The groupthink on the Bolton thread on MB is quite amusing, with picks 9 & 16 being tossed around as if they're a fair and reasonable exchange.

Hartley has made it clear that only something extraordinary would convince us to part ways.

Moreover, their CEO has stated that their focus is on the present, not on future prospects by recruiting young talent.

Without a doubt, picks 9 & 10 are the bare minimum required to finalize the deal, and it wouldn't be surprising if we aim for pick 27 as well.

These picks will only increase in value in proportion to the salary cap relief that we make available.

The same can be said in the Rioli negotiations, Dimma has already stated that he's not interested in draft picks, the GCS's have targeted Richmond royalty and they will have to pay. 6 & 20 is the bare minimum, add salary cap relief and 12 comes into the equation.
Deal for Bolton will be 9 & 16 max...we should take that and run, as we also gain back a huge chunk of our cap (like you mentioned).

anyone got access? about bolton

Shai Bolton’s mooted trade from Richmond to Fremantle may yet have to jump a significant hurdle with an early trade period stand-off likely over which two of Fremantle’s three first-round draft picks Richmond would get for the wantaway forward.
Fremantle has picks 9, 10 and 16 at this year’s national draft.

The Dockers might even have been prepared to offer all of those picks for Bolton and teammate Liam Baker — who has since nominated West Coast as his club of choice immediately following the appointment of Andrew McQualter as the senior coach on Monday.

While formal trade discussions are yet to kick off the early indications are that Fremantle will put one of their top-10 picks on the table for Bolton along with pick 16.

And Richmond’s response to that — initially at least — is likely to be that they want the two top 10 picks.

Normally two first round-picks — even 10 and 16 — would be plenty for a small forward like Bolton — who kicked 34 goals in 2024.

But Bolton has four years of a lucrative contract still to run and Richmond have publicly declared they are happy to keep him at the club if they don’t get the deal they want.

And normally a club like Fremantle, which needs an X-factor forward to fill the gap left by an ageing Michael Walters — would eventually offer up the picks that get the deal done even if it means paying significant overs.

But holding one top-10 pick in the bank may prove significant for them because it would put the Dockers in the frame to draft Peel Thunder talent and WA 18s captain Bo Allan.

Allan is the standout local in WA this year.

While Hamish Davis has climbed the draft pecking order after making a significant impact for Claremont’s seniors in WAFL finals, Allan is the only WA player thought to be in top 30 reckoning at the National Draft.

Bo Allan is considered the standout in WA’s draft pool this year.
Allan will hold an added attraction for the Dockers because he has played at Fremantle’s WAFL alignment club Peel Thunder and two weeks ago was a member of their WAFL senior premiership team.

At 191cm and 84kg he not only already has the big body that would see him close to being ready to play AFL football in 2025, but he also has a good understanding of the Fremantle playing style after 11 senior appearances for Peel this year.

He split his time between the Peel seniors and state 18s, playing only twice in the Colts team. He played in two of Peel’s finals — missing the Qualifying final and First semi final with a quad strain.

The appointment of McQualter as West Coast coach will make the Bolton negotiation a delicate one for the Dockers.

The haste with which Baker’s trade request and indications that Jack Graham would seek to join the Eagles followed the announcement on Monday pointed to McQualter’s strong relationship with Richmond players.

West Coast’s list manager Matt Clark also worked at the Tigers.

Neither McQualter nor CEO Don Pyke this week ruled out making a play for Bolton.

“That is all part of the mix now. I haven’t caught up with our list manager with regards to how we are sitting around the two in Liam and Jack,” Pyke told SEN.

“We will weigh up what that looks like in terms of in terms of our draft capital and how that plays. It is probably too early to say because there is a lot of water to go under the bridge before we finalise deals.”

The Eagles hold pick three in the draft and pick 23 — with the likelihood also of claiming pick 13 after Tom Barrass is traded to Hawthorn.

It has been widely assumed that pick 13 would be the pick in the Baker trade but if pick 23 came into play the Eagles could theoretically look at splitting their pick three into two first round picks to have a crack at Bolton.

Pyke said the club’s trade and draft strategy was heavily contingent in still holding enough draft capital to bring in young talent, but he also spoke of getting “the best of both worlds”.

“We have been really consistent on this. We want to go into the draft with a good enough hand to bring in young talent because we understand where we are, we need to continue to add young talent,” he said.

“If opportunities present with free agency and trade we want to do them but we want to get the balance right where we are not giving away the farm for people and we are making sure that we have still got enough picks.”

“If we had opportunity to bring in guys in that 23-to-27 year bracket where we don’t have a lot of depth in those areas then we will look to do it but we have got to weigh up the currency we have got and how we play it to get the best of both worlds.”

We will get 9 and 10.
We don't have salary cap issues and should use the space we have to leverage the best deals where possible.

9 & 16 is not an 'extraordinary' deal.

We're going to have a massive amount of salary cap available, Bolton, Rioli, Baker and Graham off the books, plus the contingencies if Dusty, Grimes and Pickett had have stayed on. That salary cap saving has to be spent somewhere and where better than to increase the value of the picks being traded for those leaving?

Rioli - 6 and 20
Baker - 13
Bolton - 9 and 10 (or he stays)
Graham - will be what will be, hopefully our recent counter-offer means his contract has been bumped up a bit and we get band 3.

13 is a great result for Baker if goes as reported. Other 2 GC/Freo simply have to pay up if they want them. They are contracted stars, you don't get to haggle. Would have thought Freo would be more interested in securing a piece to take them into flag contention than obsessing over picks. Interesting that WC haven't ruled out Bolton either which would bring 3 into play, although I'm not sure it makes much sense for their list composition.

We'd be more than happy to pay some salary to make Rioli/Bolton happen too I'd imagine, we'll be struggling to pay the minimum for a couple of years.

Serious haul if all that comes through, before we even get to pick swaps with our later stockpile. Generally I'd be an advocate for splitting it over two drafts but with the strength of this one in the top 30 and the extent the top end of next years is shaping up to be compromised with FS/Academy guys, happy to go all in on this draft and get as many playing as possible next year.

Big fan of the Judson Clarke to hbf news too. Picking up a Stone/Konstanty for cheap seems a low-risk way to get some more guys in as well who might just need a chance.

9 & 16 is the deal when you are on the other side of Geelong and lube has not been provided.

have not been there but do not want to think about it, Ottens was bad enough

Former Pick 15
Bunch of hamstring injuries and a back issue
plenty of talent & speed
Plenty of picks from 2020 haven’t worked out. Draft year was comprised.

He played with the Oakleigh Chargers in their GF year with Matt Rowell and Noah Anderson in 2019. Averaged 11 touches and a goal.

Watching vision of him, he plays a similar role as Cumberland. Not sure if he is any better though.

What ********ing Western Australian wrote that biased garbage?

Interesting, so we want 9 & 10 but Freo only want to give us 9 & 16 because they want to get Bo Allan with pick 10.

West Coast would like Bolton but still want to draft young players in so that appears pick 3 won't be offered for Bolton, if they are wanting to add Bolton they will split pick 3

It is clear we aren't happy with 9 & 16, so for Fremantle to get Bolton they need to get creative.

Pick 13 sentence for Baker confused me as they mentioned pick 23, how does pick 23 come into play if they are offering 13 for Baker? Are they saying if they split pick 3, we would get one of those split picks 13 & 23 for Bolton & Baker? Leaving West Coast with the other pick that was part of the pick 3 split?

So basically, that whole article has been our arguments on the trade board in Bigfooty the past fortnight lol

Big chance that we add 18 to the mix and a play for 12 from GCS shouldn't be ruled out either
Why would we not pay his entire salary and buy another pick? We have so much cap space, same with Freo. I don't have any mail on this but it would be stupid to not pay for three years of their salaries to grab every pick we can right now.

Sick of seeing this garbage, reductive sentiment in the media. Bolton is not just a small forward, he's a bonafide game-breaking mid who hasn't even come close to his peak yet (IMO). Very few can do what he can.

If it's not 9 & 10 at minimum, keep him.

always a few folk on here that want to take unders

Agreed, this is a bloke who takes a finals side the next step. Genuine cream for an established side that walks in and takes them from pretender to contender. worth a kings ransom or gagf

Or just shop him to West Coast
That being a prospect alone should keep Freo honest especially with the Mini and Clarke factor at West Coast knowing all to well the value Bolton holds

You talking about Freo bro?

Rioli for pick 6 - win (would be even better if we can somehow get a 2nd rounder on top)
Baker pick 13 - win (never expected this pick and still don't believe it)
Bolton pick 9 & 16 - Loss, (I hate it, but I even hate 9 & 10).
Graham - compo - win (don't care if it's a 3rd rounder TBH).

All our late picks don't even come into the conversation, maybe we do lose a pick in the Baker deal (29?) I hope we can maximise those late picks though, happy for future picks if we already have so many picks in the top 30.

This - not accurate. As many late picks we can accumulate does come into the conversation... because all the points will help us either buy Brisbane's F1, move up the order or trade into next year.

I'm surprised that 13 has somehow been touted as the likely cost of getting Baker, I would have thought that 23 and their F2 would be the deal.

It makes sense for WCE to split 3, they split pick 2 a couple of years ago for 8 & 12, so there's precedent for it to happen. I assume they would do it even without Bolton being in the mix.

Let's just assume for argument's sake that pick 13 is on the table for Baker, WCE draft hand would then be.....

3-23 & Baker

If we offered Baker and pick 10 for pick 3, leaving 13 alone, then their draft hand would be......

10-13-23 & Baker

Instead of 10 & Baker we could do 9, which, funnily enough, mimics what they did 2 years ago with splitting pick 2 for 8 & 12, this year they'd split 3 for 9 & 13
