I'm also of the opinion that Crisp is too valuable down back to move to a permanent midfield position.
Having said that I'd like to see us be a little more flexible with Crisp or Maynard when our midfield is being beaten.
They both have the capacity to turn the tide if needed. For instance if we are being beaten on the inside then Maynard should be considered from time to time. If we need more run & carry then Crisp can certainly help. But it's more about a break glass in case of emergency type thing in my opinion.

I'm hoping he rips the pre-season apart and demands a spot. Could see him usurping Mayne but by the same token there are 1/2 a dozen others (Murphy, Scharenberg, IQ, Noble, Daicos) I'd like to see given a run on the wing.

Brown also has a bit of flexibility in where he can play IMHO. Was okay in defense in his 1st season, adapted to the midfield role last year, and appears to have the traits for a forward role.
Also like to see keane break through, just has a old fashion defender look about him.

Prob the most positive news in 6 months

After all this time it’s interesting to me that the language still being used towards his injury is “a knock” and his ongoing concern is referred to as a “troublesome knee”.

No mention of what the actual diagnosis was which could potentially go some way to explaining the delay. Yes yes I hear the “we don’t need an explanation” already I’m not saying it in the context of it changing things, but rather an effort to control the narrative.

Reports are that Treloar has his burst back, while JDG and Elliott both are spending significant time in the middle, both very quick off the mark. Sier is no slouch either. I don’t think we need to sacrifice Crisps spot in a solid defensive unit to gain pace in the guts under the circumstances.

Hmm Treloar, DeGoey, Sier and Elliott rotating in though the middle at CBA's - that does pique my interest a little...

I have to ask, is anyone else concerned about all this talk of Elliot and DeGoey going through the midfield more?

We as a club have invested so much money and draft picks into our midfield group, yet we are still having to move our two best forwards there to improve that area?

In terms of most peoples ideal best 22: Treloar, Beams, Sier cost us 5 first and second round picks, Adams was a straight swap for Shaw so what we lost whatever the opportunity cost on Shaw at the time was, while Aish who has left costs us 2 second round picks. This is even before you factor the money they are all on, coupled with Grundy, Sidey and Pendles.

Meanwhile our forward and defensive lines, have often been made up of trade in's (often on the cheap ala Rough, Howe, Crisp) or rookie selections such as Cox and Mihocek. Only Moore, Stephenson and JDG have cost us first round selections while WHE cost us a second round pick in his trade with the Giants.

Now don't get me wrong, I am a big fan of all of these players, however I just find it concerning that we have invested so heavily into the midfield group, yet De Goey and Elliot are still having to be looked at as options to help our midfield, which in the last game of the last 2 seasons have let us down?

For what its worth I think both Billy and JDG will only ever be pinch hitters in the midfield (a bit like Breust does at Hawthorn or Stevie J used to do for the Cats). Trialling them there is just to check the balance and JDG has often played minutes there in the past anyway. Great to have the options I say.

I agree that in terms of rotations, and having flexibility or pinch hitting at time that I'm all for it. My concerns are (and maybe it's me reading to much into reports and comments from journo's and the club), is that they become required to spend significant moment through the middle.

Would just feel like we are robbing Peter to pay Paul, when we've already paid Paul a kings ransom.

3 of the AFL's better Coaches (Sheedy, Malthouse, Roos) all said throughout their careeers that "you need at a minimum 12 players in a game that, can if needed, go through the midfield"

Pies midfield seems to go up a gear at times when DeGoey drifts through so i'm all for that.

JDG moves through midfield contests the same way he moves in the forward line: at pace and with intent. You don't want him there all day, but he's a handy circuit breaker when our mids get their feet stuck in clay.

The beauty of it is that if a Treloar has to go forward and have a break, we can put an Elliott or JDG in the middle, both of whom are quality or potential midfield quality.

Or (heaven forbid) a regular mid gets hurt and can't see out a game. You know you have guys familiar with the role who can then slot in as needed.

That said, I don't think you can draw too many conclusions from what they do at training. Especially when you have guys like Treloar on modified programs and they still need to make up the midfield numbers in match simulations. Players like JDG, Elliott, Thomas, Cal Brown, Daicos, WHE, Stevo all have demonstrated midfield capacity but will generally only get adhoc rotations based on team needs.
