I think if Dunkley goes whatever we’re likely to get back won’t be equal value.

After a quick look I think Dunkley, Cripps and Coniglio are the only three players in the comp averaging over 25, 0.8 goals, 5 clearances and 4 tackles. I know stats like that should be taken with a grain of salt, but the point is his absence will leave a big, hard to fill, hole.
It is amazing to me that we continue to want to turf solid contributors out for unspecified assets. Every game this year we've rolled out at least a couple of players that aren't AFL standard (at least at present) - and we want to further decimate our depth???

As I have mentioned many times before, I am certain Dunkley is out of here - but that's unquestionably a bad thing. We are running 4-5 AFL standard depth players short compared to other contenders. Every player that we get rid of adds another to that.

A KPD + another medium defender is definitely a priority but we should be pursuing AFL level mids that play their role as well to replace the Mccombs Hannans and Scotts just as much.

I have no idea who those potential players should be since I’ve really only been looking at potential defenders to target.

Losing a mid career big bodied midfielder that does the dirty work and kicks goals is an objectively bad (albeit seemingly unavoidable at this point) outcome for a side that should see itself as closer to the peak of its list build than the start.

Would definitely be willing to trade Dunkley and forego Lobb if it means we have enough assets to land a quality key defender or two

Yeah, exactly what I was thinking. Even IF the club has actually decided this, surely the circle of knowledge would be so small (Bevo, Grant, maybe Bains) that any leak would out the leaker.

Although there have been rumours Rohan Smith will go prior to today. So who is leaking?!

Yeah very good question. Something definitely seems off. Bevo has had a frustration about him all year I reckon.

Because it's true. Boyd isn't a fan and would struggle to work under him.

Is that from the horse’s mouth and recent? I understand the last year of his playing career wasn’t great for him but he was just trying hang on as long as possible. Surely like most doing that, he sees it now.

Ben Paton is a half decent small defender and is out of contract this year.

I’d love a decent small defender and Paton might be right but we need the club to want to play one first and surely we a can develop a lock down back pocket lockdown from within or at low cost.

Why isn’t he in St Kildas best 22?

Don’t know about this season, but he got a pretty bad injury last year I think. Before that he was turning into a very good small defender, I’d 100% ask the question if he were to be available*

* no idea if his injury is also holding him back from returning/had a Crozier-like drop in form & confidence due to it

We forget how good Toby McLean is/was in our midfield.

Agreed - but I am concerned he has lost a lot of pace from what I saw on the weekend. He looked quick by hand, but slow in feet - I am hoping it’s just the rust he is shaking off….

He has always been a bit one paced, but definitely best 22 when in form.

Agree on him being best 22 based upon previous form, he just looked really slow (based on very limited viewing to be fair) on the weekend. Looking for high contact at every chance, possibly as he doesn’t have any burst to get away. Still looked clean with the ball skills though (ignoring one shot at goal)

I love Toby but prior to his ACLs he hadn't contributed to the midfield consistently for quite some time. 2018 was a stand out but 2019 and then 2020 were very patchy.
Through lack of opportunity more than anything else. Libba’s resurgence, Dunkley’s breakout, the introduction of Smith plus McLeans injury issues all contributed to his move forward but there’s no reason to believe he couldn’t have still contributed in the midfield to the same extent if given the chance.

I think it became clear during those seasons that he’s a midfielder first (and a pretty good one).
