We also had next to no injuries last year.
Actually think that is probably one of the most important differences between the two teams. We had a good injury run and Carlton had a bad one. They also seem to be having it go worse this off season (though we arent perfect either). That little bit of extra time together has definitely helped our young guys develop cohesion together

Lions having a ripper of a preseason. Only a few little injuries but otherwise everyone is in best ever shape and fitness which allows the boys to do more match day training instead of running laps.

Must be great for Lions supporters to see a video like that after what you went through a few years ago with players wanting out. I mean I know it’s just an edited snippet, but it adds to the noise that the Lions have got a commited group of talented youngsters who all want to be there and are enjoying what they’re building together.

Gold Coast could take heart in your example.

It's a (ASADA approved) shot in the arm is what it is. You constantly hear about how they're establishing a good culture among the team and the young players are enjoying each other's company but to see it with such an inside view like that really makes it hard to not drink the kool-aid about what the 2019 season holds.

You make your own luck... The Lions would no doubt have a better balance of managing their squad versus pushing them. Carlton just seem to run players into the ground and then complain they are not fit enough.

Docherty was supposedly ready at the back end of 2018 but we held him off to make sure. Jones and McGovern were both impact injuries and not due to fitness or the workload. Kreuzer I beleive only had a minor clean out and is otherwise quite fit. Fasolo’s injury was not even football related.

Pickett is probably the only one that could be questioned, he was and most likely will always be injury prone. We knew what we were getting into when we traded for him, and he is largely a hail mary shot anyways.

Otherwise you’re clutching at straws with that statement.

The fact you had to preface your final statement with the preceding two paragraphs proves my point - "you make your own luck".

And you're just talking about the current pre-season... How many paragraphs of excuses do you have for the previous 3 years where we have basically ended every season with a very long injury list?

I gather posters like yourself like to cling on to being "unlucky" so the immediate future looks brighter (with a bit of "luck") but we are still at ground zero and 2019 is looking like another 2018. In terms of player management / fitness regime, which has been the worst in the league for a long time, Andrew Russell is obviously the right appointment but it will take a couple of years for his influence to filter through the club.

Have a physio friend who has been working at the AIS, taking a few teams to the comm games and will be working at the next Olympics. She argues that even impact injuries and "luck" are a sign that you haven't been training properly. That if you had better strength in one spot (or not overloaded in another) then you would have been less likely to suffer the injury. I gather its not an exact science and seems to be a few phd's happening in that exact space but there is definitely something to the "making your own luck" in the injury space

Seems like every other day their is a report on a Carlton player. Been absolutely shocking for them thus far. They probably need most things going right to improve significantly. I mean they can still have a positive season.

I really feel like lions are building somethings special. Kids seem keen, mature players wanting to play for them. The place was horrible but to their credit they have done very well to this point of the rebuild

It’s a big plus Bugg pulling out when he did given we can still sign a couple of players.

We’re not lacking in inside mids or high half-forwards which is where he’d be playing, so hopefully we can set our sights on signing a small forward, which is what we really need after Pickett and Fasolo’s injuries.

Tom Bugg - another SOS failure.
Carlton would have to have close to the worst rookie list success rate with their current regime.
Clearly he saw all the talent on show at Carlton and realised he was wasting his time at this AFL thing, and was making plenty of dollars and had more passion for his emerging business.

It happens.

Reasonable point actually.

With Stocker and Setterfield tracking ahead of schedule, Walsh likely to play a full season, Gibbons to be signed and played Round 1, Dow and O’Brien in their second seasons and SPS and Fisher into their third seasons, Bugg knew opportunities we’re going to be limited, and he was virtually collateral for 2019.

Allows us to re-evaluate the list and sign a player in an area of need.

Dean Cox
Aaron Sandilands
Josh Gibson
Matthew Boyd
Dale Morris
Brett Kirk
Matt Priddis
Stephen Milne
and of course, Nick Maxwell.

Plenty of opportunities to develop 200 plus game players if used wisely.

Michael Jamieson
Brett Thornton
Eddie Betts
Andrew Carrazzo
Zach Touhy
Ed Curnow
Heath Scotland

Now crawl back under your rock Fadgey-Boy !!!

True. Makes you wonder why they wasted a spot on him in the first place.
