Saw Gladiator 2 today. Meh

Really didn't need a follow up.

Like I get it with the 300 and rise of empire since you needed to you know, punt the Persians somehow, but Gladiator;

General gets gazumped.
Pissy noble eventually meets same end.
Nice neat bow here.

Why did this need a sequel?

I get the original "Show de pantheon!!!11!" script leak instances, but not this future rando connection nonsense.

Agreed

It was poorly done too.

I'm of the opinion that the more ancient Rome on TV and movies - the better. Gladiator is top of the heap, as is the Rome HBO series.

The Dan Carlin Podcasts on Rome are top tier, too. Celtic Holocaust for one, Death Throes Of The Republic and Punic Nightmares are top tier.

His latest release (Thors Angels) also worth hearing.

Have you seen Gladiator 2?

I bought an ice cube tray from K-Mart a few weeks back, it makes large ice cubes. They either fit straight into a Yeti bottle, or need some gentle persuasion. But having large ice cubes is such an advantage in life.

I've got some round ice cubes doing their thing, but I'm not so stoked on them.

No, not yet. I liked the Pompeii movie, though. Not perfect, cliche, yes. But I just love seeing ancient Rome on screen.

I'm all for seeing ancient Rome on screen... I just want the movie to be good. I was up and about for this as I watched the first Gladiator recently with my son as he hadn't seen it.

It's just not very good... and that's me being kind, really.

Agree it was very average. I’ll take it because it doesn’t involve superheroes, musicals, no agenda (Denzel playing a Roman Emperor was lol) but it is forgettable

Don't know if you watch The Critical Drinker on Youtube, but he gives an insightful review (always does) of it, and while not the disaster the Joker sequel was, apparently it is just a dull rehash and a bit meh.

No one expects the Spanish Inquisition.
Everyone expects the Praetorian Guard.

Basically this.

I liken it a bit to Terminator in which there's legit first entry where you might have an idea of sequels. Just unlike Terminator which landed T2, in a word Gladiator 2 is just boring, so why did you just do the same things and shift to different people with brain damage as it's so damned slow?

So dull rehash checks out for mine.

Anywho...

India currently bending over the Aussies in Perth, hope everyone is safe.

I don't know how the movie industry has fallen so far. No-one makes anything original or interesting any more and if it is original it's usually unwatchable arthouse shit.

I was stuck watching a Wim Wenders film up in the bush with the wife about a Japanese toilet cleaner. It was probably better than 90% of the recent movies I've watched.....and it was like smoking a joint in a sensory deprivation tank levels of exciting.

I saw the Beekeeper with my son, it was like they were taking the piss out of previous Jason Statham movies. Can't even remember what other movies i went and saw with him this year.

Just remembered, i saw "Fall Guy" which was obviously low budget, but was OK for easy watching. Being set in Sydney made it interesting too.

Last night i watched "the day of the Jackal " 1973 movie. Was good.

Pirating and then streaming changed the game. Movies have gotten more and more expensive and studios aren't willing to take the risks on new IPs. Everything has to be an adaptation, remake, reboot or sequel.

Miramax used to make the best movies that were never targeted to huge audiences, those sort of films don't exist anymore.

Instead of movies being made that 20% of the public will love, they make movies that 50$ of the public will tolerate.

I really don't watch many movies at all anymore.

You know your wife is going to make you go and see "Wicked".

I've got to say i've enjoyed some streamed series a lot more than i've liked movies.

The long format just allows better character development and more complex story lines.
My son likes his comics, and we've just watched the Penguin series.
Got to say i enjoyed watching that a lot more than any of the recent films in the DC universe. Well at least since Christian Bale was Batman.

Covid also kind of screwed theatre releases where studios had to pivot hard, so streaming more than took off to then allow for the "new normal" of essentially miniaturising them and thus scaling back a bit for the more risky options they might have otherwise greenlit.

In other news as I feel the need to vent a bit..

I regret being the middle child and only male, as it meant decades pass and the others move on, but since things needed to be done, they got done. Now that it's my turn to think about me finally, nope, let's fight about "the estate" for a year at this point whilst I've been pushing to just engage lawyers and be done with it. Might finally be getting through to them, but getting balder by the day and gone is my long flowing mullet days that I think about getting a gothic steampunk trench, so I can beard up, shave head and have a retro steampunk "literal badarse" get up for when I sledgehammer things for some joy.

Only...

It's all friggen costume related, gimmiky, le sigh. Give me a hood, embroidered vest & trench FFS. Victorian era me boy!

Having a family feud over inheritance? This stuff really brings out the worst in people.

I had a shocking experience when my grandad died, a dodgy aunty look him to a lawyer when his mind was gone and helped him sign a document he couldn't understand which cut the other siblings out, as my dad had passed away around the same time it meant I missed out on it.

The old fella has been living in Australia my whole life, I was closer to him than anybody. Even gave up GF tickets in 09 and '10 to watch the game with him at his place.

Worst thing is, it didn't even come as a surprise. His dying wish was to return to Scotland to die at home and we all knew exactly what the aunty was going to try and pull, especially since I had won him a fair lump sum payment in an asbestosis claim.

People think they want expensive special effects and action sequences - that's how you get cookie cutter movies. My favourite thing about streaming is that I can just skip all the action bullshit in movies and shows. It's braindead, there's nothing interesting about it, just tell me who wins the fight so the plot can continue.
