to date...

Key position players are the hardest to get right (KPF, KPD, ruck). This is long proven.

They also take the longest to develop, on average. This is also long proven.

Planning for life after Oscar/Snake is prudent. If a KPF is best available at 30 (ie Shanahan) - take it. It means that - hopefully - the 18 year old KPF has filled out and is ready for AFL level when our current KPFs are on the decline.

I will be unhappy if we draft Shannahan or Whitlock.

As KPFs they would get in the queue behind AReid and even BWilliams and Livingstone.

What is the point of having 5 or 6 blokes for two positions? Would just lead to frustration by those at the end of the line.

Insanity/stupidity is doing the same thing that doesn’t work more than once.
A reid maybe a keyD.
Livingstone is a project.
B Williams forward craft is ordinary at best.
J Williams as a 3rd tall/ruck only.
mcgovern nearly done.
Barrass gone
H Edwards still developing?

We need another tall. Take the most talented.

Dons apparently making a charge for Richmonds pick to get Shanahan.

Essendons F1 and 37 mentioned. Would have to be a 3rd team involved or something else but Richmond don’t have much
