Can Heppell play a small defender role?
No. Nor can he play a medium defender role, really.
If he wasn't captain I doubt Essendon would have even offered him a 1 year deal.

People look into interviews and shit way too much, I think the situation is pretty straight forward -

Dunks is happy to stay, we want to keep him. We’re only offering a certain amount (as we should) and he’s getting offered more elsewhere.

Currently everyone’s playing their cards close to their chest, I don’t think Power will give in to budging too much on what we have outlined for Dunks, so it’ll come down to whether he wants to uproot his life for the extra coin or not. He very well might decide to take what’s on offer here, he might not.

It’s not about whether he is happy or not or anyone being right or wrong currently it’ll just come down to the decision, he probably hasn’t even made yet 😂

I'm going to get flamed for this, but I avoid watching Essendon at all costs. Can Heppell play a small defender role?

Yes, yes you are and no, no he can't.

He's just not very good.... He's just average.... Completely what we don't need.

FTFY

Bomberos (and North) have captains so cooked even a starving dog would turn their nose up.
I understand North playing Ziebell in their current predicament, but if he is even on their list next year, their new coach will be wasting a spot.
As for Heppell, if GCS interest is true, you'd hope it's for an off-field role.

Relevant targets seem few and far in between. If we are relying on Jones only we're in trouble
What do you mean by few and far between?
Not everything is played out in the media, and even some media speculation is just that.
There will be targets out there not mentioned yet, just like any and every other year,

It’s just up to our recruiting staff to target the right targets.

Surely Crows are interested in Dunks too their midfield is non-existent, ideally we get a bit of a bidding war from Port/Crows - I know that’s not really how it works in trade terms but even a bidding war driving his contract up means we can ask for more in a trade, and can at least try to play them off each other a little bit.
Eithers first (currently picks 4 & 7) would be great for us, even with something going back the other way.

I’m actually getting pretty excited about this trade period - let me start this by saying I still want Dunks to stay, I’m a fan and I like what he brings to the midfield and I think if after next year we do have a coaching change he can be better utilised too, he’ll be at his best at 26ish and be a genuine beast. He’s had a really strong year would be a big loss. But let’s just say he leaves - which is a pretty strong possibility at this stage.

Dunks, JJ, Hunter is a lot of money off the books/saved - that’s nothing to sneeze at. Probably Schache, Cordy, Martin & Wallis too who will all be on varying degrees of the avg wage (ie higher than draftees) I’d like to keep Schache but I’d suggest he leaves.

From there we bring in Lobb on less than JJ, Jones on **** all - these two cost us roughly a 2nd rounder only for both you’d think. Massive improvement to our side. I’d love to find another good defender or small forward to trade in, don’t really know who but happy to just put together a war chest for next year for McKay etc - we will have plenty of money.

Gives us a great hand to go into the draft with two top 10 picks - a real chance to refresh the list which is needed I think, things are a bit stale.

I think we’ve blown some chances over the past few years absolutely but we’re still just getting started - those changes leaves us better next year and extremely well placed for the future. Keath, Jones, Darcy (Buku, Gardner back up) Lobb, Naughty, Jamarra (Bruce back up) that spine is competing, so long as Bevo doesn’t hamper us with bullshit from preseason and every single week, that side is absolutely competing for top 4.

Whilst going forward we’re left with absolute top line elite talent Darcy, Jamarra, Naughty, Baz & 2 top 10 picks (and the next tier down of young talent - Ed, Cody, West, Garcia, Bedendo etc) to go with Bont, Macrae, English etc now as the older experience (which EVERY flag side has)

Realistically if we’re well ran/managed (big if tbh) we should be competing at least in finals, probably deep in finals, every year from now until Bont/Macrae etc finish up/slow down, in 6 or so years.

If we could bring in Buss & maybe a big bodied, burst mid/fwd with the two top 10 picks we’d have a bloody brilliant foundation going forward.

It’s the perfect opportunity for a great little refresh of a list whilst still competing (completely aided by what usually takes 2 years of a bad rebuild, in picks 1 & 2 Jamarra & Darcy) cut some deadwood, some older players who are overpaid and not contributing, and double down on our young talent whilst bringing in some much needed best 22 experience too.

Crows are all over Rankine so I doubt they can do both.

Add to that paying overs in points two years in a row for JUH and Darcy.

Please explain. I thought we got them for a points discount. Two absolute blue chip, premium KPF talent for a discount. Every other club is envious that we landed them. But because they haven't given us immediate returns or given us a flag in their first year, then we must have overpaid?

If those reports are true then Crows will be giving up at least their first and something else decent as well.

Crows are interesting, I've seen people in the media criticise their list build but their KPP stocks look OK to me and despite the fact they don't have a lot of "names" in the midfield the games I've watched they've done pretty well in contested ball and clearance (although the numbers may not back me up on that).

They need polish and x-factor, so Rankine makes sense to me. If Rachele builds on the promise he showed earlier this year, they get Rankine, and find some good ball users off half back (Laird has moved to midfield so they have a gap there), then all of a sudden they look OK. I'd much rather have their list than Port's tbh.

Yeah can only imagine we'll live to regret getting access to two top 2 talents at a discount in successive years where we made finals. JUH a number 1 pick for the price of pick 3, and Darcy a number 2 pick for the price of pick 4.

And not to mention that fact that without these two being tied to the club we would’ve not had access to two top 2 picks considering where we finished on the ladder.

They were absolute steals.

JUH was an absolute gift. We got him in the one year that the list spot rule for matching picks was suspended.

Yep, like the Saints this year can't match on academy prospect Cam Mackenzie unless he is bid on from pick 40 onwards (he'll be long gone by then).
