Recieved a contract extension by hitting set targets

Sauce?

The only thing that was mentioned that I've seen was a one year extension extension back in 2016 and in *every* outlet you care to name he is listed as an FA.

If he had been given a one year contract extension with triggers for a second year then surely that would have been reported somewhere?

Then there's this:

Blair signed a one-year deal late last year to remain with the Magpies and feels like he’s playing for his career.

“At 26 I wasn’t overly keen to sign a one-year contract but I sort of feel like every season, whether I’m contracted or not, I’ve got to try and prove myself again and this year is no different,” he told RSN927.

Free agency compensation picks under fire with claims of AFL ‘rort’ to help Gary Ablett return to Geelong

  • Ricciuto responded to suggestions Geelong received the generous compensation pick to help ease Ablett’s return.
The higher than expected draft selection could be used in a trade with Gold Coast, which has so far held firm on its demand for a player in return for the dual Brownlow medallist.
AFL rules say compensation to clubs that lose free agents is decided by an expert committee and is based on the age of the player and the size of their new contract.
Compo picks have raised eyebrows in the past when Hawthorn received pick 19 for losing Lance Franklin to Sydney on a mega 10-year contract, Melbourne received pick 3 for losing James Frawley and Richmond was handed pick 26 after Ty Vickery walked to Hawthorn last year.
Ricciuto hit out at the lack of transparency surrounding free agency compensation.
“That is a disgrace if what you’re saying is correct,” he said. “If what you’re saying is the case, there needs to be an inquiry into that.”
  • The Lions will meet with the AFL in coming days to express their frustration.
“We’re really frustrated, we’re going to talk to the AFL and Greg Swann’s coming down tomorrow,” Noble said on Trade Radio.
“I mean it is secret herbs and spices (as to how they come up with compensation pick number).
“I understand that free agency is not full compensation, compared to when the new franchises came in. We get that but it still doesn’t equate.
“We don’t believe that there’s enough mechanisms or enough levels in there that I guess give you the understanding.
“I’ve never understood the fact that a team almost lucks in to a position where you finish on the ladder, and so therefore if you lose a free agent it’s then attached to where you finish on the ladder.
“Hawthorn lost the best player (Franklin) and got pick 18, Melbourne looked like it got some help because it ended up for them as good compensation.”

Noble said the Lions may propose a system that provided greater clarity.
“I’ve always thought that that pick 9-10 band is palatable for everyone, then you have end-of-first-round, second, end-of-second round, third.
“So we’re going to put that on the table and see whether or not those bandings can actually be reset or reviewed through the AFL system.
New AFL football operations manager Steven Hocking said he could understand frustration with the system, but backed the league on knowing all the facts before deciding compensation picks.
“I’m assuming (the talk) is to do with the Motlop compensation ... I think the missing piece in it all is the contract that Motlop has signed with Port Adelaide,” Hocking said.
“There’s obviously been some speculation around that. I do know one thing from the AFL’s point of view and they’re clear with all the information outside of that it’s speculation and the AFL do take that into account, and then the age of the player
“I would say in Motlop’s case he’s signed a fairly significant contract with Port Adelaide and hence, that’s where it’s landed.”

Crazy that only 6 or 7 deals have been done in 7 days.

Only a day and a half left after today and there are still around 15 players that should find a new club.

Ablett, Kennedy, Wilson, Weller, Cameron, Stringer, Schache, Balic, Murray, Lang, Hartung, Hodge, Matera, T.Campbell, A.Swallow (maybe)

Pretty standard for negotiations to be pushed out to last minute - each club will want to get the most out of the trade. No need to show your full hand too early unless you need to use the incoming pieces to get another trade done, or you're worried someone else will trump your offer (which is rare in the AFL given players "nominating" 1 club)

Port have done exactly what we were bitching about Collingwood doing this time last year. Can't win.

There is a vast difference between us in 2016 and Port in 2017.

Port just made the finals. We were languishing in 12th position. Our list full of holes, a lack of KP players, a lack of quality outside run. Their list in much better shape, not the gaping holes we have. It makes sense for Port to think short-term, trade aggressively, top up on players while they are thereabouts. It made no sense for the 12th team to do that. We need(ed) to take a long term view and build the list.

Brisbane complaining?

My mind has exited my cranium.

The AFL is an unmitigated rort from top to bottom. This is no better or worse than any of the other bits.

Yeah but better compensation for Motlop than Rockcliff who's on much more money...

Stevie Wonder can see what a rort this is.

Am I the only one who thinks that no news is good news for the pies this trade period?

Unless we get the opportunity to snag someone for unders (schache) or chase someone elite (lynch) i am happy the club isnt overpaying for more 16-25 kind of guys.

Couldn't agree more. People just want something to happen at their club to create a bit of excitement in the off season. There's not much worth chasing this year, so lets get a jet with Pick 6 and do our best with the other picks!!

Questionable characters all 3, could easily go south for them imo.

Rockliff - AFL Captain, 2 x Best and Fairest Winner, All Australian
Motlop - Kicked 26 goals or more 4 times while averaging at least 17 touches, kicked 44 goals in 2013 and 38 goals in 2016.
Watts - Kicked 38 goals in 2016, Former number 1 draft pick

vs

Chris Mayne - Has Maggi Noodle Hair

I reckon they are calculated risks that will pay off in spades.

Ports forward line is going to be a handfull.

HF: Motlop - Westhoff - Watts
F: R.Gray - Dixon - Wingard

Rockliff played all year with a bad shoulder. It was pretty amazing he played at all really. Before his injury, he was leading the comp in clearances. He'll be a great pick up for Port. Next to Ollie Wines and Powell-Pepper, they are going to bully some midfields...which is scary when you consider they have Polec and Wingard on the outside.

Dixon and Watts will make a great combination as well. Motlop was huge in the finals, and I think he is another bargain pick up from them.

Power are very well placed.

Port have to risks to go forward. Either way all they're still much better deals than Mayne.
I’m not disputing that they aren’t better deals, all good players. Just stating that they have brought in 3 players that have all been questioned for their off field behaviour.

Motlop isn't a premiership player but I agree with the point of your post

I’m not saying they aren’t good players. Just stating they have all had their problems.

Your post gives off that impression.

^Guys, I don't think we're really in a position to criticize other clubs trade/FA moves.

Now that doesnt change that I'm glad we didnt chase any of those players.

If we were into Schache then I'd be sticking it to the Lions - Schache + 43 for 38 and 56 (or a player).

Basically we undo the pick swap from last year's trade period for Schache this year - I've be satisfied with that, if we thought Schache was worth having.

p.s. I'm still not entirely sold on that final point, not in relation to the trade picks specifically but having him on the list period.
