Millenial was a new one on me and I had to look up what it meant. I usually refer to Gen X or Gen Y but as Gen Y refers to someone born between 1980-2000 I can see why we need a new stereotype grouping. I guess the Gen X and Y's have to be able to pass on some of the shit us baby boomers have given them over the years. :)
I'd never heard of the term before this thread. Now I use it to refer to anyone younger than a boomer.

The age groupings are not fixed and many people will argue about the exact years but my experience puts them as follows,
Baby Boomer born 1945-64
Gen X born 1965-79
Gen Y born 1980-94
Gen Z born 1995- 05
Gen Alpha born 2006 to present

The term Millenial seems to be replacing Gen Z and Gen Alpha which were in use a few years back. I like the term and I think it is easier to group as follows :

Baby Boomer born 1945-64
Gen X born 1965-79
Gen Y born 1980-99
Millenial born 2000- present

Clearly you aren't working in marketing then otherwise you would be "laser focused" on how to "drive penetration" into this "emerging segment". Lucky you.

Don't forget to disrupt!

And be sure to be on top of the next bullshit buzz word that sounds like it means something new but actually doesn't.

I thought it was a Star Wars reference.

Well calling them "Gen Z" kinda implies "the last" generation, and between the poles of Global Warming worshippers and Hanson/Trump/Farrago stupored-stupid-alarmed-and-armed lifestyle-choicers there's enough existential angst out there already.

How about we just label every living human on earth now as generation dipstick.. it's easier & reality.

I love the concept that generation Y/Z/whatever are any more all about themselves than their predecessors.

The generational labels are really just about anticipating behaviours for marketing purposes. They're not meant as a 'one size fits all' character/personality definition, but they do work well when devising strategies for a broad audience of a particular age profile.

The 'all about themselves' attitude is more in tune with the age profile rather than the generational profile. (ie all generations pass through the 'seflish' phase. Some just never leave it ... cough ... boomers ... cough.)

Generations were historically (haha gedit) every 25yrs. Now days meanings seem to be a lot more fluid.
I hestitate to use the word gay anymore in its literal sense. As a baby boomer I call anyone under 25 the 'omg' generation.

Pretty much. My daughters are into 'like' this 'like' that and it's all I can do to hold my tongue.
Still i'm not blameless either. I consciously refrain from 'I remember when' or 'back in my day"
as i'm sure that when I used to, their eyes would glaze over. When I was younger I was determined not to turn into
a grumpy old man and now, too often i've found myself turning into a grumpy ... ... :(
