Fair call, different regimes. I would have thought you need some more strength in your forward line with so many mid-sizers, Howe looks to have a frame he could build on to me.
Yes and no.

Watts clearly, but the likes of Jurrah, Petterd and Dunn are about right I'd imagine.

Howe is the toss-up, how big does he get before it starts to impede his main asset, his leap?

Well you have to remember that size and strength are 2 completely different things, the likes of the jurrah and petterd do need to get stronger, and petterd needs to get bigger if he is going to play in the midfield, i envisage him as a stevie j type player.

Before we recruited Clark i was all for Howe bulking up and spending more time deep, now i think he should stay as is and work with the midfield group alot more.

Most sides play with a couple of key forwards , one or 2 mid sized forwards and then rotating midfielders forward, we play with no key forwards, 7 mid sized forwards and a 1 or 2 mids who rotate forward, hopefully neeld will change this balance which means howe and petterd and jurrah might have to re invent themselves as midfielders as well or risk being out of the team.

Size follows strength...

People get confused because of that you can train for 'strength' and for 'size'...

What training for strength is the ability to increase a max, for a low number of reps. While size is strength for a higher number.

All this is related to lean muscle mass of-coarse and not fat.

ThePuppetMaster's Report - 28/11/11

Here it is; the (almost annual considering the gap between the first and this) 2nd report of Pre-season training... and it will be a mammoth one.

I arrived at about 10am (yet again) and proceeded to sit down and watch the boys train for two and a half enjoyable hours.

Before I start a report, I'd like to ask a question... were any of you the young man being accosted by a creepy and accented middle aged man?

If so, LOL... that happened to me the first week I attended.

The new recruits

No doubt you'll all be keen to hear about our new recruits; to be honest I was really pleased with the efforts of all of them.

Rory Taggert:
I feel we have a player here; he's an excellent size and he will fill out very, very well (will reach 90+ kg's; which is excellent for a 187-8cm kid). I first noticed him when some players were doing a kicking drill, he has a very good kicking technique and gets great ball-spin and trajectory.

One moment which highly impressed me was during a semi match-simulation he went head to head with one Nathan Jones for a contested ball; to my surprise Taggert won the ball really cleanly and disposed of it equally so.

I'd hope he'd get some exposure next year.

Josh Tyan:

Was understandably a little nervous and unsure of himself; but there are definitely things to like about this lad. He does need to put on a lot of weight but he flies well for his marks and looked to have a really tidy bit of disposal about him.

James Sellar:
I'll be honest, I wasn't sure what to expect with Sellar.... but he impressed me. He was playing and training as a defender and he attacked the ball really well... he also has very tidy disposal skills (especially for a big man) and moves particularly well.

He's genuine CHB material.

Warm up

The main group did some light stretching and then proceeded to peg through 150-200 meter run-throughs. The pairings seemed to be in order of those with the best aerobic performance/capacity this pre-season.

Notable mentions go to Bate in the first pair, Nicholson in the 2nd/3rd who routinely destroyed Jones in the run, Bennell in the 5th and Watts in the 6th pair (although I felt he could have buried Dunn if he wanted to).

The rehab group partook in some fun and games.

First Session

There were a couple of notables in the rehab group; Col Sylvia, Strauss, Jetta, Jurrah, Lawrence, Petterd and Bail (must have recently injured himself or the like) ran laps and/or circuits in areas of the ground; Jurrah had a trainer running with him... pushing him along.

Evans was off doing his own set of drills, which seemed to be working primarily on his kicking skills (which do need a bit of brushing up).

During this session the group had a very brief kick-to-kick style warm-up and then dived straight into it; starting with a 'circle-work' esque transition of play drill.

The players marked the ball from an entry inside 50 then proceeded to hit a short pass/handball on their side of the ground before switching play and moving the ball quickly (with players leading toward the boundary line) down the wing and to the opposite end of the forwardline.

Jones had a little trouble with his kicking in this exercise, Watts sat at the other end of the spectrum and was hitting targets with right or left.

Second Session

This session was much more revealing, both from a player performance point of view and a tactical point of view.

There seemed to be an emphasis on working the ball out of the press; obviously this meant that one team had the ball and one team was forcing the press.

Players were encouraged to either take a player on and hit a target or handball once and go long to a target (as far as I could tell).

Watts, Clark and Martin seemed to be the targets up forward; and they seemed to rotate with each other as two deep and one roaming.

They then did a drill where they practice inside 50 entries from stoppages; with calls to kick the ball as soon as possible coming from Royal.

Watts was really clean during these drills, and he looked incredibly alert as well; He didn't waste a possession and ran hard.

Nicholson and Jones were involved as well.

Sellar made a good impression with his attack on the ball against Clark and Martin.

Howe was quite impressive, he looks very fit (and bigger) and was barking instructions to the other players; especially the two young boys... he was very clean in the air and by foot as well.

Frawley also was quite vocal.

They then split into talls and smalls.

The talls did a contested marking drill and the smalls focused on contested ground balls and gathers.

Misc:

Gysberts is being pressured by the coaches and players alike, they obviously rate the lad and realize that he has a poor fitness base... I suspect he's a quiet lad as well and they are trying to bring out some fire in him. He's also put on a fair bit of weight.

Watts looks to have bulked up a bit as well.

Morton, McKenzie and Bartram walked laps for about half an hour; not sure why.

Jurrah looks bigger in the hips and arms.

Bate trained as a mid and a forward, Garland as a mid/back and the same with Bennell.

Blease was disappointing.

Strauss looked to have packed on some size, and was running fairly freely.

Tom Couch looked good as well, runs well and contests well.

Jamar, Trengove and McDonald all had less intense sessions.

Great work, TPM.

Ro Bail tweaked his groin last week, so having a quiet 7 - 10 days. Great to see the club putting heaps of time into Evo's kicking. The boy can really find the footy.

That stuff I said about Taggert may actually have been Fletcher Roberts... I'm not sure.

I thought it was Taggert because one, Roberts was a stick when I saw him in the TAC GF and two, he had nowhere near as good skills as was on show today.

But apparently it may well have been Roberts.

TPM, good to see you noticed Sellar trained well, was hoping for a training report to see if there was any comments, and there it was unbelievably written by none other than yourself.:D Hope that is a sign of things to come for him first training session and all. As I said before good luck:thumbsu:
