Big sliding doors moment for Clancy yesterday, if Sydney match the bid for Cochran as everyone expected then Pies take Dennis instead. I 100% hope we’re talking about how getting him on board but we will 100% take Champion as a rookie one way or another. Still think we should have moved Rawlinson on with the strength of this draft.

Tell Sheed to retire then sign him up for the beagles. He’s not going to fit in at all with the new game plan & if he comes good from his foot injury he’s still contributing to the club at the beagles. Could always then pick him up in the mid season draft if he’s going well.

Can’t help but feel we still need a mature aged plug and play key defender on our list. As great as it is to have young developing talls, it would be tough on them if Gov or Edwards go down.

I was keen on signing Sellwood with our last list spot but the sensible option would be a key defender. Unless of course Sheed retires and then we can get both.
If running a combo of Bazzo/Ginbey/Maric back there they might try and wing in for a period given their size.

I think Dom will view that as an unattractive proposition, he’d also be relying on someone going into the LTI list for a MSD spot to open.

Can't fathom us bringing him back into the list after that.
Presuming we still pay him out for his last season(?), it won't be any different to him being on the AFL list and spending the whole season in the WAFL.
If he's a team man and realistic about his place in the team (and with no interest from other AFL teams), then it wouldn't be a crazy decision for him.
Help out the young players for a year, then retire/return to Subiaco.

Duane Massey said in the interview on the club website that we’d be adding Malakai to the rookie list today

Didn’t specify if that was Cat B or not - my understanding is it needs to be as a Cat A rookie but I’m not confident that’s correct. It doesn’t really matter though in the overall scheme of things - either he or Dewar will be a Cat B, the other will be Cat A

It leaves us with one list spot which the club has said predraft we intend to leave open to assess players as a train on option. At the moment Burgiel is training with the club but we may look at others as yet unnamed. It’s probably his spot to lose but he needs to put in the work to convince McQualter he can play his game style

We will end up with 37 main, 5 rookie and 2 Cat B players in our list once we make our SSP selection meaning Maric (or one of the other rookies) can be elevated to the main list at any point. There’s no actual advantage in doing that though as rookies base payments are exempt from the salary cap

The other potential way to add a player is Sheed retiring if his foot/ankle doesn’t come good following his latest surgery. Then we can add another SSP signing or use the MSD depending on the timing of his retirement should that happen

That draft was a win.

Not sure how we did it but we turned 12&26 and a bunch of junk picks into a very good draft haul. Even managed our obligatory no name selection.
I was happy to come away with the players we did and It’s nice to see some optimism.

Goin to be interesting to see what happens with our plethora of tall forwards. Both AReid and Shanahan look quality plus Jilliams who showed promising signs last year.

I suspect Jamieson is also one more injury away from getting a tap on the shoulder, so he may be another avenue to a MSD spot opening up.

Giving up our F3 still hurts a bit given that we didn't even get the player we wanted (according to Phil).

We can always ask him. Guess he can just for on the LTI if his injury isn’t getting anyway better. For once I agree with you and think we need that extra list spot. We shouldn’t have kept Rawlinson

Yeah but we still have a F3 tied to the Hawks.

Which goes alongside 2xF1, 2xF2.

Pretty bloody happy with our future pick stocks all things considered. To get in the talent we have this year while retaining most of our 2026 picks is a huge win.

Especially when next year projects to be higher top end talent, but less depth.

Clarke is list manager only.

Massey, Clarke, Mcqualter, Pearce report to Bell who reports to Pyke who along with Worsfold reports to the board.

Oh and as of a little while ago I report to nobody and am sipping red wine waiting for an early flight.
What offers came for Shanahan? For the record I'm glad we took him, too good to pass up.

If St Kilda didn’t cut our lunch, we’d have Boxshall on our list instead of Davis. I don’t think there’s a big difference although time will tell

The way this draft panned out confirms what many (including the more knowledgeable posters here) were saying predraft that it had great depth and was very even

It explains why some players were selected earlier then expected whilst others slid - the gap between players was small and clubs obviously had quite different draft boards. For now, that seems to have worked in our favour to land 3 players significantly later than their anticipated landing spot

Does anyone know whether we gave up our F3 in the pick trade, or was it Hawthorn’s?
It was ours but it doesn't really matter that much. Lions had plenty of suitors for those picks and we did get the lowest they were offering.

Our future 3rd will be around the 40's next year and will have bugger all value on the points index so it's still a good bit of business bringing it into this years draft allowing us another selection. Some will say it was wasted on the unknown in Greco but if we'd taken Davis there no one would have blinked an eye so all's well that ends well is how i see it.

Can we bring on Denis as SSP if he goes undrafted in the rookie draft? To fight for the spot with Burgiel?

For those that don’t know much about Grego, he’s a midfielder that played for the Jets. At State level got squeezed out to the half back flank where he had a really solid championships.

At Coates level he was a hard at it midfielder (averaging around 24 disposals a game) that loves the contest and rarely loses a one on one. Question marks over his kicking and at times he try’s to bite off more than he can chew. He will need to keep it simple at AFL level and play to his strengths.

A little surprised by the pick but I think it’s a pick that probably suits a new style of footy we may be intending to play.

Champion goes onto our list today, whether Cat B or A I guess it doesn't really matter.

Leaves us the one SSP spot for trains ons, reported names are:

Burgiel - the incumbent, who has loads of talent and speed but also injuries. Needs to have a huge pre season to nail that spot.
Michael Selwood (Peel) - 21 year old defender with apparent great foot skills.

Olli Hotton - talented mid/half forward with great skills. Delisted from Saints due to injuries, had stress fractures in his back in first season. Had a reasonable output at VFL level this year, including a 5 goal haul.

James Van Es - another delisted from the Saints, 196cm Key Defender. Good lock down type with good long kick on him, and can intercept. Went onto Saints inactive list this season after ankle surgery, was his 3rd ankle injury at the club. Assume after his latest surgery he's good to go!

Anyone else rumoured?

Based on who we took in the draft, feel Van Es represents the biggest list need.

Think I'd rather any of the other options that isn't Burgiel tbh

seems pretty clean by hand

I do wonder how much his lack of pre-draft hype was affected playing for Western Jets instead of one of the glamour clubs. That and his unglamorous head and style of play
