I would have thought the saints the traditionally the exact opposite

;)

I can just see him up there in Brizy under the tutelage of the Lions' expert coaching panel. In 12 mths time a different person. Bulked up, hard at the ball, disciplined, speed personified, a goal-scoring wizard.
Welcome to the Gabba Marty. Come and join your cousin Ash.
Look at Pikey and how coming to a real club can turn a career around.

On second thoughts maybe not. We already have Corrie.

For those that don't know who Corrie is. You will. Soon.
When does the ******g season start?

It's a very poor decision by Rchmond and spells out what is wrong with drafting kids at 17 and pulling out of their culture and moving them to a new city with no family support (which is of greater significance that in most non-indiginous cultures). If he wasn't putting in the effort required what action did Richmond take, the easy option. If they take young kids and relocate them shouldn't they take some responsibility when it goes wrong.

A sad state of affairs. I hope for footballs sake that someone give the kid, who has talent, a lifeline.

The club can't be completely blamed, whats to say McGrath's work ethic and general attitude were poor and he simply didn't have the commitment to cut it at AFL level ?

Plently of other young players have managed to leave their home state and start up at a new club without ever having their commitment or attitude slightly questioned.

Talented maybe, but perhaps just doesn't have what it takes to cut it at the top level.

In fact it was an excellent decision by the footy club.

Word is he is more comitted to the pub and ale than he will ever be to footy.
Bout time Richmond started setting examples, maybe harsh on the kid, but now he has plenty of time to head to the pub, i bet he's stoked!

one thing wrong with the article is Danny Frawley opening his two bit country hick mouth by saying the tigers cant just give away games....

Theyve been handing them on a platter to the likes of Pettifer (who i now like to call Rhys) King (gone now) and half a dozen others..

As for Joel Bowden, he was 2nd in our hard ball gets and tackles.. He is much-maligned, unfairly too, as his main weakness is he sometimes lacks disposal skills.. Strange when he has such good skills.. perhaps its pressure that gets to him..
The whole Richmond side arent that well prepared mentally for pressure, nor for that matter are they very physically imposing.
Especially when compared to the likes of Brisbane.

Sad but unfortunately footy at the highest level is a cuthroat business and only the toughest survive. It provides people with a fantastic opportunity for fame and fortune but on the other hand, injury and poor form can also result in careers being cut very short. It's tough for anyone leaving the game prematurely from an employment point of view. Putting in years and years of sacrifice and pain and then being thrown to the wolves of the real world would be hard for anyone to cope with. This is where clubs have a big responsibilty to these people and I believe all the clubs actually do provide significant support to players for life after footy

Well at least some Tige fans are being realistic. McGrath has been chosen to provide an example of what is acceptable and what is not.

There are lots of reports of a baf culture at Tiger land whether it be drinking (people still wonder why Hogg got the bullet) or just poor spirt of the field, go ask Hilton how many tiges players and officials visited him in hospital.

Danny Frawley has no idea, this was standard practice at the Aints but Miller will not tolerate it. Danny is fast becoming a puppet and will be out at the end of next year.

Quite probably a fair analysis.

As it is, Spud's role is way past being that of a puppet and has been reduced right back to basically putting out the witches hats at training.

When Spud first came on board, he made a fair fist of trying to instill some discipline (with the much publicised suspension to Ottens as well as others to Bourke and Birdman Evans). It seems, however, that he didn't have the minerals to stamp it right out, being perhaps too desperate to hold on to his own position.

Now at least Miller owes no favours and hasn't been afraid to stamp on a few toes, both within and outside of the club.

As a supporter on the outside, this is really pleasing to see. About time someone got in and rattled the cage.

Ultimately, it is about instilling a winning culture and that can only come from someone who knows what that culture is. Spud never had it at St. Kilda or even Collingwood. Malthouse has it; Matthews has it; Pagan has it and so does Miller.

In most other clubs, the Coach is the Football Department head honcho. Not anymore at Richmond! That now most certainly belongs to Miller. While the broom is still being put through the club, this can only be a good thing.

That may all be fair enough, but on this particular issue:

1. The press release doesn't exactly give out decent information - it doesn't really say why he's gone
2. Even if the sacking is justified, I agree with the previous poster that the timing is unnecessarily harmful to the kid's footy career, such as it is.

I fear it won't be long before I see young McGrath at a WAFL game, bloated and drinking cans. Just like Ashley Blurton sadly. And I still think football clubs and the football industry has a responsibility to these kids and can't just wash their hands of them with the "they weren't up to it - their attitude wasn't good enough" line.

Call me an old softy if you like....
