You could argue that Carlton's loss to North was worse considering the relative quality of our opponents... That's a positive!
I had similar thoughts but put them in the non-Lions thread because while "not being Carlton" is definitely a positive, much like "kicking three goals" it's still a very low bar to clear. :p

Although the percentage is looking quite terrible after todays game.
Our average score against is down to 103.5 after the first 4 games. Down from 114.8 last year.

Almost two goals better.

Points For are down from 325 to 265, so an average of 2.5 goals worse

Let’s call that 17 point game an aberration (after all this is a Positives thread) and things actually look pretty good from a defensive point of view. With less scoring down the forward end, the avalanche of turnover ball coming in at our defensive end has arguably increased.

So on that basis, our defensive structures have improved, despite the notion floated by many that our defenders are “no good”

I don’t think it was a nod of agreement. Those kind of nods are more of a ‘you got unlucky’ kind of nod. Also, the call seemed correct anyway, he clearly hit the ball over to the boundary without the intent to actually stop it. The umpire just let Hodge say what he wanted and then let him leave.
I thought watching it he was trying to tap to his advantage and get around the Richmond player, shows the difference in perception doesn’t it.

There's shit, then there's losing to North by 86 points shit

Every morning when I wake up, I first close my eyes and pray and I thank God that He did not make me a Carlton fan. I mean, seriously, we may be bad but at least we're bad on hard mode.

We've played four finals contenders, three interstate, competitively in three and given a proper scare to two. Carlton have so far lost to Richmond (fair enough) but also GC, Collingwood and North (snerk). The only night their kids have needed to spend away from Mum's lasagne was in Tasmania.

In the NEAFL we've thumped Sydney and only lost to a point against NT Thunder, while Carlton are 0-2 including a 130 point loss to Collingwood.

In the AFLW we may not have won a grand final but we've been pretty darned good both years whereas Carlton are the reigning spooners and are looking like a joke.

One doesn't like to use excuses to explan poor football, but if we did we've got some darn good 'uns. Carlton, on the other hand, are handed every possible advantage on a platter. A regular stream of want-home Giants on tap. More start-of-first-round priority picks than you can poke a stick at. Extensions to the salary cap in the form of dodgy media tie-ins. 16-odd home-state games a year. Favourable timeslots (to a ridiculous degree).

And, playing in the easiest of easy modes, after using every cheat code available, they're being torn to shreds by the tutorial mission.

Whatever else you may say, at least we're not Carlton.

But wait....there's more

Even more positivity, that is

After quarter time, we scored more goals yesterday against the reigning premiers than Melbourne did today against a side that didn't even make the 8.

Pfft.....Melbourne....under 7 footy.
and yet they beat us... Unfortunately, it is all about pressure and we can't consistently apply enough pressure to teams for long enough periods to win against good or even mediocre teams ... yet

We could lose by 150 points to the Suns and I'd still feel better about our club now than I did prior to us drafting Eric Hipwood.

The kid is special, and he's shown that already at AFL level. Generally stands up in big moments (not 100% of the time, but no-one does) and has all the tools to be the best KPF in the game. There's a lot of talented KPFs going around, so he probably won't end up the best, but he'll likely go damn close.

20 years old and has already played 34 games for 46 goals. Tracking along very nicely when compared to others his age.

From the same draft (drafted before Hippy):
Josh Schache - 27 games, 25 goals (all for us). Struggling at VFL level for the Dogs, currently injured.
Sam Weideman - 10 games, 6 goals. Developing in the VFL with some recent calls for Goodwin to bring him into the side.
Harry McKay - 2 games, 3 goals. Developing in the VFL.
Charlie Curnow - 31 games, 34 goals. Looks like a future star.

From the same draft (drafted after Hippy):
Ben McKay - 1 game, 0 goals. Developing in the VFL.
Jack Silvagni - 30 games, 27 goals. Looks okay but not brilliant.
Wylie Buzza - 6 games, 5 goals. Looks decent, though will probably struggle for games at the Cats. A year older than Hippy.

From the 2014 draft and a year (or more) older than Hippy:
Paddy McCartin - 26 games, 24 goals. Well-documented concussion issues, has shown a few signs this season. Hasn't lived up to #1 pick hype.
Peter Wright - 42 games, 59 goals. Looked great last year, currently injured.
Darcy Moore - 49 games, 60 goals. Currently being experimented with down back. Has shown great talent but it also hasn't really "clicked" for him yet.
Mitch McGovern - 40 games, 57 goals. Holding down a spot in a very good Crows side, looks good. Three years older than Hippy.

Can't really see any there that I'd trade Hippy for. Curnow has all the makings of a superstar, though Hippy has 12 more goals from only 3 more games at this stage.

An absolute gem and definitely a player we should all be positive and excited about! One of only two players on our list that I could genuinely see being considered the best in the business at some stage (Rayner the other).

Same goes at the other end with Harry. Both great starts & both really talented, exciting young men. The knockers of either these 2 really know little about footy from a development stage. If we wanna keep em both we better start to appreciate their current & potential efforts for our club. Nobody in the afl are doing it harder than these 2.

In our first four games our best players have included Berry, Clugga, Rayner, Robbo and Cameron. When this group plays consistent football at a level they have already shown glimpses of, WATCH OUT!!
