Bulldogs poster VitalDread (who knows Oscar well) posted today on the Dogs board that the Big O will soon be signing a 3 year extension with us.
Good on him; that's a fair extension too given he is already contracted through to the end of 2021, so that will take him through to the end of 2024 and make him the only player contracted to 2024 (Lachie Neale being the only player contracted to end of 2023).

Hmm, maybe the poster meant he was extending to 3 years in total then... either way, nice to have him sewn up.

We'll soon see. Perhaps an extra year is just being added to his existing deal. Irrespective, the Big O story is one of the more impressive ones given the unconventional path he took by trying out at Casey, playing a season, being a speculative pick by the Lions to now being a crucial player to an up and coming team in the AFL.

A forward line that works and a defensive line that doesnt leak 100+ weekly.

Mcstay crashing through packs (fractured cheek and all)

Big O taking contested grabs and kicking big moment goals.

Hipwood getting a bag.

Walker in career best form.

Andrew's playing some good footy without being a standout.

Gardiner a rock.

Small forwards that work together.

Mids who win the ball for each other (not so much last weekend).

Not much else to say. Thank you Sir Fagan for bringing my love of football back.

I thought Gardiner was very poor on the weekend.

He got caught out watching his opponent to often, rather than watching his opponent and the ball coming in, which lead to his his opponent taking a couple of uncontested marks and kicking a couple of goals.

This is the positives thread Briz 😉

I agree it wasn’t his best, but it’s the first time in a year I can remember him not being at very least solid. Worth remembering he is coming off an interrupted pre-season.

61 I50's they had, for 9 marks....and yes, he had a couple of goals kicked on him.

I'd say he did ok - yes, got caught a couple of times....but with an I50 count that high, he held up pretty well.

Guilty as charged. Oh how wrong was I.

Onya Milux.
I reckon the thinking is along the lines of:
1) draft picks take at least 3 years to come to fruition so for 3 years you get little return on investment
2) The draft is much more even than people think. I think very little difference between pick 20 and pick 50. Good players come from all over ...
3) Not enough credit is given to less quantifiable factors such as development coaching, team morale etc
4) We had half a decade of low draft picks and they mostly buggered off or were not so good. What good did that do? Has it helped Carlton? Gold Coast?
5) If you can identify players who actually wanted to come here you do what you can to get the job done. It has a trickle down/waterfall effect. Build it and they will come ...
6) Recruiting/trading is all about identifying weaknesses and fixing them. Charlie - fast half forward, Linc - pressure forward, Lachie - contested ball inside mid. Drafting is just too hit and miss (and too long) to be able to precisely plug holes.
7) Not to mention trading out older players. eg. At the Crows 28 year old Bernie Vince got them Matt Crouch under Noble's watch. And we got ourselves a couple of first rounders for 28 yo Beams (who never played defensively because he was too selfish).

I think most fans just view the whole trading process a bit simplistically. We just don't know all the facts.

There was a few times he was playing on Rozee and he got out marked besides that he has been solid in all games. No one in the comp would of stopped rozee kicked 5 on the weekend he was that good.

On the flipside I thought his attack was very good and our defensive unit was very good given the amount of inside 50s.

Gardiner has come a long way in a relatively short time. When Fages came here Gardiner was a very limited defender. He could really only spoil or give away a free with unnnecessary aggression. Now he ranks alongside Harris and Rich as our most reliable defenders. His marking and offensive game is now very good and his aggression is used judiciously. Rozee got the better of him but talented young kids in their third game can do that to you. Which is not to underrate Rozee's effort but to say Dizzy probably didn't pay him close enough attention.

From October last year.

"Two of the Brisbane Lions brightest prospects have extended their contracts, with defender Darcy Gardiner and Oscar McInerney signing on until 2022 and 2021 respectively."

Rozee is 6'1. Gardiner is just shy of 6'5.

If we had a smaller, agile defender who could have stayed with Rozee's movement, maybe Gardiner wouldn't have been outmarked by a player 8cm shorter than him. It wasn't Rozee jumping over Gardiner, it was Rozee getting that separation and taking uncontested marks, and Rozee wasn't running faster than Gardiner to get that separation. It was just Gardiner being caught flat footed on a few occasions.

Yeah, sorry. I was replying to a statement I believed to be incorrect. And then replied to a follow up question.

NSIS???

Rayner has looked a little out of sorts but has still managed 5.6 in the three games. It could easily have been 8.3 and we would have all be raving about how he has come of age. Instead, there are grumblings, mumblings and other rumblings.

For goodness sake, he's only 19 and still learning forward craft

He'll be an absolute star in years to come.
