The fix was in, in '34! Bob Quinn & co. were filthy with the ump that day. According to legend, even worse than our last two games against Carlton combined.

lol, max...

Back when I was a kid, the old timers used to talk of the 1934 Grand Final being the Australian equivalent of the 1919 World Series.

Port in financial trouble - Pack em off to Tassie.

Glenelg in financial trouble - We MUST SAVE THEM.

Yeh.
I'd financially support the Taliban before I'd give one red cent to Glenelg.

It's a veritable who's who of small time cronies. If one of them was kidnapped tomorrow no one would care, and the rest wouldn't have the funds to cough up the ransom anyway.
If someone were to kidnap Cornesy, the kidnappers would send a ransom note, which would read something like this, "IF WE DO NOT RECEIVE ONE MILLION DOLLARS WITHIN 24 HOURS, WE'LL SEND HIM BACK UNHARMED."

I have a great uncle who still rages at the injustice of that game. Apparently the umpire had to quickly hop on train to Perth and was never seen in Adelaide again.
If bigfooty had been around back then, I wonder if Port fans would have written an 84 page thread about him......

How typical to blame the success of others for one's own failings.

would love to say "didn't read lol" but here are some nuggets of Cornes Gold:

In hindsight, we could have done it differently. What would have happened had the SANFL not stopped Port from joining the VFL in 1990?

Clearly the club, with no universal support, overwhelming state resentment and resistance, and only Alberton Oval as a home ground would have failed within three to five years (Did not the West Coast Eagles Mark 1 fail after 12 months?).

As it was, Port Adelaide survived only with the assistance of the SANFL after it joined the AFL in 1997.

It surely would have failed had it tried to go alone in 1990. How much stronger then would the SANFL’s bargaining position to offer the “team for all South Australian’s” have been? Could it have ensured the relevance and financial security of its other nine clubs?

Last Saturday I sat in the outer at Alberton Oval. This is traditionally a hostile environment for visiting supporters but it was, nevertheless, quite pleasant.

The winter sun was warming and Glenelg was beating the Magpies in a high-class entertaining match.

Had it not been for my seven-year-old daughter in a Port Power jumper constantly yelling “Go you Maggies”, and the disappointment of the Magpie coach which impacts on the rest of the family, it would have been the perfect footy afternoon.

but if the AFL is the tip of the pyramid, SANFL, grassroots, suburban and regional footy form the base and the frame without which the pyramid will surely crumble.

It’s still easier to blame Port Adelaide though!

I was at Alberton on Saturday and after the game I ventured onto the middle of the oval to kick the footy with my son. At one point I looked up to see a tall, skeletal figure clad completely in black lurching towards me and for a moment I thought the angel of death had descended to collect my mortal soul - turned out to be Graham Cornes. He was being trailed by two young girls (daughters/granddaughters/great-granddaughters - who knows) head to toe in Port gear and it brought a smile to my face, knowing that karma is torturing him every waking minute of his life.
