At some stages this year our players got made to look very soft

Perhaps that was where we missed Sammy's influence on the players - let's face it Sammy wasn't renowned for his niceties when he was a player and can recall many of our midfielders complimenting Sammy on getting the best out of them. From my observation Mitchell + Van Berlo = good but Van Berlo + Rosa = just so so???

What are our thoughts regarding SPP and Acres?

Personally I'd prefer Acres - more skilled and versatile. Given that we have plenty of senior mids taking up centre square time, I think we should be looking at picking up someone who can play a role on a HFF/Wing/HBF while offering a midfield rotation. Acres can do that. I think he has a lot of unrealised potential due to mismanagement and injuries. I also imagine that St Kilda will be more motivated sellers than Port, given their need to acquire picks for their various trade targets. Pick 33 could get it done for Acres, but I doubt it is enough for SPP.

SPP is younger and would offer a point of difference with his aggression, but I think he'd struggle to fit into our game plan because of his poor skills. He's wasteful in front of goal, kicking 10.18 this past season, and gives away two frees for every one he is awarded. There are also the reported off-field issues.

Acres would basically have to be a late pick,hasnt shown enough to be worth too much

I'm surprised at how many people on here don't realise how poor SPP's kicking is. Trying to talk about it as if it is just a minor deficiency.

His career kicking efficiency is 51.6%, which would comfortably be the worst among our midfield group.
He averages 4 clangers from 18.8 touches per game, which from what I can tell is the worst rate among midfielders in the league. Fyfe averages less clangers from more than ten extra touches per game, and he's hardly known for being a good kick.
SPP also kicks ~2 behinds/OOTFs for every goal.
Make no mistake, he is truly an awful kick of the football.

But they aren’t blokes we can risk getting booked for running straight lines at big moments. And I think he is a better option than Hutchings.

Neale was 6 and 19 with 30 back. 6 is a lot better than 11 and in a lot better draft too. Your scenario is hardly “way overs”. Can’t be fagged looking up Shiel as Kelly is twice the player so should command more.

I’d blow my load if we got Acres. Personally think you’re right in regards to unrealised potential he has. Think if there’s anyone to do it, it’ll be eagles who bring the best out in him. Has shown glimpses of absolute quality. Just needs to get a proper crack at one position in the team rather than played as a Mr Fix it like he gets used at the saints

Yeah I'd play Acres on a wing personally. He averaged ~21 touches across 2017-18 - so he can clearly find the footy.
He's a great runner and has shown a good balance of contested and uncontested footy, as compared to someone like Masten. A bigger (191cm, 90kg), more aggressive player on the wing opposite Gaff would help with our contested footy woes.
If the money's right and we can get him for a pick that doesn't compromise the Kelly deal, he'd be a great get.

I'm for getting SPP, but I kinda hope he hangs on for 1-2 years at Port before requesting a trade as he'd be a pretty timely replacement for Shuey/Redden who are 30 next year.

We offer issac smith a 2 year contract with a trigger for 3rd year as he is only getting 1 year atm . Bit like the mitchell and lewis deals . Hawks also put $ towards his salary

We lose petracelle but I have a feeling big offers for him will roll in next year we cant match .

You're forgetting (conveniently) the best player in the comp was worth 9 and 28. He was RFA and Adelaide said they would match unless you traded, so trade you did. Kelly is no Dangerfield so worth a lot less.

Personally anything more than 22 and 33, I'd walk and say bugger off, go to the draft and we'll do the same. I'd rather he went to Freo than pay more.
