You seem to have forgotten the Port game (and even last week , when we withstood the dogs being well on top in the second half)

I'll rebut this by stating we had the lead...if they get lead, we find it very hard to come back form it. Not since 2015 from memory.

Not proposing to go super melty - what did this game tell us that didn't we already know?

We already knew the following:

1) We're a Nicnat-shaped midfielder away from top four
2) We have mental issues in Melbourne
3) We lack physicality and it hurts us when teams are fired up

We've done our best to paper over these issues - we shouldn't. Blood the kids and make this season count on the road to the next flag - but accept that it simply won't be this year.

Problem is - when the chips are down we all know we won't respond.

We do well to protect a lead, but gee whiz I can't recall a majestic come from behind win in Melbourne

So disappointing.
Even the North match was come from behind (they kicked the first 2 goals of the match)
But if you're referring to coming from behind later on in the match- Richmond 2015 comes to mind (we were leading for most of the game, but they mounted a comeback in the second quarter to take the 1/2 time lead)
But yeah I miss the glorious '06 Skilled Stadium comeback

Norf. In RND 1. Massive.

Not talking about that extreme type comeback.[/QUOTE]

Massive get taht, something we can hang our hat on.

Yes you;re right and I'll concede that, but gee whiz it's slim pickings.

So we should sack our coach, change our captain and cut senior players because we lost one game? Yes, it was a terrible performance, but we shouldn't be giving up the season because we folded to a team that is probably a lot better then we think. Additionally, when was the last time we played at Etihad?
I don't think the majority of people on here base their opinions, good and bad, based on one game, aside from immediate emotional responses. Those who do are pretty easy to pick out anyway.

Didn't see the game but let me guess.
When shit went south Hurn moped around admiring the job the groundsman had done on the grass.
The telling thing for me was half way through the second quarter, Cam Mooney on the boundary said that there was absolutely no talk going on. Where was the captain? Where was Priddis? Our two most (for the club) experienced players are poor leaders on field.

Aparently Nelson was fit - he should have played. Fantasia, Green and Tippunwuti kicked 7 goals between them. Hill should have played. Redden or Mutimer should been dropped. Obviously the players should take the majority of the blame for playing as s*** as they did. However, the problem with Simpson is that he messes with structures that worked so well in the past 3 games (against better opposition no less) and when it all goes horribly wrong, as was the case in EF last year, he ends up blaming the players.

The team is full of pea hearts and needs a captain who could inspire someone. Hurn is a nice guy. Full stop. He makes Glass look like Mr Charisma which is saying a lot... and he's a much worse player than Glass.

We fluked a grand final on the basis of an easy draw and a few players hitting peak form at the right time. Feel sorry for Mitchell who is a champion and surrounded by boys more into their haircuts and tats than success.

The key for me is when the team selection forces Chris Masten out. If you have a midfield where that plonka down hill skier doesn't get a game... you might have some reliable success.

Can't believe there are still people saying "it's only one game"...

This shit has been going on for years with this side, and it's always the same result. We are heroes at home and soft as butter away when the opposition hits us hard. Bruise free footy is what we are good at, but put intense physical pressure on us and we go to water.
We have the slowest midfield in the league, the slowest! When we come up against a side that has pace in any way (footskills and or run and carry speed), we get reamed. Today w were second to the ball at almost every midfield contest because we either can't get to the ball first (too slow), or we don't hit the contest hard being coz we're soft as butter. The problem is it's the same guys that go missing when the pressure is on and it's the same guys that get selected every week. This is the coach and MC's fault as much as it is the players because they've had enough chances to show their good enough and they're not. Time to **** off Priddis, Redden, Masten, Butler and bring in some of the guys who have been performing in the WAFL (Lamb, Hutch, Venables, Karps, Parto) and play the young guys who are already in the Eagles side in their proper ******* positions.

It doesn't matter if we dont finish in the 8 this year because we aren't going to win the flag with this current side, however, half a year of exposure at the top level could help the young guys settle and us be better positioned for next year when Nic & Lycett are back. Sick of the same old shit with nothing different really being done by management.
This comment is what people aren't understanding. We're going to make 1-2 changes next week, come out and fight hardish at home. But it's the same shit. The MC needs to realise when enough is enough. We have a list in their prime, they're either good enough or they aren't (quite clearly the majority aren't). Sure they are good sometimes but at this stage they should be competing every week (not necessarily winning)

Getting pretty sick of our recruiting as well. Always the same rubbish. It's either a slow "inside" player (redden), or small midfielders with good foot skills and no pace. We have a team full of the same player, there's no point of difference. Name one of our midfielders that can take a mark (on the lead or in the air). The game has gone past our list. It's not enough anymore to have an "only inside" and "only outside". Mids have to have an element of both to their game, something none of our guys have. Our team is to unbalanced.

Priddis and redden need to go, they just aren't fast or smart enough to get into space. I'd be happy with Mitchell and shuey in the middle with partington. Why are we bothering developing these guys when we are just floating along picking the same team every week, getting cheap home wins and not standing up in big games. Young guys would at least show a bit of heart.

Not in Melbourne
If you're only counting Melbourne games, then I agree, our record in Melbourne has been poor over that time

This comment in response to my Port example (and your other comment in response to my Skilled '06 example) made me think that you weren't just talking about Melbourne games anymore though

Is it really that shocking that Vic teams play better in Vic than they do elsewhere? We haven't been run down at Subi very often either.

Anyway, Bombers have the make up that has really troubled us in recent years with some very quick players who are able to cut through the zone with quick run and hit up kicks. Even back in the Woosh years, I remember Didak and Thomas tearing us apart in 2011. It's why Bennel was retained for as long as he was.

Come from behind wins need to come from midfield effort. Ie. Collingwood last night.

If the midfield is the standard that we have, we're never gonna be able to turn around a big deficit.

As much shit as our forwards and backline are copping, they can only do so much when they're compensating for a woefully overmatched midfield. Forwards are buggered and backline are under siege.

And/or NicNat heroics like v. GWS
Can't wait until he returns next year

I was pretty happy when we picked up Redden and was happy to write off last year because of his lack of preseason. But my god when Yeo missed that target and it went over other eagles players and close to Redden and he just stood there and watched as an Essendon player ran past him and got the ball, he has to be dropped. Has added nothing to our list.

I mentioned this in the gameday thread and it appears you were the only other person who noticed this ..So nice observation

I didn't watch the game so I'll just put it down to it being a bad day.

Forget about it and move on.

We have been doing that for the way to long now, but if thats the mindset you want to adopt , sure move on .

But don't expect any silverware to be won in the near future with that attitude.

Our Club continually fails to address its weaknesses.

We play Ok at Subi but shit away.
We keep playing the same guys who don't perform away from the safe warm fuzzy environment at Subi.

And as for admitting our weaknesses we excel at this.

What we really need is to finds some players who is the face of adversity, playing away from home with out their Mums there to watch them play, drive them home and later wash the dirty jumpers.
To play with some of this.

Sadly until the West Coast Management are prepared to address the problems at the Club.
You can expect more of this away from home.
