The delisting of Menzel shows what a bad state our game is in

Its one of those decisions where everyone will either be praising Geelong at the end of next year or condemning them.

Its a shame for Menzel personally though. I honestly think without all the knee problems he would have been better than Stevie J but it just wasn't to be.
his brother troy also played for the blues and looked to have heaps of talent.
He was traded to the Crows and alas was delisted after just 2 years

You just recruited Gary Rohan who has played 106 in 9 and played at least one in all of them. He also played fewer games than Menzel this year.
Yep, not talking about who we recruit-just talking about the Menzel situation. Not an unreasonable decision by the club. What’s with all the self-righteousness on this thread?
Let’s see if your club picks him up as a replacement for lecras.

Its a sad state of where geelong is at. Dont blame the game. Its geelong.

Motlop, caddy, menzel, chapman and steve johnson. All similar sort of players and all treated like pieces of sh*** by the current geelong administration.

Don't forget Bartel. That one still burns me

This has nearly always been the case. How many teams have had star forwards who are great with the ball in hand but were only ever moderately successful at best. Heaps. I can think of heaps from the 90s and 00s.

The game is in good shape, the top sides are good to watch, pressure footy is awesome and teams playing well in pressure games is even better.

Menzel is an average player who has had a long history of regular injuries which has held him back significantly.

An elite sport which isn't high pressure, highly difficult come on, that's not an elite sport, that's kick and giggle.

At 190cm / 90kg Menzel is a 'tweener in modern footy. A rich man's Ben McKinley.

In the 90s he would've been a star, but in the 90s he would've been a key forward. Gary Ablett Sr kicked 100+ 3 years in a row and didn't tackle. Tony Modra was 188cm and had fewer tackles in his whole career than renowned pressure forward (ha) Mark LeCras had this season.

His lack of defensive pressure is well documented (1 tackle, 1 1%er a game) but he also doesn't do that much offensively. He's great to watch when he has he ball but 11 touches, 1-2 goals, 2 inside 50s a game isn't really what you want from a bloke that only runs one way. If he could get involved in the game more he'd be a valuable player. Jamie Cripps (who is excellent defensively) was in the same boat, just hovering around 10-11 disposals a game and kicking a goal or two most weeks. He now pushes up the ground more and this year got 16 touches and 3.5 inside 50s a game to go with his 38 goals.
Amazing stat. If you went to the 1996 R20 game between Adelaide and North, you truly saw a once in a lifetime event. Modra laid THREE tackles.

It’s just short term pain for long-term gain anyway. They know what he’s capable of post-injuries (and there’s no guarantee that’s the end either) and decided they’d rather invest in other small forwards.

He’ll be useful at another club for a few years, but that’s best case scenario.

We might, but I doubt it. Optus Stadium is supposedly very hard, so I doubt a hard surface and travelling every second week would bring the best out of a bloke who has had 4 knee recos.

Are your feelings hurt? It's an unusual decision to axe a 27 year old injury prone guy to just go and pick up another one.

Pretty common for the era. Tackle numbers have taken off the last few years because the game has more stoppages. Plus it's more of a focus than it used to be. Back in the 90s a player like Menzel would only leave the forward 50 when the siren went.

Adelaide led the league in tackles in 1993 with 762. 25 years later Brisbane came in last with 1278. Collingwood had 1776 in top spot, more than 1,000 more than the Crows in 93.

Jack Riewoldt won the Coleman with 70 goals this year and had 60 tackles. Would've been #1 at his team in 1993. Jeff Hogg and Richo combined for 15.

Menzel has been at the Cats for ages now, played a number of games the last few seasons and the Cats have come up short when it matters. Menzel in particular was one of their worst players in their final. They've decided to move in a different direction and give someone else a crack. They're a team rightly or wrongly vying for a flag. They also cannot trust Menzel's body.
This!! There has to be more to the medical evidence that we are not privy to. Geelong would not offer him more than 12 months contracts. St Kilda had Menzel examined and pulled out....

Clubs need to move on their long term injured as soon as the sympathy levels ebb or it becomes a lost cause.
We did it with AJ and Geelong have taken the opportunity to move on Menzel.
Both v v good prospects and showed a lot at times, but no doubt ticking time bombs.
Seeing AJ delisted meant they could move on Menzel without criticism. He wasnt exactly setting the world on fire, and charity has a limit.

Especially with Gary becoming a FP out of necessity. Just not needed.

Good move.

Different game back then.

Modra was paid to kick goals - not to emulate some Rugby League automaton laying tackles.
Absolutely and it doesn't take away from Modra's ability - it's just amazing to compare stats like that which have changed a lot.

Haha, on the contrary, a little baffled as to why so many of you have a vested interest in this action.
Rohan and menzel different injuries, different type of players.

You still can, but there are only so many you can carry. And you certainly cannot carry 3 like Geelong try too

This. He'd be a great fit at Richmond imo who have a forward line filled with high-pressure types. I think WC would be a good destination too especially after the retirement of Frenchy. Those are the clubs I'd be looking at, I see him more as a 'cream' type player to complement an already great team

Reminds me alot of Chapman having to move on.

Even Steve Johnson, one of the smartest fowards in the modern era and was forced to play midfield only to be discarded.

Would have thought he was higher in the pecking order, above cockatoo etc..
This is nothing like Chapman! Chappy wasn't forced out coz the team had lost faith in his performance! Chappy was forced out coz of age and team salary Cap constraints! There is no such thing as pecking order when trying to develop a chemistry that works on the forward line but my argument to that is it not the forward line that the Cats have the real issue with, It more with ball movement and running patterns that Chris Scott is culpable for! Sure, as I have mentioned on this thread that Menzel is not strong enough to go with key defenders and too slow against small defenders but someone with such skill and determination, should be given a spot on the Cats list coz they not easy to come by and if the Cats were able to feed him a good supply then he would capitalize with goals.
Now as for Stevie Jay, his ego outgrew the team and the Cats had to let him go for the sake of team harmony! There's No 'I' in team!

I for one find it rather sad that a player with as much talent as Menzel has gets delisted.

Let’s face it, he is one of the most exciting players with the ball in hand in the competition and was delisted because he doesn’t do what is required of modern day medium to small forwards - tackling and applying pressure.

The Richmond team is a good example of this - a group of forwards who excel at tackling and applying pressure that don’t have a lot of talent.

10-20 years ago Menzel would be an absolute star but these days, there’s no room for talent, just really fit players who can run and chase all day.

Richmond forwards don’t have a lot of talent?

as long as you have added those things to your quota of things to do this year.. we won't know if it is something to make happen
when these things are dubious.. hang on.. I have a message that these things are possible...

catch a wave and something will be done...

This.

Geelong's forward line was terrible last year, and it's about to get even worse. Hawkins is now their only good forward, and he will be 31 next year.
Just like when Lonergan and Mackie retired the cries were our defense is in tatters. Just like I told you at the same time last year, our defense would be ok.

And I'll tell you again the same time this year. Our forward line will be better with Menzel gone and with the additions of Rohan, Dahlhaus, Cockatoo and Ratugolea.

See you blokes again at the end of 2019 when you try and tell us our midfield is going to get worse.
