The numpty questions thread

Thank you for the thread. This is my first posting.

I think numpty questions are for Big Footy lurkers who dont know anything about football and perhaps even less about how to work a discussion thread. But who would really like to come in and play.:D

Is there any where on the board where there is a write up of Sun coast Lions games?

Did any of this work??? Hello out there..........

Glad you're onboard. Usually if people make it to Suncoast games they'll post some notes and sometimes even photos. If not, then someone will copy and paste the writeup on the AFLQ website.

here's a numpty question.

1%ers. Can someone please explain this to me as I am having a few issues with the term. Simon Black often gets referred to as a 1%er and he certainly contributes more than 1% in a game.

I think a 1%er is a collective term for things like shepherds, smothers etc. In other words, you perform a 1%er, you are not called a 1%er....that would be insulting!

1 percenters is a loose term for the team aspects of footy, l know many of these have been put on already but i will give you a list

Tackles
Shepherds
Blocks
Knock ons
talk
creating space
sacrificial acts (have fun with this one);)

anything that is team orientated and not a kick, mark or handball can be considered a 1% but it is a fluid term that you can use anytime. It always sounds good if you attach it to a player eg. Adcock had heaps of 1 percenters tonight.

Thanks POBT and TFB - I hadn't actually realised that those were 'old' terms these days but I guess that explains why I hadn't heard 'rover' mentioned for years!

Great explanations guys - I can now pretty much just go with forwards, backs, rucks and midfielders and feel like I know who is who. Cheers.

Macmum - sorry - I hadn't been back to the thread until today. Numpty in my mind kind of does mean 'silly' or perhaps more 'those questions I would have been embarrassed to ask anywhere else'. So numpty is an affectionate term in my mind for 'not really having any idea what I'm talking about' ... :):) Like knaf said - now we can come and play too!

ETA - I didn't think this thread would actually end up being called 'numpty questions' but I love that it is!

No worries. While the terminology for actual positions is lessened these days, many of the terms are still used to describe an area of the ground.

Apologies if this has been asked/suggested before and my ignorance if it is somewhere on the Lions board, but is there a spot that we could list upcoming radio/TV interviews that the Lions are conducting in advance so that we are at least aware of them.

Case in point: Was over in Perth last week and a mate called me at 1800 WST and told me Possum was being interviewed on 6PR on their sport show. Once I knew, obvioulsy i tuned in, but if there was a spot to post this news many of you would have been able to jump on the 6PR website and listened - was a really good interview considering we don't hear from Possum too much.

Same if you know Browny or any other Lion will be on "On the Couch" or "Footy Show" or Sports Tonight etc. I don't have time to watch all footy related shows but if I knew prior to the show that a Lion was on I would tune in.

Also, I seemed to miss it every week but I know Browny used to do a spot on Sport 927 in Melbourne every Tues morning IIRC. Does anyone do anything in Brisbane on a regular basis on the equivalent to 3AW/6PR/5AA - isn't 4?? something up there?

With so many news outlets, if we had a spot to notify each other would be a great help considering most radio shows are available on line. I appreciate that sometimes, like last Friday on the way to dinner I heard Browny being interviewed, again on 6PR, but at least if i was home i could have posted that he was on - you get my drift?

Only a suggestion but everytime the Lions play out of Brisbane you will find interviews being conducted on some rather esoteric outlets that some of you may know of. Hopefully this gets some legs or as i said earlier, are we already doing this? Thoughts

Black is going to interviewed on SEN now....

Edit - Only news of note was that he said Adcock's scans have come up very promising, may even have a run at training this arvo and Black contrasted Leigh's "unlikely" by saying he thought Adcock was "likely" to line up on friday night. Doesn't neccessarily mean much, but at least the injury isn't that bad.

What is tunnelling? (Feels like new terms have sprouted while I've been looking the other way)

I bought Champion Data's AFL Prospectus for 2008 and they give technical definitions for stats such as clangers, hardball gets, contested marks, effective possessions etc etc... if people are interested I'm happy to transcribe some of the key ones.

Watching tonights game and think the Middle looks like shit, What the go there ?

1) It is a game in the wet

2) It is a ground with a cricket centre square so to soften it up this early in the AFL season it is kept a lot damper than it would usually be

3) It is a game in the wet

The main issue is the only way to replace the turf in the middle would be to dig up the cricket pitches. All cricket grounds in the wet get torn up in the centre square. Btw - sorry if I sounded a little blunt in my previous post, reading it back i think it needed an appropriate ;) to ensure my implied jovial nature was visible
