Hello Eagles fans!

The embedded resources below are kept up to date by the trade board mods (as much as possible – we are human after all). Enjoy!

Keys you may like to sticky this post & move it to the start of the thread (so the sticky post doesn't rotate if a post is deleted before it), or copy it to your draft thread if you have one.

I've lost track of who is a part of the WCE team now, including rookies etc - the entire playing group? Even before the draft there were a couple of names I was unfamiliar with.
The team list at WCE site still has NN and others on it.
Anyone have the complete players list with field positions, including all the draftees, rookies, maybes, hangers-on etc?

Thanks, appreciate that! (I had deleted this request after finding a stand alone thread on the subject)

As far as we know it was a straight swap. Essentially Curtin for our F1

GWS took Gothard and Leake now rather than wait a year for wherever our F1 lands

GWS must think there is some risk that our F1 will slide as we bounce back up the ladder.

ok thanks man for the response. But any idea if Eagles would have just accepted a straight swap of F1 for Curtin? Or, probably more likely, asked for additional picks from the Crows (like our pick 14) also?

The Eagles poster on our board before the draft - sorry forget his name but was a cracking bloke - and I were discussing and I actually said at the time I didnt think the Eagles would accept the pick for Curtin and our pick 14 for F1 (which according to bookies odds is a likely top 3 pick)

Perhaps we will never know what was offered but agree GWS and Dees are right in contention mode for a flag now and wanted to stay at the pointy end of the draft where as Crows were able to take a longer term view with our young list profile. Don't know much about young Curtin besides looks like a great player but admittedly didnt seem thrilled being picked up at the time...but perhaps thats just the young blokes personality type.
Apart from the “cracking bloke” part that could well have been me. Seems like you were a bit closer to the mark than I was in the end. I’m still VERY surprised Crows didn’t take it IF it was a straight swap given what next year’s draft looks like but understand you guys wanted to stay in this draft. If the tin rattlers didn’t use their charity pick on Goad and he got to your last pick it would have been flawless.

Sumich was also 21 and had played at South Freo for 3 years before he came to West Coast

He was still very good though

Which is partly why we were good then - a lot of our guys had played a few years in s stronger WAFL comp.

Downside was those players got 150-200ish games at the top level (not many in the 250 range)

I believe the list teams would view a mature age draftee as being in a cohort with the age group but show when and how they drafted them separately

So Maric belongs in the draft year of 2023 since he was overlooked in his first eligible draft (the when) and he would be included with the 2022 age group (the what are they).

When looking a list profile, list management soon gloss over how they got on a list and more so focus on what position(s) and she group they are in
Yeah agree - like if you're Geelong and drafted mature players, would you capture your entire draft haul in previous years? Nope

I see it more as 'what year did you develop the qualities necessary for an afl club to bring you on board', rather than year of eligibility.

BOND 007 just a thanks for your insights.
You too Phil.

Also huge thanks to pantskyle for consistently being the voice of reason with the trade with North stuff. Definitely kept a lot of melts in the pot.

BOND 007 WCE_phil

There were a number of guys left out on selection that were talked up over the last few weeks. Your thoughts on why the following guys might've missed out on getting selected?

Nathan Philactides
Will Patton
Riley Weatherill
Koen Sanchez
Kade De La Rue

Can't respond on behalf of WCE_phil - but realistically all players outside of the top dozen have issues/flaws that call into question their suitability.
The difference between a player at 45 in this draft & 65 is marginal and one is selected due to a feel/instinct and one isnt. It could easily go the other way.

Then clubs are more cognisant nowdays on leaving a spot or 2 open to see what pops up down the track.

Could argue that some of the above names could be better players than some selected. If they are never selected we will never know, but one or 2 may get onto a list in the future and we shall see.

There too much noise about this now

I think NGA changes will come in the next few months

Interesting as they need NGA in the northern states, ill think we'll see bid match allowed from pick 1 imo and no discounts

Now that the draft is done & we have a full squad looking at next year the following players need a big year.

Gaff - Game has moved past him & he's getting on some I think thats it for him.
Witherden - Did enough to earn another year but hopeful others move ahead of him with a fit squad.
Rotham - Luckily for him he still had another year to run on his contract but surely it's his last chance. Needs to put it together
J.Williams - Unlucky with injury last year but showed enough. Depth at the moment.
Jamieson - Not really sure where he fits in.
L.Edwards - Has class & time but he can go missing for large periods. Needs to work on his consistency.
H.Edwards - Hopefully can get over his injuries. Will most likely be safe as we lack KPD's on the list.
Trew - Given another chance and he's just got to take it as I think its his last

Apart from that there isn't really anyone else atm that is in danger as most of them are just kids who need more time. All of these guys will be OCC at the ed of the year apart from Jamieson.

Another cleanout next year of deadwood & the rebuild is well on its way.

Yeo needs to get on and stay on the park

Whats the go with Hine-Baston? Can we get him as a cat B, or would we have prelisted him already if we wanted him ala Coe-Livin?
There was one spot and Livingstone got it - great kid, lots of up-side. Pity there wasn't another spot.
I don't expect Hine-Bastion to be sitting around for long...clubs are circling from what I've heard.
Doggies, Tigers??, Melbourne, WCE - hope WCE can keep him in the West.

AFL Draft 2023: Clubs considered protest against league’s ‘broken’ academy system

More than half of the AFL’s clubs considered a draft protest as pressure builds on the league to review its controversial academy system.

Clubs discussed not bidding on any of Gold Coast’s four academy stars in Monday night’s national draft as part of a protest against the league’s “broken” academy system.

Recruiting officials from Victorian clubs spoke about letting the Suns’ guns slide through to the late part of the draft as a way to thumb their noses at the academy concessions to northern clubs and rail against the top-40 cap on Victorian clubs.

But the plot fell over as North Melbourne made clear it would bid on powerhouse forward Jed Walter at pick three after receiving a generous concession package from the AFL in September.

Tensions about the academy system – including the four northern academies and 14 next generation academies – has reached fever pitch in recent days as clubs vented their various frustrations.

In particular, West Coast is furious it missed out on next generation academy product Lance Collard due to the cap restricting 14 clubs — outside of Queensland and New South Wales — from taking players inside the first 40 picks.

The Eagles have helped develop Collard but sat back with their hands tied as St Kilda swooped on the skilful forward at pick 28.
Essendon pinched defender Luamon Lual (Western Bulldogs academy), Collingwood took backman Tew Jiath (Hawthorn) and Geelong nabbed ruckman Mitch Edwards (Fremantle), inside the first 40 picks, making “a mockery” of the NGA system, according to one list boss.

But the four northern clubs have free reign on their local talent as Gold Coast swooped on four jets inside the first 25 picks — Walter, ruckman Ethan Read, livewire Jake Rogers and ballwinner Will Graham — leaving rebuilding West Coast in their wake.

West Coast list chief Rohan O’Brien said the AFL had to act.
“It is really frustrating when you have done a lot of work with those (NGA) players (who are drafted elsewhere),” O’Brien said.
“It is time for a real discussion around what it might look like in the future.”
Not going to try and defend the Northern academies, but if they are going to wind back the NGA concessions, then they need to make it the same rules for all 14 clubs, because it’s so open to be rorted as well.

McGrath at Essendon would be nga eligible, so to Erasmus at Freo.

Almost 50% of Australia’s current population would be eligible, according to the latest census, as one of the requirements is being born overseas, or have one parent born overseas.

Mind you, if all the fricken Victorian clubs stopped poaching Gold Coast’s draftees, they’d probably be a top 4 club at the moment, and wouldn’t have been able to match all 4 kids.

So why all the hoohaa?

Because the AFL jumped at shadows when the other Victorian clubs whinged about the Bulldogs getting JUH.
