In the 2 cases I recall that players went to the draft when a deal could not be reached bot got through to their preferred club. The players were Ball and Stevens.

There is always a risk of another club jumping in but would they really want to use a high draft pick on a player that has made it very clear does not want to be at their club.

You forgot Tippet to the Swans.

From an outsider's perspective, the fairest trades are those where both parties involved in the trade feel aggrieved.

The Judd trade is the best example.
We felt we should have gotten pick 1, not pick 3. They wanted to keep Kennedy.
In the end neither party got exactly what they wanted, but the deal was done.

The deal for Kelly will be similar to other recent trades (Treloar, Beams, Shiel).
WCE R1 2019 + WCE R1 2020 for Kelly + GEE R2 2020.

That values Kelly at around pick 6. Quite fair to me.

And thats the exact trade I want to happen.

We win the flag next year, Cats get pick 18 which will blow out to 22ish due to nga bids.

Cats drop away with an aging list we get their 2nd around pick 30-35ish.

Kelly costs us pick 13 plus a 10 to 12 pick downgrade in 2020.

We use 22 and 32 this year plus one other in the national draft.

There's no reason why we shouldn't be aiming for top 4 next year.
We just missed out this year.

Kelly is a premier goal kicking midfielder who would make a huge
difference to our team. They don't come about that often, especially
for WA sides.

Picks 14 and 23 should get it done.

Our first next year will likely be around 23 with all the nga kids.

We should use 23 this year, trade our 2020 1st and get the Cats 2020 2nd back.

We get another decent kid into the system now and cop a pick downgrade in 2020 in a compromised draft.

If we really wanted to we could just call theirs and Freos bluff and send him to the ND where we’ll get him for a single pick and keep our second rounders. If Freo want to use a top 10 pick on him they can go for it. I think that’s why a deal gets done pretty early, because, even though it’s very unlikely we’d ever pull anything like that, it’s still a distinct possibility if Geelong decide to dig their heels in and be arses again. We offer 13 and 22, Geelong sign off on it day 1.

That’s right, so 3 of them. If Geelong get greedy then maybe that’s the option. Get him for pick 13.
We will have picks before 13 , He won't be there at 13 , Freo will grab him if he goes the draft route , We will not politely pass to allow you guys to pick him up at 13.I also don't think Kelly would feel comfortable with Geelong getting nothing after the Club took a risk on him and gave him his opportunity at AFL level.

Hardly. You make it sound like Geelong saved his life. This is the same club who's forced him to stay in Victoria on rookie wages for the past 12 months despite his desire to come home for family reasons.

West Coast has been in constant dialogue with Kelly for years i believe, hence his preference.

Daresay he would've had an inkling he'd be drafted by 'an' AFL club if not the eagles in 2017.

As much as I don't like agreeing with Shocker supporters, this is correct. In we force Kelly to the draft Freo will just pick him, and after everything Geelong have done to get him settled + making at least a prelim he'll probably want to do the right thing by the club anyway and just stay if an agreement cant be reached. If we want him bad enough we'll have to fork out overs for him, because Geelong will want to push their list as far as it can go before they fall in a heap in a couple of years and have to start again.

Good to have member of the Freo list management team on board.

His priority would be getting where he wants to go. Geelong's level of comfort would be a factor but not the primary concern.

This time last year Geelong said that <insert preferred combination of picks> wasn't enough and they would not trade Kelly to WC. Which is fine, clubs don't have to trade contracted players but they made it known where their priorities lie. Make no mistake about it, if Kelly ends up in the draft it's because Geelong decided that getting nothing in return was a better outcome than whatever was offered.

I guess taking players that don’t want to be at your club is unavoidable for Freo.

Not a fan of involving next years 1st either due to the risk of next year going pear shaped for whatever reason

Still think our current 13 & 22 is close to the mark given he is uncontracted. Neale who was contracted went for 6 & 19 with pick 30 going back to the Lions
While anything could happen to us next year I also think 1 year of development is important.

Pick 22 this year plus the year of development is better than pick 12-18(at best) next year.

He said last year his preferred club was West coast , He hasn't said anything so far this year. His stance may have changed , I guess we will know next week if results go they way they are expected.

He hasn't said anything at all this year because he is a professional and Geelong's season is still in play. There has been nothing to suggest that anything has changed from last year apart from his manager alluding to the fact that Freo are now an option, however this can be put down to him correcting his mistake last year of categorically ruling Freo out which diminished Kelly's bargaining power.

I very much doubt that Freo have done anything this year to change his mind.

Let's be honest, why would he want to play for any club in WA other than the Eagles, or Subiaco?

Don't mean to be rude or point out the obvious here but..
  • No coach :whitecheck:
  • No CEO :whitecheck:
  • No flag :whitecheck:
  • 13k less supporters turn up each week :whitecheck:

Maybe Cockburn has good parking?

True.

But we are discussing players who have entered the draft instead of being traded and got to where they wanted to.

Tippet did that!

That is true, but I think in Tippett's case going in the draft was the right option in the end given what happened.

Ben Jacobs went in the draft from Port to North. Bachar Houli and John Anthony moved via the PSD but I don't think there was much trade interest in either.
